Is a Sabal Minor the Same as a Sabal Palmetto?

Is a Sabal Minor the Same as a Sabal Palmetto? i have the seeds from a sabal palmetto and they look the same as a sabal minor...Is a Sabal Palmetto a grown up Sabal Minor?

No. Sabal minor is a dwarf palm that does not produce a trunk. Sabal Palmetto does grow a trunk.

Sabal minors do grow a trunk it's just underground.

I'm with you guys mid to upper 60s this weekend!and maybe some thunderstorms sounding pretty spring like to me,its hard to leave the house mornings and afternoons I just want to stay and check the palms out,I'll probably pay the price for planting them so early and maybe see a few not make it but I'll just replace them with bigger ones! but some of them look like they are still growing even if they have only been in a week!Its so nice to finally get this project going!This weekend I will get pictures of all the palms with a size reference so I can keep track of their progress thru the year next(in about 3weeks )are the bananas they are kind of the big fireworks for the garden as they are the fastest and tallest more(and better) pics coming soon

I bought a small sabal minor (is that the same thing as a sabal palmetto?) that has been in the ground outdoors here for three winters now. It is in a sheltered area near the house wall on the south side. I don't protect it much, just a little bark mulch on the bed like all my other plants, and a spray of Wiltpruf in the fall and maybe once in the winter if the weather cooperates. I get some pretty severe leaf burn when the weather is nasty, but I cut them off and it grows new ones. Of course, it hasn't increased in size much. I think more winter protection and more sun would help (it gets shaded a lot in the summer once the bananas get all).

Hi Patricia, You can have as many seeds as you would like, we probably have thousands here. Just tell me the number you want. I looked at your trade list and although I love flowers I don't think any of the flowering seeds you have will grow here, but I would be interested in your Homestead tomato seeds if you have them to spare. They are a winter crop here so now is their planting time. I may be able to send you some plumeria seeds as well, as long as you don't want named varieties - I have a dark pink and white/yellow center. I will check in the morning,to see what is still on the trees.

An after winter update on the above sabal palmettos. So sad to report that the hurricane cut palmetto didn't make it according to the guy who planted it. I had high hopes since this was such a mild winter even with two, short mid-teen cold snaps. It was not killed by the winter, rather than inappropriate, over protection by the new owner. Apparently she wrapped it in plastic with xmas lights right on the fronds, so it got cooked! So sad. If she had just ignored it like last winter, it would've done fine and likely added more fronds this summer. My friend said she is clueless with semi tropicals and doesn't listen to advice. The small palmetto at the mini golf course looks great. I really think more 10 and 15 gallon potted palmettos need to be tried here. It's the best option for marginal areas according to Gary's Nursery in New Bern, NC. It's a shame they've not been available locally. Finally, the experimental palmetto seedlings that I scattered all over my garden survived exceedingly well with out any protection other than leaves that fell around them. Two or three that were most exposed and open on the west side of the front porch suffered burn. But all if them are very green at the baseses of their strap leaves and new straps/spears are emerging. I'm so disappointed about the HC palm, needless to say.

Islandbreeze is correct. However. SOME sable minor's in "habitat", IE in thier natural environment, which is coastal wetlands from extreme SE Virginia, on down through the carolina's, GA, and into FL, they CAN produce stout drunks of a few feet.

Here are a couple of photos of Sabal Minor in habitat. The second photo shows just how big they can get over a very long period of time in ideal conditions.

I see I see i did some research my self just recently and yes they are def different. There around 15 species of these. Crazy. thanks. I know this is random but i saw this website about all palm trees and it looked really cool check it out

Jason, im just curious, since you seem to mention that site / company in almost every post you post here....

Do you work for them? Or are you affiliated with them or something? are you getting something by "promoting" them? Just curious is all.

I do believe that actually promoting a "business" here in the forums is against policy. Its ok to talk up a good company you have used / purchased from sure, but not really so much ok to explicitly promote a company for commercial purposes. Just asking, and just letting you know. Cheers.

Nice Sabal minors! The Real Palm Trees site has nice choices, BUT way too pricey for me! There ARE cheaper sources for palms.

And as has been mentioned more than once their prices are not just a little silly to the high side,I think I saw a washy 4'- $105.00 rediculous!! have bought 3 footers for $22.00 including shipping!And a "banana"plant(I don't believe they mentioned what kind)4' for around a hundred!I hope they sleep well at night!

hey plantguy hey no offense taken, i don't actually work for them or even affiliated with them. But I can see where your coming from. I have bought stuff from them and just really like there service. I felt like i was appreciated. Ive bought from other sites like S&W but had to call to get order. but yeah thats off the subject. So the answer is no my friend. :)
