Ebay bummer

My cuttings from Evelyn never arrived. I won them on 3/16 and contacted her this morning asking about them. Unfortunately she's now in CA and won't be back in Hawaii until May to check her records so I told her just to refund my payment. I'm sure it has to do with the PO and not her fault but it's still disappointing. She had some nice cuttings that I won. Oh well, maybe that's someone's way of telling me to cut back on the buying. lol

    Hi Karyn
What a shame on Evelyns cuttings. Did she send them from Hawaii or CA? Says she is in San Diego now. Mail is odd, you may still get them. Hope she refunds, she appears to be nice but all business through e-mails.

I did contact her and she said that since it was 3 cuttings that she'd have to wait until the beginning of May when she was back in Hawaii to check her records. Unfortunately that puts me well past the 45 day deadline to file a Paypal claim. I really had no choice other than to file a claim for undelivered goods. After the claim was filed she emailed that she would send me cuttings from CA but they wouldn't be the same size or variety. Well it was too late, the claim had been filed and that wasn't a satisfactory resolution anyway. I was refunded by Paypal and I sent her an email saying that if they did by chance show up and were viable I would certainly pay her for them. I just didn't think it was fair to leave me waiting until I had no chance to file a claim. If she could have checked her records before the 45 days were up I would have waited. In the claim I did say that I'd purchased similar items from her in the past and was always satisfied and that it was likely a shipping problem, not anything intentional on her part. I just didn't want to be out $40. I can go buy another cutting from Hawaiisandy with that. I'm sorry I had to do that but I didn't feel like I had any other options. I certainly hope she can get some resolution through the PO.

If you buy in bloom you can examine the flowers and check their bits for gender. Otherwise you could order smaller, cheaper specimens through the male. Or there might be a native plant specialist within driving distance that has younger specimens. Discounted potted stock at retail outlets here may not have been fertilized since being received by the grower in spring. Plants can be fairly severely nutrient deficient yet look OK to the unwary. Specimens planted in diminished condition do not establish nearly as readily as those that are in fine fettle, may even dwindle and die after planting instead. Plants that have been in the same pots for a long time may also be rootbound. This is very common in stock sold in my area, although often the worse problems are due to careless handling by growers years before the finished specimens are sent out to retailers. Tightly bound roots near the base of the stem(s) dating from when the once-small plant was left trapped in a liner, band or other small container are often pretty much impossible to rectify once the tree or shrub has grown much larger.

jodik, A week is not too long in transit for most orchids but certainly not all. Whether or not it is "too long" is dependent on the plant. A knowledgeable and conscientious vendor will give you confidence. If you aren't assured of those qualities in your vendor, be prepared to lose plants now and then from shipping and handling. BTW, my S&H cost for 2nd Day, FedEx service from Hawaii was "only" $12 for a full size, mature Cattleya hybrid of many pseudobulbs. I consider that price to be quite reasonable. Next Day service isn't necessary. --Stitz--

I am not sure how it works with stores but for regular fees if you maintain a very high detailed rating score of 4.8 the will lower your final ending value fees by 15 percent with the discount if you can get it plus the free gallery it is not so bad of a deal. With the discount for me it actually works out to be a ok deal as I use gallery on every single auction I run. Also hopefully it will get sellers to improve there customer service and general selling practices.

Ttodd - It went for $70 plus the shipping. That's a bummer about the throw. Yup just tell yourself it wasn't meant to be! Parma - You might be right. I'll keep telling myself that too. I did email the seller earlier in the day asking how many inches you could shorten the chain and she replied saying only 4 1/2" so it actually would've been too long. A new light isn't on the top of my to do list but I'll just keep my eyes open. I think I can do better than the one that's up.

    Karyn,
I have been getting my center cuts from her. I guess bad things happen it just seems to be happening to you. Between your critters and the kids it sounds like you may need some more cuttings. I am glad to here you got your money refunded. You right it is a bummer. I have never bought from Hawaiisandy before how do her sticks look?

I have about 30 cuttings from Hawaiisandy over the years and they have all been outstanding and all have rooted. I find her one of the best sources of quality plants. I also have had wonderful cuttings from Maui plumeria gardens (Jennifer Brunner) especially her rooted plants. Bill

Hawaiisandy has very nice cuttings of some beautiful varieties. I don't have many from them because a number of their cuttings are a bit too pricey for me. I've never bought from Maui Plumeria Gardens. Another Ebay seller that I've been very happy with is Emmersonsambassador.

    Hi Karyn,
I might of thought being your were a good returning customer, she would have sent you new ones to replace the ones lost,. Good faith type thing. Then you said you would have paid if the the lost ones did come. has to be trust sometimes there.

I don't do paypal, but do understand how you have to file..pray you get them one way or other.

