Greetingd

Been many years since I have been around.

Sadly someone stole my main pepper is Carribean Red

which was full of peppers.

I picked up some CR but fouund a nursery with wonderful pepper varieties.

I am curious about Chocolat e & White Habs

Also are thw leaves of the chocolate flatter like the orange hab or puckered like Carribean?

The nursery has chocolate but there are plants with different leaves & I fear switching of tags.

Any comments on taste & on iding CH by leaves

My Chocolate hab leaves look puckered just like my Carribean Red, As for taste,That chocolate is way hotter than CR. I have eaten some chocolates that could compare better to a bhut.

I thought something was funny with the CH as there were 2 different leaf shapes & one was identical to the reg hab that shared the flat

Ouch on the fire
I'm comfy with the CR & really don't need more heat but was looking for adding a different flavor

Usually most seeds sprout fast for me-10-14 days give or take.With bottom heat... They (C. Chinense) seem to like sprouting better in damp soil rather than the paper towel in a zip lock method. I fill a peat pot with potting soil and put a clear plastic cup upside down over the area where the seed is.Put the whole thing on my grow lights for heat. Then I put the peat pot in a 3 gal. or larger pot once roots go through the pot. I punch holes in the pea pot before I plant it in it's permanent home. The peat pots at the $99. store are really cheep(thin) looking and break down lots quicker than the name brand ones. I like that-faster root growth into the big pot. You get 24 for a buck and tax. They seem to work for me all right so far. The Yellow Manzanos have started to open their buds today.Whooo Hooo! Tree Hab is growing pods and buds too. Baccatums are getting covered with pods...

Hi habjolokia & Bill. Unfortunately I planted all of the seeds... I do the ziplock for determining germination with seeds I collect, but stupid me didn't think to do it with these... Good idea, should have come here before planting the last batch. Thing is, the vendor seems to have a good reputation, Refining Fire. I'll give the seeds more time, if they still don't sprout I will ask for a refund. Thanks for the offer Bill, that's very nice of you, but yesterday I went ahead and ordered some Peruvian White seeds. I've heard they aren't as good as the Yucatans or the bullets (or as productive)... btw, does anyone know how it is you can trade mark something that grows naturally? Everything I've read says the White Bullet comes from the Caribbean. Doesn't seem right that you can Trade mark an heirloom. haha, maybe you should trade mark your rare "Ottawa" White Hab. :-)

Donandsara, here is a copy and paste of a post I just made on another thread regarding stress and heat levels, etc. It's from the thread about caribbean reds and congo black habs. I hope this helps. "Here's my take on it (I grew both the caribbean reds and the chocolate habs the last two years in a row.) The caribbean red hab produces very hot fruit, and the fruit are not very variable in heat, it doesn't matter if they are early season, late season, etc, they are all consistently pretty darn hot. The congo black (chocolate hab), however, can be more variable. This is true of most chinenses. Last year after hearing all the rave about how hot fatalii were, I tried one and found it to be pretty mild compared to other extremely hot chinenses like devil's tongues and chocolate habs. I adopted the notion that the fatalii weren't so hot. Imagine my surprise when I made a batch of pickled fatalii and draped them over a slice of pizza and they were hotter than almost anything that I had tried! The variability comes from the plant (and fruit) being exposed to stress. The fruit tend to be hottest when the plant gets stressed by a) high temps, b) lack of water and c) lack of nutrients. They also tend to taste best when they are stressed. Some people even purposely slice the roots when the last harvest of fruit is maturing. They believe that cutting the roots when the fruit begin to mature will make the best tasting and hottest fruit by cutting off the supply of water and nutrients to the plant. Annuums are the most susceptible to stress I believe, moreso than chinenses. I've experienced it with both. I had puriras (annuums) last year that gave me pretty mild peppers early in the season. We had a very hot and dry spell in august and I hadn't fertilized. When I came back from my honeymoon I took a bite of a ripe one and saw every star in the universe and then some. I can't speak for how susceptible baccatums, pubescens and frutescens are, though I remember my tabasco peppers being hotter later in the season and me thinking it was my imagination! I also noticed something else. Last year I fertilized with seaweed extract, which is higher in potassium. I have read that potassium helps plants deal with stress (don't ask me how). I did notice that the container plants that I gave the seaweed extract to became less variable, but remained pretty hot and good tasting. So in short, the chocolate habs will most likely be hotter than the caribbean reds. Don't underestimate either of them though, they are both brutally hot. You can't go wrong with the flavor of either of them too. They are both winners."

