Getting Prescot Fond Blanc Melons to Ripen??
Comments (4)I can't say for sure but in Yuma with the soil type I have I water melons about 6-7 times during the growing season. Depending on the heat, that will go up. Those numbers are the minimum, but never once a week. However you are probably on more sand than I am (thinking of what I assume VA looks like from my desk in AZ). You need to water deeply early so that you establish deeper roots and then stress the plants for a little to really get the roots out. This is my problem with growing op types though, they just don't perform for me with the rooting structure like hyb do. Yuma...See MoreShould I harvest the persimmon before frost?
Comments (19)I usually note changes in my persimmons after they've been subjected to temperatures in the mid 20's, and I've assumed that they had frozen at those temperatures. This is supported by chemical theory which predicts a freezing point of about 28 degrees F for persimmons. The reason the freezing point is not lower despite all the sugar solutes is that the predominant molecules, glucose and fructose, are complex and heavy and so are inefficient at depressing the freezing point.(as compared to simple ionic molecules like table salt)....See Moreripening... Comments (14)I'm in Anchorage, too. I've only been here 14 years though, so I've never experienced anything earlier than the 9/15 timeframe for frosts. Kim, if you ever get a red tomato which actually tastes like a tomato and wasn't grown in a greenhouse, publish the secret! I think just getting some orange is doing pretty well. Maybe the warm weather will keep up. It was darn chilly last week and when I went out a couple of nights ago I could see my breath. Not so bad last night after an 84 degree day. I've been trying all of these years with no luck. My largest fruit is probably two inches in diameter and I planted them in containers on the roof of my garage, which is my hottest spot. Our peppers just got blossoms two days ago. Sigh. I haven't had a decent tomato since I moved here. I may just have to put up a greenhouse. Comments (4)unless it's a late-flowering cultivar, go for it. I started taking them in last week, but I donate most. I cut the whole scape if it's looking dry and the pods are splitting as well, and just cut off pods if the scape is still firm. I put them in paper lunch bags. It allows you later to just shake the bag to get the seeds free, if they are dry enough. Plus, I can write on the bag. The late ones you can actually bring in, cutting the scape, and have it flower in sugar water, then you can control the cross. There's info on how to do this. I wouldn't worry about cold weather and seeds, unlesss you are wanting to do something specific....See Moreltilton
