That washy has quite a trunk for having just strap leaves,very interesting.Nice euphorbias and pachys,I have some too,pachys anyway.I used to be really into pachys and started up with them again last fall,untill the palm bug bit hard.Glad to see your C.humilis came back!and don't even get me started on how slow sabals grow!You have a beautifull house with a great view,very nice!Look for those washys to pick up speed once the first fans come out.

great stuff! I wish I had the spaces you have! I would kill for even a small GH! Everything looks great! Are those Plumerias in your top photo? Do you have any other caudiciform plants? IS that also a Hoya Carnosa that is blooming for you? I used to have 3 different Hoyas years ago ( not all carnosa ) but I gave them away due to space constraints at the time. I did take cuttings of my Carnosa though, and man in just barely 2 years its gotten pretty darn big! It grows very good in the south facing window I have it in, but still has not yet bloomed.

Also, I asked you this in another thread that got deleted, weren't you the one who was trying to grow a Mango from seed at one time? If so, do you still have it? How is it doing? I just started one about 12 days ago, and it not only germinated right away, but it is about 6" tall and on its first set of leaves already!

Oh, and I forgot to metnion, that the Sabal Minor's are INCREDIBLY PAINFULLY SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOW growing when they are in the "strap leaved" stage. Most palms for that matter are fairly slow in that stage I believe. I have 2 Sabal Minors that I pulled up from a patch of hundreds of them under neath some large sabal minor's that are growing in front of a museum here in D.C. and produce massive seed each year. THere is still a whole forest of hundreds of baby Sabal Minors under and around all the large plants there.

I feel your pain when it comes to sabal Minors. I was JUST complaining on the phone to a friend about them. Weird timing huh? I bought a one gallon specimen last September, and transplanted it into a three gallon pot. It grew one leaf, and then randomly defoliated mid winter. (I always had it inside) Then it grew back two more, and it has another just starting to peak out. It has almost been a year and that's all the growth I've seen! Its crazy how slow they grow.

Chad_emrick, does yours produce the "fan" leaves yer, or is it still strap leaved? Do you keep it inside all winter? or, is it planted out now and that is what defoliated it? Did you protect it at all if it was planted out? if so, how?

Mine is still strap leafed. I bring it outside for the summer, but bring it inside for the winter. I'm not quite sure what caused it to defoliate. The leaves just shriveled up one day. It was quite random.

Ahhhh. Did they do their defoliation thing when you moved them from the inside to the out for the summer? or from the outside to the in for the winter? Just wondering.That COULD have had something to do with it. I just ask because of the S. Minor seedlings I have which have thankfully not had any problems as yet.

No, it was in the middle of the winter.

I hope yours continue having no problems. If they encounter a similar problem, let me know! Maybe we could figure out what caused this.

Jim, so you think my biggest little washy has a fat trunk then, I'm quite pleased about that actually! Looks like I'm doing something right then. I checked that biggest leaf and it is divided a lot more than I originlly thought. It's my second go with the Adeniums, I can get them to germinate easily, but the last lot died off one by one, this years batch are doing better. Those SM's are a pain in the butt, they're in 3 inch pots and are themselves only 5 inches high, the pic makes them look bigger!!! Believe me, they're NOT.

NPG, yes they are plumerias, have one 3yr old from a cutting, 4 1yr olds from seed and another 12 sprouting as I write. No I don't have any other Caudiciforms, as far as I know. Yes also to the Hoya question, its H.C. 'Krimson Queen' also from a cutting, has 5 more peduncles forming. It was given to me in '05, same as the plumie cutting. Yes again re the mango, mine is 'Kent' but I'm afraid its ailing somewhat. Suddenly started to have white mouldy patches on leaves, If I wipe it off it makes a translucent patch which then turns into a brown spreading mark and whole darned leaf falls off. Mildew?? Have treated it but its looking grim. Just after its started to push out lots of branches and new leaves too.

Chad, if I'd have known how slow these SM things were I would never have bought the seeds in the first place, I will be in my box before it even resembles a palm tree at this rate....give me WR's any time. We will soon be sitting under them, glass in hand.

Jay, thanks, hopefully the Med Fan will be ok after a shaky start, perhaps it was because I re-potted it in some extra juicy compost as the stuff it was in was just like compacted black very fine dust..most odd.
