tomatoe new leaves mutated

I thought my tomatoes were fine although there were probably 5 or 6 (18 plants) that I pulled off because they were black on the end. They were growing fine and all looked well. then there was an infestation of red colored bugs (looked like tiny grasshoppers)less and more than pinhead size. I sprayed with Malathion 50 and didn't work so I sprayed with spectricide and killed them. After tow weeks the new leaf growth is mutated, curly, small deformed. I used the proper amount of chemical as directed in spraying. I have been searching to find the answer and make corrections is I can...........help!

Sounds like aphids. They can cause deformed leaves.

Lots of things can cause deformed leaves on tomatoes. Insects are one. Virus is another. Can't rule out nutrient deficiencies and cultural or environmental conditions. Tomatoes are also very sensitive to herbicides.

You could try putting half a toilet paper roll or a quarter of a paper towel roll in a ring around the stem to keep out any creepers, but do this only if the plant is very small. You can also sprinkle diamotaceous Earth around the plant (and even on the plant) do it after you water too, it only works when it is dry and visible. How tiny are the plants that are getting eaten?

Well, my fresh batch of 1, 1, 1 ratio (flora series as well) didn't change anything and although they are growing rather large they still having massive curl so I just did a 2/1.5/1 ratio which I found recommended on another website. I also upped the ppm to around 1800 on this batch. It seems I'm going opposite of what you are :) Let me know if you have any luck with remedy since you're using the flora series just like me. Thanks... FYI I have a 1,000 watt High Pressure Sodium bulb for PLENTY of light. Also wanted to point out that these are "better bush tomato hybrid" sold by territorial seed company . is called (Fasciation) Probably not spelled right, and is thought to be psychological condition. ***** Fasciation is spelled just fine but I sure hope you meant to say it's thought to be a physiological condition, not a psychological one. ( smile) Although I sometimes feel that different tomato varieties have different psyches based on how they perform for me, I "think" I know that they don't.( wink) Carolyn, who simply cannot remember the name of the variety that when grown by her almost always has a fasciated main stem so there must be a genetic factor at work as well. And actually a Google search does confirm the genetics of tomato stem fasciation as one cause for that phenomenon. other causes have been suggested as well.

Are you sure the Spectracide is safe for use on vegetables? Do the instructions for the product you used state it is for use on food crops?

I don't remember seeing anything from them as labeled for vegetable garden use.

Malathion is a very broad spectrum poison that is listed by the Pesticide Action Network as a "Bad Actor" because of its potential carcinogenic and genetic damage tendencies. The Spectracide Triazicide says "Home and Garden" althjough nothjing I can find says it can be used on the vegetable garden. This does appear to be of lower toxicity then the Malathion but is still a very broad spectrum poison that will do much more harm than good because it will also kill benefiical insects.
Those leaves good have been an indication of a soil nutrient deficiency, probably not of an insect. The wee buggers you saw may well have been aphids and those can be knocked off any plant they are on with just a sharp water spray, no poisons potentially harmful to you and your family necessary.
