Yucatan White hab question

As usual, I am all questions. This year I got some Yucatan Whites. I planted 30 seeds, I also have Chocolate and regular Bhuts in the same flat. All the Bhuts are up, but not one single Yucantan White. I contacted the seller (who seems to have a good reputation among the chile heads) and he informed me that he is not happy with the germination rate of the Yucatan Whites, and he doesn't sell these seeds cheap either! 0 our of 30 is beyond bad to me. Anyone else out there have any experience with the Yucatan Whites?

I had a lot of trouble with them last winter. I planted over 20 seeds and not one came up. Also from a seed source I have never had trouble with in five years. I gave up on them.

Thanks simsedward. I'm still waiting to see if any from the second batch sprouts... I think I'm going to go with Peruvian whites, although it appears that Yucatans taste better, but if you can't get any to germinate, how do you know how well they taste?

If the peppers (any variety) are just starting to turn color, pick them and put them in a paper bag at room temp for a few days and they will turn. If left on the plant to mature/color up, here in the humid South, they may get moldy inside. I've had requests for even hotter hab jelly, so I put in a 1/4 tsp of dried cayenne pepper flakes in the batch. That stays in your throat longer than just habs. (I have to have my DH taste it because even without the cayenne, it is way too hot for wimpy me.) He loves it and puts it on leftover chicken slice sandwiches. I've used the less hot version as a glaze on chicken and it really livens up the party. I also put it on goat cheese and on feta, which I find bland by themselves, to spark up the cheeses. I buy bulk quantities of hot peppers at the farmers market (unless I successfully grow them), chop them up, lay them on a cookie sheet and put it in the freezer, then when frozen, into a gallon plastic bag (they don't make a glob freezing them that way). Anytime I want to make pepper jelly I can pull a bag out and measure what I need. I also do that with onions when they are on sale for this and other "chopped onion" recipe additions, and with sweet peppers in season and cheap. I've even been known to chop up apricots and put them in little plastic bags with the recipe's pre-measured amount, and they go into the freezer too. Of course, most of you don't make as many as I do since I sell jams year 'round, but it might be something to consider - buying ingredients when they are in season/local and freezing them for later, already to go into the preserving pan. Probably yes. However, I grew them and the peppers are so small that I threw them out. It is going to take a lot of work to get a quart of peppers. I would never grow them again. they grew close to the ground and lots rotted or fell off onto the ground. terrible pepper in my estimation. one jalapeno pepper will probably give you more mash than all the white habs on a huge plant. I said to myself that it makes more sense to grow regular big habs instead of these insane tiny nothing white habs. I grow for making hot sauce. I want and need some volume, some weight. that is why I would never again grow the tiny white habs. To me they seemed very thin walls and hollow inside. For me they also were very late to ripen so most never ripened. although a few did. The same year I did about 15 gallons of habanero mash regular kind. and 10 gallons of jalapeno mash and I was just not going to spend days trying to pluck and clean those tiny dots and get nothing for it. I threw them all out in the compost bin. glad I did. I was getting 70 to 100 ripe huge habanero per plant. Almost all were beautiful ripe. and then waste time on less than one regular hab to clean and pluck all day. forget it.

John, I had bought the seeds from our local seller. Sorry, I could not remember the words "habanero chili type" when I started this thread. Only this time I rechecked the site again to get more information and I found this: "Snow White - C. chinense : A delicious little white habanero chili type that has a delicious aroma combined with a strength that burns through. If the fruit gets direct sunlight they remain white as mature." Jo, from these pods I'll get some seeds but the seeds could be crossed, I have grown it with other varieties. Pam it looks like Yucatan White as you said, I saw it on Google now. Probably it could be Yucatan White. The pod size is a bit bigger than the size of a marble (16 mm). If we grow properly the pod size could be a little bit bigger I think. I was full concentration on the other supper hot chilies. I was out of space too so some of my other varieties were neglected. Snow White is one of them. Still it is in a very small pot it has root bounded. I am thinking to re-pot. I sowed the seeds on 1st February 2013 and germinated on 13th February 2013 now she is about 10 months old :-) Thank you for the questions. Caelian

I think there could be few contributing factors affecting germination time: 1- seed age and dryness 2- Germinating temperatures. 3- Insufficient moisture and/or keeping a consistent level. 4- Depth at which seeds are sown. WORST Scenario: You have old and bone dry seeds: You bury them too deep: They are not kept moist uniformly: The ambient temps are low. My own limited experience, 8 days is the median and 14 days is max. Just recent got some super hots germinate in 5 days. My Tepin (from sore bought pod) took 7 days. Seysonn

Hi Pam,

Not sure if after the second batch you have any seeds left. If you do maybe try the ziplock bag with wet paper towel method at least this way you can see if they at least root, it's better than using a toothpick to dig around the soil to try and find the seed to see if its alive, I've done that before lol.

Last year I put in soil and placed next to the heat vent. This year it's ziplock bags unsealed wet paper towel folded over the seeds on top of he DVR lol I started on Dec 30th and yesterday 20 out of 25 red Hab seeds roots sprouted and I moved them into small pots.

Either way I hope they eventually sprout for you.

Hi Pam,

It doesn't sound like the vendor you dealt with understands basic customer service. Worse, they sold you seed they admitted they weren't happy with as well... time to move on.

habjolokia had a great suggestion if you have some seeds left. If you don't, I have some open pollinated Habanero White Bullet seeds I'd be happy to share with you. Forget Yucatan White Hab, I've got rare "Ottawa" White Hab ;-))

Hi habjolokia & Bill.

Unfortunately I planted all of the seeds... I do the ziplock for determining germination with seeds I collect, but stupid me didn't think to do it with these... Good idea, should have come here before planting the last batch.

Thing is, the vendor seems to have a good reputation, Refining Fire. I'll give the seeds more time, if they still don't sprout I will ask for a refund.

Thanks for the offer Bill, that's very nice of you, but yesterday I went ahead and ordered some Peruvian White seeds. I've heard they aren't as good as the Yucatans or the bullets (or as productive)... btw, does anyone know how it is you can trade mark something that grows naturally? Everything I've read says the White Bullet comes from the Caribbean. Doesn't seem right that you can Trade mark an heirloom. haha, maybe you should trade mark your rare "Ottawa" White Hab. :-)
