Pics of palms - post yours too

Apologies to dial up users, this will be slow to load.

Following are pictures of palms I am growing in zone 6 - in the middle of the country - Kansas. I got into palms about 3 years ago, my collection is growing, just takes time. I have many palms not pictured growing in smaller containers that did not make this photo op. Hopefully by the end of next year they will be photo worthy.

I currently have 19 different species growing and approximately 60 palms. It is a hobby that has spiraled out of control.

1st up -

wanted to get a picture of my tiki bar I built last year in here

next is a wash robusta I overwintered. it's right in the center of the picture.

and finally a picture of my pond, with tropicals and palms

Did you overwinter the Robusta in the ground? How did you protect it if you did. What was the lowest temperature it experinced in the ground. Sorry for all the questions.

Very nice, you must have fairly tall ceilings. That tallest one looks like a King. Keep it up. I've been into them a little over two years and have learned a lot. I used to think you just needed to put a palm indoors in the fall and leave it in a corner. Spider mites gave me a rude awakening.

Thanks! Stuffradio, the Pac Choi is actually Fordhook Giant Chard. :) I love the galvanized tubs as well loribee! IMO they cant be beat for the price. They should last a long, long, time. Hopefully my lettuce doesn't bolt in the heat we are expecting this week! I have misters set up to try to keep them cool!

Dang. Found this thread while researching maples in a retooling of a rose garden. The beauty is breathtaking, BUT, none of you guys/gals LABELED your trees! I can't say, 'Oooh, that's the one I want to investigate further!' Wish there was a way to go back and revise with titles. Sometimes I wonder if Garden Web forum members (of which I'm one) realize how often their remarkably useful threads come up for those of us planning and researching new and changing gardens ;~) Karen

Thanks for the advice Tropical. Very helpfull, and reasurring. My windmill palm is mostly in full sun all day. Theres a big maple tree on the street that shades it a couple of hours a day. Is the full sun exposoure why the new fronds are growing so slow? And yes, one frond looks like its opening already and is much shorter than the older ones. Also, some one told me that i should not prune the dead fronds intil the new ones come out. Not really sure what to do? My Windmill palm has gotten a lot of attention in my nieborhood. Mostly because i live in the Bronx, and im almost positive theres not many people growing palms here. Theres not much of anything growing here!!! Cant wait for next spring!! If my windmill survives the winter i want to try a Pindo palm. Im pretty handy so i plan i building a plexiglass green house to fit around it for the winter. Going to use christmas lights for heat when it drops below 20. Now all i have to buy is a parrot and train it to sit in the tree all day. This is the garden i just recently planted. all native plants, but they got me started with my green thumb. Hopefully as i learn more can replace some of the shrubs with bannana and more tropical stuff.

Hey Carla! I'm gonna give you my 2 cents as well. I live with 16 cats( and 11 rescue dogs) in the house. All are spayed or neutered. All are rescued strays. Some are related, most are not. All came to me a different ages. Some were born with me ( took in a pregnant mother), some were young, some were old. There are 6 females and 10 males here. I have 4 that will pee in the house. 1 old male does spray. 1 is just so feral that she freaks out, hides and then pees in my stove burners! 2 are siblings, a male and female, that suffer urinary tract trouble. The female is actually being x-rayed for stones tomorrow. They stopped using the box when it started to hurt. They associated the box with pain and thus avoided it. Needless to say, they both have seen the Vet numberous times for this trouble. I believe the problem is just hereditary with them. Looking into their mother's possible mates, I feel strongly that she bred back to her own father. The entire liter has had problems. I was able to do this because she was a stay that my mother was feeding and she was able to give me this information. The other female that freaks out so bad is also from this mother so we are not surprised that she a little mental, as some of the others from that litter are. I truly believe that all 3 of these cats have litter box issues because of their inbreeding. The 1 male that does spray came to me as an adult male tom cat. He has the big cheek patches from fighting and is FIV ( feline AIDS) possitive. He is now neutered, but does spray. I agree with quasifish that this is a behavior issue due to stress. I think he objects to there being so many cats in the house. There's only one problem with that, all my cats are people's "throw away" cats. Cats that people have dumped or abandoned. Most have problems, physical, behavioral or mental. There is no other home for them. No one wants them but me. So we have to think outside of the box to solve the problems. How I solved this one is I gave them their own room, a spare bedroom. It has a window and we removed the door and put up a screen door so they could see out and get air flow. This works great! They love their room where they only have to deal with each other and it enables me to keep an eye on the 2 with urinary trouble. If they stop using the box, I don't have to wonder who did it. The floor is vinyl for easy cleaning and the walls are painted in a semi-gloss. Everything wipes up with ease. But honesty, since Caleb (the sprayer) was put in the cat room, he hasn't sprayed. I have floor length drapes and have never found a mark on them. Now understand it is a cat room. It has beds everywhere, toys and things to climb and claw on. Everyone seems happy. All eat well and maintain a good weight. Also know that I clean houses for a living. I am a bit fussy about how clean things are kept. So to end this book, I would have to say that in my experience I don't think you have anything to worry about with this kitten. The chances of him being a sprayer are very very remote, or pretty much nonexistant. Just neuter him before 6 months old and there won't be any troubles. As for asking your Vet questions..... I used to work for a Vet and you need to remember he/she is a paid employee! You are paying them to help you and answer your questions. If this Vet or his/her staff is making you feel uncomfortable about asking for information then you need to fire their butts! That is what they are there for. That is what they are being paid for! I don't work at my Vet clinic anymore, but I call them all the time and ask questions! I even call the emergency clinic and ask them questions! If they get offended then they are a lousy clinic! As for sexing. When they are young or a male has been neutered young it is a little tougher to tell, but I will do my best to describe the difference. Pick the kitty up and face him to you, butt first. First find his rectum. It is right below the tail. Just below the rectum is his genital area (where he pees from too). In males there will be a little bit longer distance between the rectum and genital area. This is to allow for the testicals. In females, you will see that the genital are is a little bit closer to the rectum and there will be a very faint line between the rectum and gential area. If you need to, look at you other girl cats to see what I am talking about. I found a good picture, but I don't know how to post it here. So, if you email me directly, I will send it to you. yes I did overwinter it in the ground. The one in the lower right hand corner of the picture is in pot (obviously) and it was overwintered inside. They were seedlings in June 2005 when I got them. The one overwintered outside was surrounded by a chicken wire cage about 3 feet across and 18" high. I layed mini christmas lights on the soil inside the wire cage, and then piled high with leaves and grass (probably at least 2' high). I put some shade cloth over that to keep it all in place and when rain or snow was forecast I covered it with plastic to keep the moisture out. I turned the lights on when temps were forecasted below 30 deg. This was a total experiment and I chose the Washington robusta because they are plentiful and cheap. I don't rememeber what our low was last winter but we did have a few single digit nights.

