I don't use either product, but it appears Physan 20 is used for sanitizing surfaces, sterilizing tools and work areas, preventing algae - preventing damp off.

Phyton 27 is the product intended for disease control and the two are not interchangeable.

But, almost any fungicide works better as a preventative than a curative with powdery mildew, I would not buy a product to treat one plant - you'd spend more treating an infected sedum than the cost of buying a healthy plant.
You may have results equal to a commercial fungicide with a spray of baking soda/water/few drops of dish soap, or a milk/water spray - to my thinking it would make more sense to start there.

While neglected plants at the nursery can sometimes be a good value (i.e.underwatered) when marked down, diseased or insect infested plants seldom are.

You've been sooo determined to find some heavy duty chemicals to solve your disease problems and I see you've settled on a BIG gun. So many of the disease issues that you've fretted about, minna, can be solved successfully by a wide variety of preventative measures. This one, for example.

You tried to convince us that you had tried everything, that you knew how to prevent all kinds of diseases, but just weren't having any luck. You 'almost' convinced me, at one point. However, saying that you don't know the difference between downy or powdery mildew and the confession that you purchased a plant highly infected with a disease in the first place makes me realize that heavy duty chemicals should not be in your hands. I fear for your safety.

To answer your question: if you read the label carefully, you will see that this chemical has instructions for the control of several plant diseases. The fact that your particular species is not mentioned does NOT mean, by Federal law, that you cannot use it. There is no possible way that a pesticide label can include all of the plants that a specific chemical can be used on. It will be up to you to do some testing (doesn't make much sense for one infected plant, does it?)

Review the label AGAIN carefully to make sure that sedum isn't on the list that can be damaged.

Be sure that you follow all of the warning instructions on this label. It is not to be used in a greenhouse, for example. Or anywhere near any edibles.

You'll find a 1-800 number on the label. Someone will be able to answer your question about the Sedum, I expect.

Buying some sick plants can actually be cheaper, especially when I already have some cures already on hand and don't need to purchase anything new. Or if all it takes is removing some infected leaves, or whatnot. I got a near dead hydrangea for a buck. I cut off the dead parts and the infected parts and it's coming back nicely without any signs of malady. I also bought a sweet olive the same day for half off just because it had some scales which I scraped off and haven't returned.

But regarding what you said, how can baking soda, water and dish washing soap treat fungal infections? What are the properties that would prove detrimental to fungi??

And about milk, I didn't see anything that shows that milk is proven to work. I saw that people "believe" and it "seems" to boost the plant's ability to fight the illness. But you may be right, it might work. I don't know. I don't have any experience using milk on my plants. Won't it draw insects, however? I an over abundance of ants and hornets.

The diluted amount of milk used should not draw insects, and it's an old remedy that has gotten more recent attention...link attached.

As for the baking soda, its believed pH to be a factor in bicarbonate effectiveness. Bicarbonates are also contact fungicides.

I disagree with you on diseased or infested plants being good values. I have so many expensive or rare plants along with those that have sentimental value, not only would I not pay for a plant (any price) with pests/diseases...you could not pay me to bring one home and risk any spread in my gardens.

It was Rhizo who suggested you call the company, not me. I don't know what the previous exchanges have been between the two of you, but you would do well to accept advice from her...her knowledge of diseases and insect pests is superior to many of us and if she is concerned about your chemical use, she had good reason.

Rhizo 1 is not the only one that is worried about gardeners without knowledge of plants and the wisdom of allowing some people lose with a bottle of chemicals in their hands. I see many posters that want a quick fix including you, see the weeds forum April 19, 2009 "Homemade Weedkiller" that wish to kill plants without knowing what the plants are. I do not worry about the adults but children or grandchildren plus neighbors that could be exposed to the over or misuse of various chemicals. Who knows depending on the contact with certain chemicals family trees could be wiped out.

If you actually check the ingrediants on many of the chemicals that some are so fond of the chemical names for common household products such as soda and milk are right on the label. You just need to do research to find out what the ingredients are.

I do do research. I do know exactly what plants I am treating and exactly what problem I am treating. In this one case, since I haven't encountered it before, I don't know the difference between downy and powdery mildew. I'm not an expert on mildews.

