im in central texas and there is no way your going to be able to grow lettuce or spinach this time of year here in texas. i start my spinach and lettuce in oct 1 when the heat has died down. my spinach will grow the whole winter and replant again in feb 1. will grow until the heat comes. the cucumbers have some root rot or fusarium going on. root rot can be a cause from over watering and will wilt suddenly. i have gotten white stems on my cucumber plants and found i was over watering. they do sell cucumbers that are resistant to fusarium wilt. i have grown cucumbers from spring all through to winter. they will not get pollinated during the heat of the summer. which is useless to grow them when the heat hits 100's. i start over again by planting the middle of august. by middle sep they are setting fruit when it is cool. the sqaush needs some nutrients., looking like it is a potassium difiency. how much are you watering these plants? i start mine during the spring it will start out fast and usually slows down after the first flush of squash. but it will produce slowly. you will still have a pollination problem during the heat of the summer. bees dont like the heat either i guess. i also replant middle of august again. lot of calenders will tell you to plant first sep. but you need to count in germination time. also i start my beans middle of aug too. by the time first frost hits i have already harvested.

Spraying plants with bug juice, or leaving a can of dead bugs on display, can't hurt, and probably helps. I had read that the JB sends a scout and then the scout releases a scent telling others it's a good spot. My experience last year goes along with that. I was in the garden, one arrived and I hadn't yet set up my can. I was working on putting my glove on, but before I could, two more came, started sexing on a leaf, and then a bunch more piled on. I ran and set up the can and started flicking them in and kept the can at hand, but also on display in case there was some kind of scent of death. The first year I had JB, I got the scout and stepped on him, then left his body on the ground. I definitely think there's something to this, although I've never been able to catch cucumber beetles quickly enough. They're tricky.

hsmama11 You may want to wait a 7-10 days before deciding to do anything drastic. Your instinct to water with fish emulsion and foliar feed with seaweed may fix your problem. I have planted both seeds and transplants large and small in the past. Here is my experience. Direct seed planting can produce good results. However seed germination is inconsistent and sometimes takes much longer. Of course there is also the chance of birds, rats or ground squirrels taking the seeds. Transplanting small plants can work well when planted March 1st. As with any transplants make sure the root ball has good contact with the soil and is watered in well. Make sure you prepare the ground properly for transplant and keep the soil moist until the plants take. Transplanting with large plants can work well. The problem with transplants in general is root development. If there is not good contact with soil and transplant. Also if the soil in the container of vastly different than that of the ground you are planting in. If the soil in the container retains water much better then the soil in the ground the roots tend to stunt and stay within the space of the container soil. If this happens the plant will be stunted and produce little if anything edible. However many garden vegetable like Squash, Zuch's and tomatoes will grow roots wherever the plant touches the ground. As an example when a Zucchini is attacked by Squash Vine borers mounding soil around the plant will often result in enough new roots to survive the attack at least temporarily. Thus extending the harvest. If your plants are stunted try mounding some soil around them and water them well. Try to keep the soil moist until the plant is established. If you have extra seeds you may want to start some more indoors just in case this fails. If you have plenty of seeds another alternative is to just pull everything and direct sow using roughly three seeds for each plant you hope to grow. If you end up with more than you need just thin the less vigorous plants.
