Keeping rabbits away
Comments (10)I worried about rabbits the first year we had a garden because I had seen so many around the house already (despite having a dog). I bought short chicken wire fencing to put around the garden but ran out before I could finish the second bed. The second bed had several square feet of strawberries and carrots right in the front that would be free picking for the rabbits, but they never disturbed them... it seems that rabbits prefer clover and my weed-filled yard was FULL of clover. I'd watch them hop right up to the strawberries and choose the clover just in front of the bed and leave the strawberries alone. I was shocked, but in 3 years I've yet to put more fencing around that second bed and the rabbits never seemed to bother it. If you don't want to deal with fencing, maybe plant a patch of clover for the rabbits away from your garden before deciding if a fence is really necessary. Comments (3)I feel I have found the correct installation which is the cure to hold the Donuts in place (w/o any downward pipe as 1st attachment). âÂÂFinallyâ the 2nd attachment shows the Donut is put in place before the Pop-UpâÂÂs head is screwed on. âÂÂMost Headsâ holds the Orbit Donut in place and was found in a review vs any instructions. This makes since except for the Pop-Ups heads 2-3â below the ground. Those Donuts stay in place due to their depth to the top of the Pop-Ups. Plus, they are dangerous if accidentally walk on. It was hard to believe the local Installer that services the system felt the 2-3â deep (below ground) did not need couplings, Etc to raise them to ground level....See Morehow do you keep cats away??
Comments (10)I have outside cats only because a mother cat and her four kittens adopted us. Since I could not find homes for them and didn't want them all in the house, we made a nice cat house outside for them and had all five (including the mother cat)fixed. We live in the country and we have had them for five years. Humane societies are overrun with unwanted cats. So instead of adding to their population, we took responsibility for this mother cat, gave them a home with food & water every day and shelter. Yes, cats will catch birds and other wildlife and you will have unfortunate casualties. However, we also have hawks that prey on our hummers and wild birds. We try to hang our hummingbird feeders up high because of the cats. I've read to put a collar with a bell on them to warn birds of their presence. However, they just seem to pull the collars off. Since they are now adult cats, they roam the fields and return with rats, mice and voles. I am thankful they do this. Also, when they were smaller and tended to stay home, I put out a large litter box for them. I used a large plastic container I got at Wal-Mart and cut a hole in the side. They used it instead of my flowers on most occasions. Just a few ideas of what we did and why we don't keep them in the house....See MoreHow do you keep ants away from an opuntia (and other plants)?
Comments (13)Hey again! I would not rate diatomaceous earth as 'quite dangerous', but it is to some extent damaging if large amounts are inhaled. It does work quite well, though, mixing it in some water and drinking it to take care of parasites, and clean the intestines. That aside, I will give you an example about how it would be to apply it. I have a peach tree that, in the summer, gets quite a large ant infestation. I would then proceed to sprinkle the diatomaceous earth on the soil, especially concentrating it around the trunk of the tree. In a tree, there is one way up and down. Putting the Earth around the trunk cuts off that route, and forces the ants to leave, for lack of resources. That way, you can avoid altogether the sprinkling on the leaves. Hope I helped!! ~palmsandsnow...See Morejanetr
