can you help me i.d. what animal this might be? PICS

I found this while gardening & just wanted to see what animal might have left this. The hole to the left is pretty small, so I'm thinking (but hoping not) that it might be a snake but I'm not sure what this brown pile next to it is?(do I really want to know? LOL)

Can anyone enlighten me?

the white thing is just a fungus on the wood mulch ... they come.. they go .. they are part of ma natures realm .. ignore it.. study it... enjoy it.. some of them are pretty cool ... no need to do anything about it ...

i cant really see the hole ... mice/ voles/ chipmonk/ toad/ snake??? who knows.... does it really make a difference ... ???? crush it closed.. if it reopens.. something is around.. if not .. it is gone ...

frankly.. i dont really think snakes dig holes.. so what made the hole.. and what is now in the hole can be a whole nother thing.. just to horrify you a bit more.. lol ... 9 out of 10 times.. after you step on the hole and close it.. nothing ever comes back to re-open it ..

i used to have a dog that dug mice out of the holes they made. ditto to all of the above! and i would say wrong time of year or area for a crawdad?

Thanks all for the Replies. I forgot to mention that this is my first year gardening, so I'm a bit on the beginner side. My first gardening area just turned out too small, then the second area wasn't enough. So I made a third, fourth and a fifth. I have crops all over the place (they do look great). That is why the fence idea was ruled out, just too much ground to cover. The other day, I caught him going into my shed. I closed the door on him and tried to figure out how I was going to remove him without having to kill it. Well, next thing I know, he somehow pushed the shed doors open (it was latched) and escaped. I have a burrow in my yard, I believe that the shed and my yard is their vacation home. Their place of residence is my neighbors yard. I could always lay stone all the way around my yard, but I would need a lot. (its at least close to 1000 feet of fence. I'm going to get a trap and trasfer them to a much nicer place far away from my garden.

Thanks so much for the responses. sprout I had no idea Milorganite could double as a repellant! I've been shaving Irish Spring soap around the yard and hanging mesh bags of it from hydrangeas and climbing roses with some success. Just bught a scarecrow sprinkler and hope to set it up this weekend. Papou thanks for the information on sun. Some of mine were burning (maybe from the sudden change?) and had to be moved but I probably did take it to an extreme. Slugs have not been an issue for me so far (knock wood!) but it would be good to strive for slug free varieties when I buy more. I don't think I've seen that designation on plant tags though - is that something only specialty hosta growers would provide? jbranch that's a wonderful link - thanks so much - in my favorites already. Clearing out a crowded garden should be no different than clearing out a crowded closet. I regularly purge closets and drawers and call Purple Heart - I need the same approach in my yard. Thanks for that nudge!

Hard to say from the angle. A slightly wider shot would help. It could be moles. It looks like the soil is pushed up. If it is moles, then the gopher killer won't work. It is probably a pellet product, and moles are insectivores, specifically they eat earthworms and grubs. They won't eat the pellets with any regularity. Go back to Home Depot and ask them for a product called Tomcat brand Mole Killer. If they don't have it, I know Lowe's does. It's shaped like a worm, which makes sense, since Moles eat worms. However, I've used it a few times, and it has never failed me. As long as you follow the directions, it should get rid of the mole within a couple of days.

I have crayfish in my bottom land. An underground spring runs there and provides plenty of moisture for crayfish. Their holes are everywhere. I sometimes sit down there toward nightfall when they emerge and watch them.

what the heck kind of snakes do you guys have? here in maine, the buggers LOVE their holes.. oh, and that does look like snake puke. if you really want to compare, do a search on a search engine..
p.s.- keep in mind that's not just vomit- that's a defeated garden pest right there. The snake was just helping out. ;)

LOLOL! This hole looks to be about the size of a quarter! NOT 'dillo. If only they made a mess that small.

Looks like a slime mold, AKA dog vomit mold. By now, it has crusted over and is gone.

Doesn't have any relationship to the hole.

I am not sure what it is but I do have to say thanks to faeriesofwinter. I have spent too much time searching for pics of snake puke and cant find a one. lol
