Squirrels- How do you deal?

Can anyone recommend a good method in dealing with squirrels that doesn't require trapping them and then driving 20 miles to release them? (I'm told that anything less than 20 miles they can find their way back).

I'm in a semi-urban neighborhood so the trapping really doesn't make a dent especially since I have a garden and my closest neighbors don't.

So- no have-a-heart trap for me.

I've read in other posts about rat zapper for chipmonks and ground squirrels but does this work for tree squirrels?

Has anyone tried coyote urine? Short of an electric fence (too expensive) I'd like to create a perimeter barrier. They don't just nibble at vegetables, I swear they are playing with me-digging up potted plants, eating stems of flowers, and attacking the bark on my newly planted fruit trees.

I can't shoot them. Nor have any pets to chase them away- which I know works. I've read that the ultrasound repellants don't really work and that on some you can hear the beeping which is set off my any flying insect.

There's got to be a way, right?

Help. Thanks.
