My Sabal Palmetto and Minors are heading out this weekend. Spring is finally here.

I put 2 of my potted windmills out yesterday, and I plan to put my 3 taylor form, 1 waggie, and probably my roebellini out this weekend. I'm hoping that since next week there is supposed to be several rainy days that will help with my palms being acclimated to brighter light. The clouds should help to block out some of the sun to prevent sunburn.

I moved about 80% of my plants to the cold frame. I hope 2 weeks of indirect light will help them get ready for the sun!!

Gill: He was telling the truth that they are hardy in Britain-under the right circumstance like being planted near the foundation in full sun. I think that your best chances for success are in doing that with the Sabal Minors as planting them elsewhere they will not get enough heat during the summer to store up enough sugar and carbohydrates to get through what will seem to them to be an extended cool/cold season compared to the SE USA. Our palm planting friends in the Pacific Northwest have similar challenges with Sabal Minor because of the cooler summer. Excellent conclusion on putting them outside in pots as it gets them more used to the local weather and they can stay outside as long as it doesn't get much below 25F even as seedlings in pots. I too am running out of space for my palms which last count was 46 in the ground in my yard (garden). I plan on giving lots of them away to friends and family this Spring. Trachyhead: This is always a rollercoaster time of the year in the South as one day it could be almost 80F and the next it could be 30F with really cold temps overnight. The palms really hate it when it is warm for sometime and WHAM, then the temperature drops like a rock as it seems to shock their system worse than with a gradual cool down over a consistant time frame. Hopefully we will have an easier and warmer March with no last minute snow storms.

It sounds like palmmandan got these and did not plant them yet?some of the information you read on these palms refers to them being understory palms that grow in partial sun and I think this is misunderstood to mean they prefer shade,but is not the case as alot of understory plants will take all the sun they can when they can get it!Some cold hardy palm info sites also suggest watching out for full sun in winter when roots may be frozen up north and this again is misunderstood to mean they need shade,not true!even the most cold hardy plants will get sunburn in 0 and sub 0 weather,I think sun is even more important when growing southern plants up north as this contributes to micro climate warmth!my 3 cents.

Sorry mate, but I agree with Andy! There is no way a sabal could produce 4 leaves in that amount of time. But a washingtonia could, easily. Also, the seedlings of Sabal species are noticably different than washingtonia. Sabal seedling strap-leaves are kind of straighter, more compact / hard / thick, and sometimes darker green in colour. I find them very easy to distinguish from washingtonias. If you take a closeup of your "sabal" seedlings and post a new pic we can say for sure. Growing sabals from seed is a long-term project as Andy said. Just check out the link to a guy in Georgia! He must be a patient man! Thanks Jim! Have you seen any of the palms in the area? How close to the Atlantic are you? I have Butia bonnetti (in pic) and Butia eriospatha. Eriospatha has done really well: much better than the bonnetti. The Sabal minor has doubled in size since last year. Not many leaves come out but each one is much bigger than the last. I've purchased palms from Gary's Nursey, Chilly Palm, Triple Oaks, Bethany Beach Gardens (I think thats the name of the nursey), and three different sellers on Ebay. The nursery in Bethany had huge Trachycarpus fortunei and Butia capitata along with Sabal minor, Rhapidophyllum hystrix, and Chamaerops humilus. it's suppsed to be sunny and 60 here tomorrow and a little warmer Sunday. I have a full weekend of yard/house jobs (outdoor house jobs) planned. it will be nice walking around the yard seeing it coming together and knowing it's all down hill form here. Finally real spring weather.

I'm with you guys mid to upper 60s this weekend!and maybe some thunderstorms sounding pretty spring like to me,its hard to leave the house mornings and afternoons I just want to stay and check the palms out,I'll probably pay the price for planting them so early and maybe see a few not make it but I'll just replace them with bigger ones! but some of them look like they are still growing even if they have only been in a week!Its so nice to finally get this project going!This weekend I will get pictures of all the palms with a size reference so I can keep track of their progress thru the year next(in about 3weeks )are the bananas they are kind of the big fireworks for the garden as they are the fastest and tallest more(and better) pics coming soon