Hawaii sandy, do watch her auctions, but gets too pricy for me too. such a buying war frezy there, but still may try.

Karyn, IÂve bought from Maui Plumeria Gardens and will second what Bill said about them being an outstanding source of cuttings. I havenÂt yet bought from Florida Colors, but will in the future. They are well spoken of and have reasonable prices.

Sandy is great, but as noted, if you have your heart set on a particular cutting, everyone else wants that one too. 1-Stop-Aloha sells great multi-tip cuttings and isnÂt as well known as Sandy.

I also won a box of cuttings from Evelyn and it never came and so after I emailed her, she mailed a second box. First one still has never come and it has been over a month. Second one came but instead of 20 cuttings there was 19 and with no padding some of them looked bad. After a week or so I did get the last one that made it 20. Most of the time I order from Maui Plumeria Gardens, have 4 different times and they are send fast, wrapped well and she does send a bonus one all of the time. Most have even bloomed the first year. I have order from a couple of other people on ebay but will say that Maui Plumeria Gardens is the best I have ever got. I do have a lot that already have leaves and am looking forward to enjoying all of the flowers this summer. Enjoy your weekend, Barb
p.s. Have 3 seedpods that should be ready in May or June, two on a plastic pink and one on a pink with yellow middle.

    Hi Philip,
I have not had good luck with florida colors, bought two grafted plants last year, aztec gold and candy stripe. My plants arrived damaged, was PO fault. FC replaced one plant aztec gold , candy stripe was ok.

They replaced aztec gold plant, it arrived, was solid rust all over the leaves...swift. I took off leaves, treated the plant.

The plants just would not put out leaves, just put out about 8 leaves 2 sets. I only have one aztec gold left others died, very small roots, planted it in the ground. will see if it makes it this year. Graft seems good.

Now most have very good luck with Florida Colors, heard their fall plants were covered in rust too..but my opinion.

    Hi Philip,
I wanted to come back in and comment again on Florida Colors..now Luc the owner is a master of grafting. Many have taken a special cutting they wanted to make sure it would make it and sent it to him. He is great at this..So don't count them out.

    Hi Karen,

IÂm not sure I would order grafted plants from Florida Colors. I would need to call first if it were one they only offered as a grafted plant. Maui Plumeria Gardens will not ship rooted plumeria to Arizona because Arizona has some sort of problem with it. Because Arizona is close to Hawaii and California, itÂs possible Florida Colors has never had an order from here for a grafted plant and had to deal with Arizona regulations. IÂve encountered other sellers of tropical plants who state they cannot ship rooted plants to my state.

I'd known about the citrus restrictions to AZ but have been surprised to see that many tropical plants cannot be shipped there. Do you know the reason?

I haven't purchased from FC before but they are one of the few that will sell wholesale and the difference between their retail and wholesale prices is quite significant. It might be another case of "you get what you pay for" but I'll probably try a few. I also like rooted plants but don't have any grafted ones. That was a nice thing about the plumerias from Emmersonsambassador, his cuttings were nicely rooted and are doing well. I didn't get them until fairly late last summer so they didn't have much of a growing season but they've come out of dormancy and have put out lots of foliage. I'll definitely take a look at MPG. Thanks all.

    Problems with Evelyn ?
read my comments on a previous follow up about E bay.
I payd around 70 dollars, winning 4 bids including bonuscuttings getting 1 cutting(one bad one was also included)so normaly i should get around 8 cuttings.first she said that the money didn,t arive (western Union).i called western union and the money was collected, then an co-worker made the mistakes. After months i said to stick the money...... But after i contacted people who were bidding to tell them about her mistakes, she contacted me and ask me not to do so beiing honest blablabla,i said oke but do your business as they should be.
    Broken promisses i see

ps: it also then was to late to make a claim, same as Karyn

I didn't wait for her to research her shipping notes and filed the claim. Thankfully I received a refund immediately. She did send me an email this morning saying that she understood why I filed the claim. In her defense I have bought nice cuttings from her in the past but after this I doubt I'd buy from her again. I wish it hadn't escalated to the point that I had to file a claim.

    Karyn,
It seems like Evelyn has had a very good business this year. Sometime sellers got mixed up. Recently, I bought a set of tube cutting system from a vendor on eBay. The product was supposed to arrive 2-3 days. However, 2 week later I hadn't received the package from him. I emailed him for the delivery confirmation number. He told me that he mixed up and refunded the shipping charge back to me through paypal. He mailed the package to me right away. I was glad that I followed up what I ordered.
My suggestion to you is not to give up your favorite seller. It was definitely not her intention to make this happened. I'm glad that you get money back.

    Hi Karyn,

I did a bit of online research today and cannot find just one reason for it. The citrus restrictions are mandated by the feds.