My advice is to jump in and try it. It seems that keeping things dry is the best way to overwinter in the ground.

Nice pics opalm...compared to mine, your yard is quite neat. I've got a garden of organised chaos going on. I keep saying that I'm going to clean it up and delineate more...one day...right...

Hey oppalm...I like the tiki....I want to build one with a thatch roof, bamboo etc.... The palms looks great for a zone 6. I guess the pots help. Is that a queen in the middle? You just give that girl some fertilizer and watch her blow through that pot, she will fill that baby pot up.

orchidude - nice palms. That is a queen in the middle of my picture, I've had her 2 years, she has doubled in size. She's probably 8' high. I have purposely kept her in a smaller clay pot to attempt to slow down the growth. I hope it works. My first floor has 9' ceilings and I 'd hate to have to give her a way.

Your spindle looks like its planted in ground. I have a couple of spindles about 2' high, love the look of that palm. How old is that spindle? I assume you move it into the greenhouse for winter, that has to be a chore.

Excellent job overwintering that Robusat. You probably know that Washingtonia Filifera (California Fan palm) is about 10 degrres more cold tolerant and grow just as fast. I know they're not as common but they germinate so quickly and grow so fast you could start them from seed. I started some from seed last winter and they are about the size of your potted one shown. Just a suggestion. I have a Robusta in the ground which while I plan on protecting this winter I didn't really have any hopes of success. You have me re-thinking that. Keep it up!

Oppalm...the spindle is about 8 years old I guess, I raised it up from a 3 gallon pot. I have a 2 wheeler push cart that I use to haul them around in. Its not to bad when you can say you have a big guy like this. I hope to raise many more of these big babies. I love this type of palm. The big spindle palm that you see is planted in a 27 gallon pot, with a cedar planter cover that I made. I do have a new spear coming out again, if I had 4 months of warm weather, might see it open.

I will get you some greenhouse shots tommorrow.

Pardon my French...but that Spindle is bad @ss!

For Zone 7b no less!

Thats quite a testament to your efforts as most Spindles around here would be hard pressed to look that good.

I am just about choking to see sagos in the compost pile! They are so expensive here. Only towards the end of the summer do I occasionally see them on sale. I have only two that I bought as little tiny things - not much bigger than yours in the compost.

I have nursed them through two summers and a winter and now they are getting ready to spend thier first winter outdoors. I am hoping for the best.

Will those Chambeyronias present a problem growth wise in the future? They seem so closely clumped...are you planning on eventually getting rid of some of them?

That Encephalartos is not a ferox. It looks more like E. hildebrandtii or E. gratus.

You're very astute King Christian...It is indeed a gratus! I have several smaller ferox's and misnamed the one in the pic. I realized my mistake shortly after I posted, but decided to let it go and see if anyone would pick up on it...:>)...Z

Here's a few pics I took yesterday of my palms. Large one is Trachycarpus fortunei "Taylor form" (from Plant Delights), smaller is T. wagnerianus. T. fortunei has made it through two winters and is in its third growing season in the ground; the waggies are about 6 years old from seed, and have been in the ground about 5 years.

I found the coleus unnamed, being sold as "coleus for sun" at a local nursery. It's growing in part sun (shaded during the hottest part of the day) and isn't quite the bright purple it appears in the photo; in real life it looks a bit darker and has an almost velvet-like texture.

Joe, I think you meant aren't palms, but this is a palm and cycad forum and that is one big beauty! Give an idea of where it is and what zone please. Very nice.Is it a sago? Also, welcome to the forum!
