When Can I Birng My Plumeria Out Of Dormancy?

hey everyone, i live in NYC which is Zone 6.. when is the best time to bring my plumeria out of dormancy?? tomorrow the temp will be in upper 60s and low 40s

I also live in zone 6 but I keep mine under grow lights and the HPS light provides them with temps in the mid 80's and comnbined with the high quality light, I let them come out whenever there ready.

I have noticed that they themselves will show signs of life on there own. For example tiny little leaves will start to grow.

If you cannot give it full sun and warm temps then I wouldn't try until you know that it can go outdoors into warm temps and full sun.

This is just what I have learned myself. Others may have better advice.

I don't put mine out until the lows are in the high 40s to 50s. Right now I'm bringing them in every few days when the low drops below 48 but they're out for the most part. They're already starting to separate claws and prepare to leaf out (the one's that are dormant).

I'm assuming you're referring to annual geraniums - ? This is about the time I start potting them up (I store in paper bags in the crawl space over winter). I will take them out of storage, trim back severely, and pot up in potting medium, water (no fertilizer yet) - DH refers to them as the mummy plants at this stage LOL! Under the grow lights they go. In a short while growth will begin (if it hasn't already - often they will be showing growth when I pull them out of storage). I fertilize with water-soluble fertilizer after steady growth begins, and they grow on under under the lights until daytime temps warm up. When daytime temps warm up (usually mid to end of April), I will start taking them out on the sunny patio during the day, back in at night - that bright sunshine makes a world of difference, it's worth the effort. I keep that up until temps are warm enough at night, then leave them out, bringing them in at night if a cold snap is forecasted overnight - same as with any annual before planting time. If yours are potted already, just trim them way back, water them well, and follow directions as above. I've been overwintering the same geraniums for years and they are HUGE, they get bigger and better every year, it really is worth the effort as far as I'm concerned, I couldn't afford to purchase geraniums that big every year.

Annamaria- I would bring it out now in a zone 10 and give it a couple of tablespoons of epsoms salts (or sulpo mag if you have) worked into the soil or mixed in warm water, let cool a bit and water the plant. In two weeks I would fertilize with your growmore watering the plant and the soil and repeat every 10 days until leaves get over 6 inches and then use every 7 days. You may need to add some more epsoms salts in 6 weeks. I would pick up some spray-n-grow and spray as directed on leaves in between fertilizing. This is just a simple path to get bud formation as long as your plant is not root bound in a pot. Jack at Kimis has recommended some other growmore formulas which I am trying this year but I trust his knowledge. I have had good results with the above although I am sure there are better methods, if you can find sources of the products. Bill

When plumeria has little roots, can I pot up and start watering?

Here's a tip... When rooting a cutting, always be sure to plant it at least 3" deep into the potting mix and add a layer of pea gravel (small rocks) on top to hold cutting in place (roots are tender and can break easily if cutting moves). I planted my first cuttings this way (and have used this method since), they all rooted within a month and had new branch starts- indoors (during February) with no extra lighting!... I used a 50/50 mix of Perlite and peat/potting soil, watered deeply at planting time and let them dry out for a month before rewatering. *Never plant a 'fresh' cutting, always allow at least a week or so for the cut to heal/dry. Hi..I have one plumie so far and living in South Central Vermont; the weather was actually warmer (hotter) in April this year than it has been for the past 3 weeks at least; damp, cool, rainy...temps are usually no higher in the daytime than 70ish if we're lucky..the mid 60s is more the average!...nights have been below 50...mid 40s. So I have been bringing mine inside at night not wanting it to get cold. It does have one inflo and some small but growing leaves on the 2nd branch and I don't want to "endanger" that progress. I wonder if it will ever be warm enough for it to bloom! The former has never had any blooms at all. The growth progress seems rather slow. I haven't fertilized it as yet. From some of the responses above I should be leaving it outside at night..is that correct and will fertilizer help promote growth...leaf or blooms and what kind etc is best. Thanks for any help.

Hello Shorjai,

I wouldn't bring yours out just yet...like Andrew and the others mentioned...wait until these cold nights break..

My temps here in VB are so unstable right now...i just brought all of mine in again for the...5th time..LOL...im not taking a chance...we are looking for the lows tonight around 40*

As far as watering...have you given it any water over the winter? If not, then you need to give it a little...they still need a little water while they are dormant...

Just to be on the safe side...i would keep it inside, give it some water...depending how large your container is...for my 5 gallon containers..every month during the dormant season i would give them about 2 cups of water...then let them dry out...for the smaller containers..lets say i gallon..1/2 -3/4 cup of water...per month.

if it has been bone dry all winter...please give it a drink...it will be very happy that you did!!!

Be patient..wait for the temps to be above 45-50 at night before you bring them outside..then you will know they will be safe...place them in a sunny window and let them adjust to the sunlight if you have had them in a dark or somewhat dark area for the winter...

You can always give them a "wake up" drink of water with some Epsom Salt in it to help them "awaken" from there time sitting.... some use 1 tablespoon of EP per gallon...I use 2-3 tsps per gallon...

I also live in NYC. Definitely keep it inside for now. This time last spring I had my Plumeria Pudica in the ground already, and I had all my other plumerias outside also. They stayed outside from then until the fall, but last spring was really warm (by this time last year we already had several days in the 80s and 90s).
My plumerias are all breaking dormancy indoors right now. Some never went into dormancy and others went semi-dormant, but with the longer days and warmer windows, they are all slowly growing back.
Get them started indoors (keeping them by a warm window should be enough to get them to start growing) and then when temperatures during the day are consistently 70+ and nights are consistently 45+ (ideally 50+) then you can take it outside. Who knows when that will be though! By late April/ Early may, you should be good for sure.
Also make sure not to put it in full, hot sun right away. It will damage the bare branches (or at least it did to some of mine)
