Speaking of winners....Is the Tess Land Run worth planting? I have heard you talk about it's size some and have read that it is a wild tomato. I think that we are going to Baker Creek soon. I have looked at their website and so many of their seeds are out of stock that I hope it is worth the trip. Anyway, I would like to see the farm and such. I noticed on their website that they still have that tomato seed.

Very nice! I've taken a new interest in hardiness in flowers and plants of all kinds for our tough growing conditions. I'm refusing to invest in plants that have to be coddled and sometimes die anyway.

My all time faves are zinnias, so the Zahara Starlight Rose looks like a winner.

Lately, I've been planting hollyhocks all over the place. I even use the young hollyhock leaves that come up in the spring for greens in my gumbo recipes.

Hi All, have only stumbled back in this forum by chance again, though thought I would add a comment; I live in Australia with a climate zone equivalent to 9 in the US, have grown the following plants in this climate; 2010 J. T. DAVIS (Grace, 1999) 2009 SKINWALKER (Roberts-N., 1997) 2007 LAVENDER BLUE BABY (Carpenter, 1996) 2006 ED BROWN (Salter, 1994) 2005 FOOLED ME (Reilly-Hein 1990) 2004 MOONLIT MASQUARADE (Salter, 1992) 2002 BILL NORRIS (Kirchhoff, D. 1993) 2001 IDA'S MAGIC (Munson, I. 1988) The soils in this area are rich volcanic red soils very deep, with wet season mostly summer & fall. All of the above plants (particularly prior to 'Rust') were exceptional performers, though now most of them have been superseded by either seedlings of my own which do well in this climate or new cultivars with more dramatic colors. I would recommend to any one who wants to take a chance on a beautiful plant to try; 2010 J. T. DAVIS (Grace, 1999) 2009 SKINWALKER (Roberts-N., 1997) as they are still in my collection & are exceptional. J. T. Davis; is a bud builder, prolific flowering, exceptional season, fantastic flower shape, & creates a great show in the garden even with rust also is very fertile both ways. Skinwalker; terrific color, mass of flowers, good rust tolerance here, long flower season, Flowers present well on bush creating a great spectacle. LAVENDER BLUE BABY (dip); since the onset of rust in my garden this one does not perform any where near as prolific as it used to be, bush is prone to rust in wet seasons (shabby appearance) color does not contrast much with foliage though was exceptional in the past. In the past I have grown several thousand registered daylilies, as well as possibly 20,000 to 40,000 seedlings. though once rust appeared here have only kept approx 30 plants. These plants in my mind here in this area, are exceptional, only wish I could see them with out rust am sure they would be amazing garden specimens? examples of ones I like are CITRIX (Stamele), MALASIAN MARKETPLACE (Salter), CAREFREE SUNSET (Stamele), COOL ELEGANCE (Nunan - Aus.), MERYL (Nunan - Aus.), (SENSE OF WONDER (Trimmer), BORN TO RUN (Stamele) & PLANET MAX (Reed) all great flower displays, reasonable rust tolerance & beautiful colors. Just my thoughts Allan.

