blue and red beetle ID - please

Walked by the crape myrtle today and saw about 15 of these beetles surrounding a BIG BROWN spider - THEY SEEMED TO BE FEEDING ON HIM. tHEY ARE IN SIZE HALF WAY BETWEEN A LADYBUG AND A JUNEBUG. Teardrop shaped. The front pointy part is neon blue and the rear part is red with a neon blue dot in the midle. They have 6 legs I think and the legs are jet black, long in the rear and shorter in the front, I was kinda creeped out to get too close because of the spider.

At first, they were eye level on the tree, and as the hour went by, they seemed to be dragging the spider down the treee and were at waist level.

Iam going back now with the camera, hope to get a picture for y'all/

In the meantime, any ideas?

They're nymphs (youngsters) of true bugs, probably a predatory kind.

Likely folks in your region can tell you exactly which true bug.

Thanks tashkentensis and saltcedar for the suggestions, but it's not either of those. I did a google search for the two trees you suggested. Bboy is right. The tree is evergreen, but it does shed old leaves almost continuously, which turn a bright red/yellowish before falling off. I will try and take a picture of one and post it to facilitate its identification. Thanks!

Yes, they are Colorado Potato Beetles. I have previously seen the adults around, but did not worry as they did not seem to be eating anything. Does anyone know if BT will work on them? I have some designed for Hornworm (my salsa garden nemesis), and am hoping that might help.

What I would do is apply a couple of good coats of Surround ® WP, a kaolin clay product that makes a slurry when mixed with water according to the directions. It will coat the fruit with the clay, making them unpalatable to chewing, sucking, boring, and egg laying insects and arachnids. It also protects against sunscald and heat stress. It's completely organic and safe for edibles. It does form a film that will need to be rinsed off before eating but I have found it very helpful with pests in my garden.

They look the the nymphs of the two spotted stink bug, an early instar. You've caught them doing what they do best...predate on other arthropods. They like beetle larvae and pupae, which means the ladybugs better watch out.
