I haven't tried that, but I'll offer my thoughts on it. You're better off with a variety of materials when you compost, but if all you have is coffee grounds and newspapers, you'll have a mix of browns and greens, so they'll compost. One potential drawback is that that could end up repelling water. I think that both newspapers and coffee grounds can repel water under certain circumstances, but if the layers are that thin, you may not run into it. The newspaper would probably decompose faster if you shred it first. It'll still decompose unshredded, but I think one reason people use a layer of newspapers when they lasagna garden is to lay down a weed supressing layer that will decompose slowly. You may also need to experiment with the thickness of the layers to get the right C:N ratio. You might want to try it on a small area first, and expand if it works well. Just my 2c. Dee makes a good point about being lenient in the perennial beds. Leniency does not make a successful veggie bed. I've been thinking about how I have a different attitude with my veggie garden. I'm more vigilant, diligent. If I have a perennial flower that doesn't bloom one year, I'm "Oh well. There's always next year." If I have a tomato plant that doesn't produce fruit, I'm pi****. I'm cursing. I take it really personally. Whereas the flowers are there for my enjoyment, I eat my veggies. Which is a more personal level of enjoyment. A more intimate level of interaction. With perennials, I feel like I can stick them in the ground and ignore them. It's survival of the fittest. Eventually you get rewarded with flowers. Not so with veggies - you need to spend the time. Weed. Eliminate bugs. Stake plants. Fertilize. Water. Harvest. Or else you are setting yourself up for huge disappointment. There is no "next year". Since veggies are annuals. But in the end, nothing tastes better!

The plastic tubs (4) which I use for indoor vermicomposting are located in an attached garage which is ambient heated. The garage never gets colder than 40F or warmer than about 50F in the winter months. In order to maintain sufficient heat I set these bins on top of a 6ft long heating pad with a thick carpet underneath. The heater is operated on a toggle timer which is adjustable in 15 minute increments. Controlling the heat can be rather tricky, so I'm careful to check the media temperature when feeding my worms. I use 40F to 50F water to blend my foods before adding to the bins, and frequently use one more quarts of additional water for hydration purposes. The feeding process is typically two blenders full per bin and each bin is fed about twice weekly. This pretty much conforms to PererKs's formula and it works well for me. There is one serious draw back to using a heater beneath the plastic worm bins. I must turn the bottom layer about once a week or it will bake. I usually do this when trench feeding and make sure there is adequate water to hydrate this material since it does get fairly warm. If this layer is not turned or hydrated it will bake into a hard crust. I once left the heat mat on for nearly three weeks while out of town and baked the entire contents of each bin which I mentioned in another thread. I had one large cake with temperatures exceeding 100F. Instead of completely starting over I flooded each bin with water and after awhile I noticed worms while breaking up the bricks. Some were adults, but the rest were newly hatched. When it comes to vermiculture mistakes, I have made more than my fare share, but vermiculturing with red wigglers has been more than forgiving.

There was no starry-eyed, irrational leap of faith on my part in to my marriage as we had been dating five years before we even got engaged and we had discussed the merging of financial accounts and agreed on one bank account, one 401k, one life insurance policy before we took the plunge so it wasn't as if I was all of a sudden making him nervous about finances. As a matter of fact, he was the one who wanted all of these merged accounts. He is also living with a manageable yet life-threatening disease which he claims will kill him before we even reach retirement age. I'm not being pushy or sneaky about ANY of it. I've had several 401k plans but since I've changed professions twice, went back to school (undergrad), took on a new career that doesn't offer retirement or life insurance, I have nothing other than what I bring home bi-monthly which goes directly to utilities, food, mortgage, and upkeep of our home. I completely agree that what was his when we got married at that point was his, however, from last May until now, I do believe I have a right to. I asked my husband to spell out on the beneficiary designation a percentage to be left to SS and he refused. I believe he did that because he knows that there are other stocks and bonds and life insurance policies out there that he has left in either SS's name or his mother's name, and I don't have any intention of questioning him further about those since he wasn't honest about the retirement in the first place. As for my daughter, my parents and my aunt will take care of her financially if I would die sooner than later. I had cashed in my 401ks to return to school and to survive while I went back to school. The house that my husband and I bought, we bought together with a down payment that I had saved for years and I'm not about to spell out the closing costs for that here but if you've bought a house lately, then you know it wasn't inexpensive. DH's parents are controlling and manipulative. I have never done a single thing to either of them and I've put up with their childish behavior since we've begun dating. They actually used to tell my husband when he could visit me, when he was allowed to call me, when he could take my calls, or when to ask me to go to their house to visit or to have dinner (which wasn't often because I wasn't "family"). Anyhow, I will be seeing a lawyer next week about all of this. I had made the call earlier today so thank you to everyone for their input and advice.
