Summer savory, I make my own poultry seasoning now instead of the pre-mixed. I season to taste, know I use that and sage (quite a lot of that), can't remember what else, parsley, a little thyme, a little majoram if I have it, onion, celery (including leaves), bread cubes, chicken broth w/melted real butter, water to get it the right dampness, salt, pepper, no rosemary, no garlic, sometimes a little Lawry's seasoned salt. I don't use recipes for a lot of things any more, just dump. Here are lots of ideas for it, hope the link works. Had to chuckle about your Slimy_Okra moniker. We're not in prime okra country but I have a good spot for it. Nine times out of ten I can sell every pod I can find. Among my customers are a number of ex-southerners and then others who just like okra. Don't know how much I could actually sell as rarely have it on table long. Anyone who shops later probably doesn't even know its been available. Once in a while one of regular purchasers doesn't show up a particular week. So I put out the box(es) saved for him later in the morning and someone nearly always snatches them up. The major thing I sold less of this year was cut flowers. It was consistently less all season, so am pretty sure that's an economy thing, There wasn't any increased competition in the market that might account for it. Also, at times I had some gorgeous dahlias and hated to see them go abegging.

Finished the greenhouse repair and moved on to the chicken fence - cutting all the boards for 4, 64" panels. That was as far as my bundle of 1x2's went. Charlene, I have Australorps and a Barred Plymouth Rock. They are too heavy to fly much of anywhere. I've never seen them 3 feet off the ground even in panic. I said that they can't get in the front yard but that isn't really true. One thing, they could actually crawl under the gate . . . they've just never done that and neither did the other hens I've had. They are fairly timid creatures and aren't really out long enough to be too adventuresome. They ALWAYS get a treat when they are put back in the coop - even if it is just a little handful of something. Therefore, whenever they even "think" that there's a chance for a treat - they are ready to run home. The only exception is if they are "deeply" involved in a dust bath. Then it may take some coaxing. I may use the panels just for a portable pen. It would be very small but I'd probably still use the only-out-for-a-couple-hours schedule. The concern I have is that it's only 32" high and they may decide that they could clear that. Still, the gate is only 36" and the chicken wire around the bells/foxgloves is only 36". Of course, if they tried to fly into the bells/foxgloves, they would crash into the greenhouse wall . . . I really think that treats are powerful - altho' just like with kids, they can have too much of a good thing. But, if they "think" they can have a piece of cheese or something, and since there isn't a rooster with his own agenda, you could probably guide them into any enclosure that you want to use for them. They could take a stroll around the yard with you out there with them, then go into a portable pen for a few hours. Anyway, that may be Plan B for me this year. Alternately, there's Plan C and that is to buy more 1x2's and another can of paint. Steve

I don't grow peppers and tomatoes in the ground here due to root knot nematodes. I did stick one cayenne in the ground just because I had no more pots to put it in. I'm not sure what the problem is with the others, which were grown in containers with commercial potting soil. They started out well, then stopped when it got so hot (mid-to upper 90s every day). Heat has never affected my chili peppers before. I put the bell peppers into a spot where they got afternoon shade, but they still struggled. The leaves were all crinkly, so I added eggshells for calcium. Maybe lime would have been better, but they like acid soil, so maybe not. I admit I'm not used to growing these things in containers. I've always grown them in the ground, but the soil here is terrible and until I can build it properly, I can't really plant much in it.