"Fleuroselect Selects 2009 Winners Fleuroselect recently chose three cultivars, Armeria pseudarmeria ÂBallerina Red,Â Armeria pseudarmeria ÂBallerina WhiteÂ and Prunella grandiflora ÂFreelander BlueÂ as its Gold Medal Winners for 2009. ÂBallerina RedÂ and ÂBallerina White,Â which were both bred by Kieft Seeds Holland, were awarded for a few reasons. TheyÂre both able to produce an abundance of beautiful ball-shaped flower heads on short, strong stems from June to September, and they have increased compactness and uniformity in their plant and flowering. The perennials are also heat tolerant. ÂFreelander BlueÂ is compact, uniform and flowers early with its new trendy color. It tends to bloom from May to October, and it follows ÂFreelander Mixture,Â which was awarded the 2006 Fleuroselect Gold Medal for being the first annually flowering Prunella grandiflora. Susan, Cheyenne Spirit was bred by Pan AM Seed and Keift Seed breeder Ping Ren in Illinois. I assume the seed is being produced in The Netherlands. I knew it was being trialed in the AAS Trial Gardens so have been watching it for a couple of years. Last year the seed was available from a handful of online retailers, and I almost purchased it then, but (mindful of the disappointment in Terra Nova's pricey new echinaceas the last few years) I really wanted to wait and see how this variety performed in the AAS Trials. Since "Cheyenne Spirit" was trialed in 37 AAS Trial Gardens across the USA and was selected as an AAS winner, I have high hopes for it. There's no way to know, though, without trying it and seeing how it does, which is precisely what I intend to do. I feel like any plant that was trialed for multiple years in AAS Trial Gardens in the recent drought years has to be really good to emerge a winner. I think the watermelon looks very interesting. My dad's family grew Moon and Stars when he was a kid, and I still plant it about 1 year out of 3. I'd grow it more often, but the plants take up so much space and I'd rather grow smaller refrigerator-sized melons. Thus, I find this new watermelon very intriguing and likely will grow it in 2013 if seeds are available early enough, or in 2014. It looks like it would produce a nice melon that's larger than the refrigerator melons but not nearly as huge as the regular OP Moon and Stars. I already have my Grow List pretty much figured out for 2013, but I always leave a little room to try a few new things. We have a new fenced garden area with very sandy/silty soil that we used last year for the first time in about a decade. I had grown flowers and winter squash there before in and prior to 2006, but then the deer discovered the garden and that area wasn't fenced, so I stopped using it. This year I grew corn and 'Moon and Stars' watermelong there along with some Tahitian Melon winter squash and some drought-tolerant bush beans called Kebarika. That soil is so sandy that the moisture just ran right through it and I had to water and water and water those plants like crazy this past summer. After I amend that area's soil by adding a whole lot of organic matter and some chicken manure this winter, I think it will be a great place to grow watermelons and sweet potatoes, so that's likely where I'll plant both those crops this coming spring. I'd like to grow the new watermelon variety there. I find the color range of the Cheyenne Spirit echinaceas very intriguing and they'd look great with the other hot colors of plants like butterfly weed, Texas star hibiscus, and zinnias that I always grow in the veggie garden's flower border. I love hot colors in that area because those hot-colored flowers seem to attract oodles of pollinators. Dawn

In terms of flavor and productivity, Tess's Land Race is well worth growing. Whether you want to spend the necessary time required to pick hundreds of tiny tomatoes from it weekly is another issue altogether.

I love TLRC. It is a huge monster and it produces tons and tons of currant-sized tomatoes. I like it because it gives me oodles and oodles to dehydrate for winter. In fact, of the approx. 400 tomatoes dehydrating in the oven right now, about 250 of them are TLRC. I also like to eat them by the handful in the garden and tossed on salads. If you aren't going to dehydrate them though, you might find it hard to eat that many every week unless you have salads at every lunch and dinner.

If you want to grow it next year, you don't have to order seed. I am sure the packet in my seed crate has oodles and oodles of seed in it. I'll be happy to semd you some this winter when we're all exchanging seeds.

One thing I like about Tess's is that it packs a very hearty tomato flavor into those tiny little maters. It has the taste of a full-sized tomato, not the sweetness of a typical cherry type of tomato.

If I had a garden shed....or an outhouse (hee hee) that I wanted to shade, or something unsightly I wanted to screen, I'd just plant two or three TLRC plants around it and let them do their thing.

Well Barbara, I had no idea young hollyhock leaves were edible. They come up all over the place here, usually where I don't want them. I learn something new every day here. Sometimes more than one something.

I love zinnias, too. I grew them several years ago and they didn't do well so I didn't plant them again till this year. Wow, am I ever glad I did. They have been just gorgeous, still are, and have needed absolutely no care other than a little extra water after the transplant. I'm planting them every year from now on!
