Sago pup roots

Once a sago pup is potted, how long should it take to develop roots? I potted three pups about 6-8 weeks ago and I finally pulled one up to see if there were any roots forming and it was as bare as the day I planted it.

Also, I heard of two different watering theories; one is to water whenever the soil is dry and the other is not to water at all until roots form. If the latter is the case, how do you know when roots have formed? Thanks

Hi... The formation of roots on Cycas Revoluta pups can be very sporadic. 12 months ago I removed 15 pups from my mature plant and 3 of them developed roots in 3/4 months. Most of the rest have been rooting at differing length of times and 2 still have not yet got any roots. You will know when roots have formed as the grow quickly and you will see them appearing at the holes in the bottom of the pot. Water them only occasionaly as the pups will quickly rot if kept too moist. After removing the pups from the parent plant it is wise to dust the wound with a fungicide and leave for 2/3 weeks before planting into pots. Hope this helps! Regards Allan

Hi Dave; Thanks for answnering my question. No, These pups were not in the sun at all. As far as the roots go, I just pulled a few out of the bag and those had no roots at all. They feel hard and not rotted. I just keept taking the pups off my other large Sagos that I had to leave behind but as I stated, I made a small area in my old yard and they all seemed to do quite well, fronds and all. I was just wondering about the roots and if I did plant them, will a new set of roots form. You sound like your quite knowlegeable about Sagos. I'll go out and dump the bag out and see if any on the bottom have rotted, I'll trash the ones that I know are mushy. If you think the others will form roots, I'd be happy as a clam! You can just put them in the soil. Cover about half of the pup in soil exposing some "trunk" and leaving the growing bud completely exposed. It will take some time to root, but once it makes it's first "flush" of fronds you'll know that they have started to establish themselves. Not sure how long you should let them harden off, but I would guess that a day or 2 should be enough. Good luck! -Alex

The best way to separate them is to cut off the fronds and try and save as many roots as possible. Let them dry out for a day (don't put it in too much sun though as it is drying out) so the cuts can heal and after that, plant it in good soil. This time of the year it will start to end it's growth for the season and I definitely don't recommend separating them with winter so close so if you can wait out until spring, that would be good. It looks like you won't be able to separate the pups without getting rid of a lot of the roots. It will recover fine with the roots cut off if the fronds cut off, but it will need some nice weather to get it going again. Good luck! -Alex

I just seperated 2 pups from my sacco one I think rooted cause it had roots on it, the other one didn't have roots, i put it in water for about a week and just put root grown on it and planted it, will that work
