August....Starting With Rain and Cool Weather!

Any time that you can start the month of August with cooler, cloudier and rainier than usual weather, that is a good thing....right?

After having a relatively dry July, we were actually needing rain as our yucky old clay soil down in the front pasture was beginning to crack. I know, I know, it is hard to believe that the wet, soggy, squishy, soppy, gloppy June clay turned to cracked, dry clay in late July, but it is true! That's one of the reasons I hate the clay so, and have to work so hard to improve it even just a little bit.

So, the skies are getting VERY DARK here, the temps have dropped (and they weren't that bad to begin with), the thunder is roaring, and we're expecting rain any minute now. Yippee!

In July, we had rain early in the month (5.6" thru 7-13) and then no rain at all until yesterday, when we received an inch of rain.

I'm hoping for at least an inch today.

The radar is mixed green and red and it looks like parts of Carter County and western Love County are getting pounded.

If it rains and then the rain stops, I am going to run out to the flower beds and pull weeds while the ground is soft.

It is sad that the prospect of a little rain is making me SO EXCITED, but after a couple of dry weeks, I was dreading having to drag water hoses around. Now, maybe I won't have to!

Dawn I have to agree with you I was sure hoping for rain the last few days I needed to water but with the clouds and thunder kept putting it off finaly got rain this morning sure was nice

We got over two inches of rain on Monday! And we got a shower yesterday too. In fact it has rained here every day this week so far.

It had rained the day before we left for the lake, which was on the 15th so it rained here on the 14th. It did not rain anymore those two weeks that we were gone, except my son told me we had a shower here one day but it didn't rain at the lake. He said it was a quick one and it came and went pretty fast.

It was dry when we got home so I had the water hose in hand before DH got the trailer into the back yard...lol. If I had waited one more day the rain would have saved me the trouble.

I have seen the weather actually be quite cool on August 2 before. I don't remember the year but one year, possibly around 1990 or 1991 or so, it was cool enough on DH's birthday that I actually put on sweats! Seems to me it got into the 60's that day! I kept kidding him about being born on a cold day in August.

Well gotta get cooking...just had to tell you about our rains the past few days.

Forget 'weather' and instead think 'climate'. All herbs originated from Somewhere, and once you know where Somewhere is, you can find out what the prevailing climate is Somewhere. Hence, you can find out just what conditions each herb prefers, and you can do your best to emulate those conditions. For example, from your list: Lemongrass is native mainly to South Asia. Climate in South Asia is tropical or nearly so. Tropical climate means hot and humid all year round, with frequent (often daily) heavy rain. Rain runs off quickly except in monsoonal seasons where flooding can occur. From that, you can deduce the following: lemongrass likes the heat - that means HEAT. It likes a lot of water, but prefers that water to drain away quickly. You can also deduce that: it doesn't take kindly to frost, and may not survive a severe winter. It may need to be brought indoors if you want to keep it alive, but it must have plenty of water. From the fact that it's called lemonGRASS, you can deduce that it likes plenty of sunlight, and that it can be cut down heavily and still grow. Cut, grow, cut, grow. You can research the rest of the herbs on your list in the same way to learn what is likely to do well where you live, and what won't without special care. Obviously, outside its preferred climate, a plant won't behave it quite the same way as 'at home'. It could grow more slowly; it might die extremes of weather (too hot or too cold); its growth might be stunted. Etc. Take a look, while you're researching, at the temperatures the plant prefers to germinate from seed. That will tell you a lot, too. If it lives at high altitudes, it's probably accustomed to cooler temps, and its seeds might like refrigerating or freezing (stratifying) before they'll germinate. So - botany and geography can't really be separated, when it comes to plants! I live in the subtropics, so most plant will grow here all year round, and do very well, But I can't grow things like French Tarragon or Meadowsweet, and coriander is a winter-only crop, because even in shade the temperatures here are just too hot for them. The weatherman changed his mind. It says 34 for a low here Saturday night. We may get some frost. My flowers are actually looking pretty good right now compared to summer so I was hoping for late frost this year. I want to enjoy them for awhile. I'm still seeing some butterflies and hummingbirds. I haven't been anywhere lately to shop for clearance plants. I did get some pots half-price at Dollar General this week that are plastic and sort of have a fake wicker look to them. They were cheap. Wish Lowe's would mark their pots down. I'd like to get some of those hard foam ones. I think they insulate the plant's roots better than plastic and clay pots are sooo heavy. I have several plants on my patio that need to be potted up into larger containers. I need to find a good deal on potting soil now. Our hot water heater quit yesterday which puts a kink in my plans for today. : ( I've been sitting here making myself a rather long to-do list because I have to many things to keep in my head.

Still not a single day at or above average in the forecast here. Friday and Saturday will be the worst with high temperatures in the low 40s and rain (and maybe some snow too if were really lucky (or unlucky in my opinion!)) Typically we should be in the mid 50s and maybe approaching 60F this time of the year. It looks like my plants are going to be inside for at least the next 10 days, most likely longer than that. Could this be a Spring with an extremely late last freeze for my area, or at least high temperatures that are just too cold for the tropicals to start growing? I definitely think its possible, but I am remaining positive that warm and sunny weather is just around the corner! I can want another week or 2 for nice weather, but not another month! Cool weather and still lots of rain

Yeah, me too. It's just depressing here. I'm in the NW suburbs of Detroit, so it's not like way up north in the UP of Michigan or anything. But, it's the coldest July on record at Flint, MI, about 25 miles north of me, and second coldest by just a smidge at Detroit Metro Airport, 25 miles south. My tomatos, peppers, squash are looking like they aren't going to amount to much of anything this year. My pole beans are still less than a foot tall. Okra just plain died. Melon plants are less than a foot in diameter now. Days are mostly in the low 70's, nights in the low 50's. I turned on my air conditioning one day back in early June for about 36 hours, which is the only good part. Surprisingly, I ordered 500 sweet potato slips this year, and they actually seem to be doing pretty well. Everything is planted through black plastic, so I don't know what else I can do.

Y'all, I was so excited that it was going to rain....and it did rain, but only 2/10s of an inch! We had so much thunder and such dark skies, but this storm was mostly "all blow, and no go" for us, as my dad used to say.

Bessie, I figured if we were getting too dry here, y'all were probably getting too dry over there too. What a change from a month ago!

G. M., It is strange how y'all always get so much more rain than we do, and we're only 1 county away from one another! Several days while you were gone to the lake, we had little afternoon showers pop up in Marietta and they had a pretty good rain, but we were left out/passed over out here in the county.

I can remember some cool August weather too quite a ways back. Almost every August since we moved here, though, the weather has been brutal during the first 2 weeks of the month. Our first year here, my brother and sister-in-law and their 2 kids came (from Pennsylvania) to visit and Ardmore was the hottest place in the country for several of the August days that they were here....with temps in the 108 to 113 range. They have been back to visit since then.....but only during the winter months. :)

It is only 88 degrees here right now.....on this date last year, we had a high temp of 101. I'll take 88 over 101 any day.

I was watching the news from Minneapolis-St. Paul earlier. Last night, watching it in real time, took me back to 2002 and Webbers Falls. I really feel for the people in Minnesota--what a shock to have a major bridge collapse!