I was warned when I moved here that AZ will destroy all houseplants in moving vans or cars that are intercepted at the stateÂs borders. Due to budget shortfalls, the AZ Out-Of-State Houseplant Police are not active at this time and I was able to smuggle plants in when I moved. AZ also has a major paranoia about morning glorys, but I brought my stash of MG seeds in and have ways of obtaining more.

Some of the restrictions appear to be legitimate efforts to protect the stateÂs crops from pests. Others look to me like efforts to protect AZ nursery operations from competition. A few are just due to ignorance. The state recently lifted a restriction against the release of Monarch Butterflies raised in captivity in other states. I suppose someone realized millions of Monarchs cross our borders every year on their way to and from Mexico.

The state has given itself broad powers to intercept and destroy for a number of reasons. I suspect a lot of growers donÂt want to negotiate the Byzantine regulations and refuse to ship here because of the hassles. I just discovered an eBay merchant I bought from when I lived in CA wonÂt ship a lot of his stuff here. I think he will ship Dutch bulbs because they just pass through his hands on the way to their final destination; I hope so because I planned on buying some from him this fall.

    Hi Karyn and all,
I think on Evelyn she has a bad paperwork system. Through paypal she should be able to check her invoices and know who has paid and who has not.. I feel also she is getting confused who she sent too and whos she didn't. Wonder Karyn if she sent yours. Told me she had a huge inventory to sell.

Now I ordered two cuttings from her, payed with a personal check. Received my two cuttings, am very pleased, gave feedback. Tonight I got a new invoice dunning me for payment again..wrote back I got my cuttings, can produce bank statement that my check were sent if needed.. then asked for feedback of payment recieved..am concerned she might forget again that I payed..and give me a negative. There again, I should have sent a "I have paid" through ebay..will in the future.

She does say payments like mine checks go to Maui..she has to wait to go home to verify? Will pull back here, she doesn't keep proper records.. Is a nice lady..afraid to buy again.

This is an additional tool for checking up on eBay buyers or sellers. This site will show all negative feedback ever received by an eBay member, saving you the hassle of going through pages and pages of comments. I seem to have been very lucky judging from what I found using this tool. Several sellers IÂve had good transactions with have some pretty bad feedback. Mind you everyone IÂve ever bought from had a rating of 98% or better. Some of the bad feedback is bogus ranting, but some of it indicated sellers who have difficulties in managing their businesses.

    http://www.toolhaus.org/

A seller who is an acquaintance of mine was accused of selling fake antiques by someone who bought from her on eBay. IÂm inclined to doubt she would do such a thing, based on my interactions with her and my impression of her character. IÂm not an expert, but IÂve examined some of the items she sold and if they were fakes, they were very convincing ones. Again, this is one more tool to assist you in making a decision, and if I didnÂt know this seller personally, I would analyze how credible the accuser is before making a decision.

Thanks for that link Philip. There was something else very similar that I used to check negs but they began charging so I stopped. I normally don't bid if someone has below a 98% rating but you do need to check and see if all negs are legit.

Karen- Emersonambassador is the site for Emerson Willis, a good friend of Bud Guillot's who travels and collects exotic plumerias. Bud brought Emerson and his wife by a few years ago and he was really a nice guy and a true lover of the plumie. I would think he would be a very honorable individual to deal with. I have a Ryann Chelsea which I believe was one of his and i have a red called "ambassador" that I got from Jim Little's nursery which was named after Emerson. Just some extra facts. Bill

Great pic. Thanks for posting it. It's nice to put a face to a name, kind of like the thread that was started the other day. By the way your wife is adorable, as are you : ) Emerson was extremely nice and helpful. I've only bought a few plumerias from him, one is an Emerson's Pink Nova that I hope will bloom this year. They were all rooted and very healthy and if I remember correctly he tossed in an extra rooted cutting.

That PV behind you is beautiful. Has it recovered? How come it's always one of the favored plants that gets damaged? Is that some twisted version of Murphy's Law? lol
    Thanks again,

    Bill,
Were you able to save your PV at all?
    Valerie

  • tdogdad

I did save it but it is basically a two inch stem coming out of the pot about three feet with three little skinny branches regrowing from the stem. One does have an inflo growing so I look forward to some varigated flowers this June. I think in five years the plant will be doing well again but will not have the perfect balance that it had before the disaster. Those Santa Ana winds have caused a number of garden disasters in my yard over the years. Murphy's wind. Bill

She either sends them from Hawaii or CA. She just needs to straighten out her bookkeeping system. I filed with Paypal and she refunded my payment almost immediately. I really have more than enough cuttings now and all are doing well with lots of foliage. I don't think I'll be buying anymore unless I want something special from Hawaiisandy or one of the Thai plumies.