I do what is safe. Would I prefer to use a chemical, that has the POTENTIAL to be dangerous when used incorrectly, to save a plant instead of having it die? Yes. I absolutely would. Would I use it correctly? Yes. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to read a label and to follow the directions. Would I prefer to use something that has been PROVEN to work, instead of wasting my valuable time and money on things that haven't been proven? I definably would use what has been proven to work instead of things that "might" or "maybe" or "probably" would work.

And I certainly don't need you or other people telling me how to garden on my own private property and on my own plants. And it is private, I have many acres all to myself with no one else around. I've done more for this environment in my short life than many people have done over a long lifetime. Don't you dare preach to me about how to treat the environment when I've put actual blood, sweat and tears into it.

I don't play in to this whole organic nonsense when what makes the organic list is constantly being changed around due to pressure the big growers place on the politicians due to what they can afford or not.

The truth of the matter is that companies who say that they're organic are usually stretching the truth because they know that placing that one magic word on their label is going to have gullible people flocking to their product.

And those gullible people are going to feel smug, self satisfied and proud of themselves because they spent the extra money to buy that product, even though they're driving to work in their big cars, they're cutting down trees to have lawns, they encourage organic farms that have compost running into natural water ways, (which is just as dangerous as synthetic fertilizers) and all the other selfish things that they conveniently forgot about, or is made okay by their purchasing organic products as a trade off.

And they just love to shake their heads in disapproval at the people who can't afford to pay the extra money for that product with the organic label. It's disgusting that those people think that people who can't afford to buy special organic products don't care about the environment. My 6th grade science teacher who was constantly trying to get her students interested in the environment so they'll learn to care about it can't afford to buy a $5 bag of organic vegetables when the non-organic bags are just $3. Especially when she sacrificed her cost of living increase for the kids and especially when she's feeding a family of five. The wildlife rehabilitator that I've worked side by side with can't afford to shop at Roots and those other specialty organic shops. All her salary and any change goes straight to helping the animals.

And many of those great organic products have been recalled or should be recalled because they're so dangerous. Just like, you guessed it, non-organic products.

Sorry, ms. minna, but I think I'll pass reading what I can only assume is an angry rant. I'd like, instead, to stress to others who may be following this thread the need for careful review of a pesticide label, whether it comes attached to a (so called) organic product or otherwise.

Every bit of information required to use a product safely is explained on the label. I like to tell everyone that the label should be read carefully before the purchase is even made! Make sure that it's going to do the job you need it to do.

Of course, that is assuming that you know quite a bit about the pest (insect, disease, or weed), as well as the plants you are trying to protect. Most of us know that proper ID is the first step in pest management.

The next time the label should be read is before mixing and applying the product. Review the warnings carefully. Even the organic products must be used with great caution for a variety of reasons.

Review the label AGAIN to find out how to store the product after you are finished with your application. Never mix up more than you will need at that very time, but you do need to know how to store the box, jar, bottle, bag of chemical.

Finally, read that label again so that you know how to dispose of the container when it is empty.

If you find that you don't understand the wording on the label of the product you wish to use, you have several options. Call (or visit) your extension office for some help; call the toll-free number on the label; post questions here.

Pesticides (insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, etc.) CAN be used relatively safely if one takes the time and effort required to do so. But in the hands of ill-informed or careless operators (homeowners and professionals alike), they can cause serious problems to self, others, and the environment.

People aren't idiots and they don't need you to talk down to them and act superior by treating them as if they can't understand labels.

Of course you wouldn't read what I said because you don't want to hear any viewpoint that conflicts with your own. You're in your own little world and you feel really proud of yourself and important when you tell other people how to live their lives, what to use and how to use it.

Although your OP was a question from you others read these postings. Having lost many plants because of runoff from a neighbor that did not know what he was doing I want everyone to read the labels including the part that states something like "If you have questions concerning the use of this product to call."

As far as my mention of products on labels that you discount as organic materials, they may be organic materials but they are also chemicals and as such have hazards and benefits. They also appear as chemical compounds in the ingredients of many commercial products found on the shelves of most nurseries.

As far as telling people what to use or caution concerning something that should not be used I personally feel that is the purpose of these forums. When my downslope neighbor used a chemical that was a known spermicide and he had his small son helping him and I knew it, I told him what the problem was. It was up to him to decide what protection he wanted for his son. Each person can use what they want as long as they endanger no one.