Thanks Groovy1. Today I got some fish emulsion and some pelletized dolomitic lime and applied both. I applied the fish emulsion as directed (2 Tbsp / Gal of water per 25 sq. ft) and the lime at the minimum amount recommended (2 Tbsp per plant) I couldn't get the kelp meal because none of the local garden stores had it. I'll have to order online. As for my fertilizing routine... I'm a newbie to the garden business. I grew a few things last year, and all hot peppers this year. My bed was new last year with garden soil. This year I added about 2-4 inches of manure and hoed it in. I planted, applied a layer of mulch, and fertilized with Vigoro Tomato and Veg 12-10-5 (in early May). I haven't fertilized with anything since. I guess I was a little nervous I'd over-fertilize. I've been reading on the forum and I hear alot about getting too much nitrogen. Another thought I had today was the possibility of the soil being too acidic. I just read a book on composting, and learned that when you compost, adding evergreen wood to the mix can increase acidity. My mulch I put on the garden to retain moisture is a cedar chip mulch. Perhaps its leaching into the soil and lowering the pH? Hopefully, if it is, the lime will help get it back up. Thanks for the advice. CH appears to be a cross...
The leaves of the frutescens are the flatter kind.
Perhaps this batch of chocolate habs is mixed with some showing less chinense traits?

Your c h looks super healthy.
I'd call that sort of puckered as they bend back from the middle. The other leaves I saw marked ch where more flat with no hills in the center.

I didn't buy one as I figured iI'd wait til the next batch came in to compare but by dping the research I think the best type would be the plants w the leaves similar to the Cab Red.

The Carribean Red is one of my favorites also,Wonderful flavor ,makes the best sauce! I think the Choc Hab is a different flavor also delicious( sliced choc's with steak is a treat!)You should definitely get one and give it a go!
The puckered leaves are usually seen on younger plants with a mag def. as the plants get older and you can throw some fert at them they flatten a bit.JMO

Got the choc hab that looks like the CR.
Gosh they were only $2 I should have got b oth but the ones that were different looked like the reg habs in that same flat % I thought maybe they were mislabled choc hab

Yeah, found a great new nursery & its going to be a smoking summer.

I'm trying a CR in ground but I hope its gets enough sun

Those look the same to me & more like the rouge choco hab leaves
I went back n picked up the different leaf chocolate hab
as it was a tad different than the orange hab it most closely resembled except the choc hab was more hairy.

Anyway I don;t know what it is but maybe its a cross
The leaves are pretty & I guess we'll have to wait n see how the habs compare

Planted it in ground
about 3 foot high & as wide.
First green fruits were jalapeno shaped so I was disappointed & trimmed it back.

The fruit ripened to a orangy red & its only about 1 1/2 long x 3/4 in wide
3 sided profile with rounded tip.
Oh its hotter than the carribean red
ouch & smells like a jalapeno noy a chinese
only the juice on the knife made the dish tongue burning hot.

I can handle the CR very well
This was sold as a chocolate hab but I knew something was up as the leaves didn't look right
Either its a cross or something else

Lower two on left is the unknown sold as a chocolate hab
top one I cut in half & other was just picked from plant

Middle pix is a unripe carribean red for size n shape
(first time in ground & peppers are bigger than in container

right pix is a black hungarian (ripens green black to red)

Close as I can ID
Size is small & the tip is not pointed
seems to be unusual
so maybe it is a cross of the chocolate hab?

I grew white habs for the first time this year...what a wonderful little dynamo! Fruity flavor, but hotter-than-hell
I dry them out and grind them to make seasoning...... :)
I have plenty of seeds or fresh habs if interested.

Well the unknown is neither white or chocolate but a small potent red.
Don't like it
burns on the tip of the tongue 4 a long time
my cr is a nice tingle on the back upper palate which I enjoy

this red is a stinger & it really is not enjoyable to have the tip of my tongue on fire
