Hi everyone. Glad most are receiving the cooler air. Hope Dawn is also. Was 54 here this morning. They are saying possibly 90 one day this week and then cooler again. Fall type weather is a little earlier this year. Hopefully that doesn't mean an early frost. If so I will have tons of green maters. Jay

It was so cool and pleasant this morning and for a second straight day too! I was out in the garden for a while enjoying it and working in the garden. It was 56 degrees early this morning although in the very low 60s when I went outside around 8 a.m.

Just two weeks ago, the overnight low at our house was 84 degrees.....and today our high is supposed to be about that. This is a great cool ending for August.

All of you who had lows in the 40s....brrrr! That's too cold for me in August. Although the cooler nights and days are nice, I hope it doesn't mean an early first freeze.

Jay, I especially hope your tomatoes have a chance to ripen before the cold arrives. After all you've been through with those plants this year, you deserve a ton of red ones.....not green ones.

I believe the cooler weather is supposed to last all week here. Even 90 degrees wouldn't be bad....not after having the upper 90s and 100s for so long in August.

It actually felt chilly earlier this morning. What a blessing to be able to work outside without breaking a sweat. Looks like we're going to at last have some enjoyable days in the garden instead of heat torture.

Yup, cooler in Edmond too. I had all windows open overnight, and it got cold enough in here for Arthur to visit me.

I got to enjoy it long enough to go from the house to the vehicle, then from the vehicle to the building where I work. :(

I sure envy those of you who have the opportunity to go out and really enjoy this nice weather. Make the most of it, please, you have to make up for people like me who are stuck inside. ;)

I went out fishing with my grandfather - something we'd been planning to do since last spring and never got our schedules coordinated. The lake sure was cool! The water was 77 and the air was... I don't know, 50? Coupled with the wind from driving the boat across the lake it was COLD!

Didn't catch much, but it sure was nice to hang out, catch some sun and spend some time with him.

55 here. I put shoes on to do my outdoor chores instead of the flipflops I've been wading the wet grass with. I love it but hope it doesn't mean an early freeze as my fall cucs and beans are barely up good.

Nice cool day with 1.3 in rain. I have been very busy getting to kids moved to college and starting another school year myself so was glad to have God do the watering for me. It's too muddy to work in garden this evening but is supposed to be 92 tomorrow so will dry out quickly. Hope the rest of you that need rain get some. The panhandle almost always needs rain.

Barbara, I loved your description of our usual summer weather as "heat torture"! I kept waiting for it to get 'too hot' today, and it didn't. There's nothing like October-like weather in August!

Moni, We tried sleeping with our windows open the first few years here, and it didn't work out too well. It was too noisy....frogs, coyotes, owls, nighthawks, Chuckwalla's Widow, doves, etc. I never thought that natural sounds could keep me awake, but they do. I hope Arthur doesn't stick around too long!

Debra, If it makes you feel any better, we didn't enjoy it at all. Well, that's kinda not the truth....but a scorpion bit me on the index finger and it swelled up and hurt like mad....so even perfect weather doesn't guarantee a perfect day. I can't blame the scorpion on the weather either.

Game bird, I think you win the prize for the perfect day. I am sure it meant as much to him as to you.

Dorothy, Amen! Me too. I am going to be really frustrated if we have an early first freeze. My fall beans and cucs are in about the same shape as yours and I'm hoping for another couple of frost-free months so they'll be able to produce.

Jan, Oooh, cool and rainy is great. Glad y'all got the rain as you undoubtedly need it more than most of us. I don't think y'all ever get enough rain there. Our child's college days are behind him, and the grandchild is too young for school....so, no back-to-school or back-to-college shopping or anything, which feels so odd to me.

I watered today, so my garden got artificial rain.

And, everyone, our low of 56 early this a.m. was a record low for this date for Marietta. It is not often we set a record low in summer....it felt almost cold, which was nice!

Tomorrow is September! Where did our summer go?

The weather has been nice here, but I keep looking at my garden and wondering if anything will have time to make before it gets cold. I have at least one small tomato on the plants I planted in July, and a lot of blooms. My beans are tall and have a few blooms, but are not blooming heavily yet. Cukes are covered with blooms but some of the leaves are looking bad already. I planted some cowpeas and they grew to 10-12 inches and have just been sitting there. Unless we get hot weather again, they probably will just sit. Lots of blooms on the peppers again, and some of the squash planted in July is starting to set fruit. Again, I am pushing my luck on getting winter squash from some of those vines. I like the cool, but it makes me think winter is close. Hope I'm wrong.

Cool here this morning in north Lake Thunderbird....I think 58 but it felt cooler as I too was walking from the house to my car. But this evening....it feels even cooler! Matter of fact, I just checked the outdoor thermometer @ my kitchen window and it says 48...brrrr. Guess that means my okra is finished! I'm sure thinking we're going to have an early winter...I'm going to check my Farmer's Almanac. Everyone...pull out the sweaters!

Paula, I lived at Lake Thunderbird for a few years. We lived in the red brick house just north of Lakeview School. The one with the big red barn and lots of white fence.

Wish I could go fishing with my Grandpa. Or even my dad.

I went out and did some clean up yesterday, and got the second batch of tomatoes out that I had been accumulating in the freezer. I had enough for a canner load, although had to "rob" DH's stash of three ripe tomatoes to finish out the last jar. He's not happy with me, but hey, I left half of one for him! LOL There are green ones out there, he'll have more before the season's over.

I had my windows open and I enjoyed the sounds of the tree frogs, the locusts and the hoot-owl that visits the park behind me. BUT, then something happened and the dogs in the neighbor's yard on the other side of my NFH neighbors next door started barking like crazy, and that got the three dogs next door started and I ended up having to close my window and turn on the ceiling fan just to drown out that noise.

Those of you who work during the day -- your time's coming. I spent many, many years just traveling through each day's weather and spending most of every day inside an office where there wasn't even a window. If it rained I wouldn't know unless someone came and asked me if I needed to roll up my car windows!

I, too, am starting to wonder if we're going to have an early frost and a hard winter. I hope not!

Jerreth and I had to run an errand in Tulsa yesterday in the late afternoon. So we got home late for milking & chores and really had to hit it hard. While she was cleaning up from the milking an armadillo came out from under the adjacent building and scurried across the fence line into our neighbor's field. She yelled and let me know. But I couldn't find it. All this to say, for the rest of the night, until time to rise, I wondered, every time our Great Pyrenees started barking, if perhaps he wasn't chasing that critter!

My soaker hose broke the other day. We really need to do some deep watering. It is DRY here!

I stayed in mostly yesterday, only did my usual Monday morning walk. But at least I got my big basket all cleaned out. :)

Every time I need the dining table cleared off, we put all in that basket. Well, it had been overflowing.

I sorted my gardening magazines by month, rather then years, and later in the evening went trough all from September through December. Now I can give the stack away. Only two made the cut for future reference.

Of course, I did the same with my cycling mags, but still have to review them.

Arthur is here to stay. There isn't much I can do besides take pills, or keep them joints warm. With other words, I am not totally looking forward to the cooler morning. Here I sit, with my full finger gloves on, typing away. But at least, that way my finger joints don't hurt.

And don't even get me started on warm clothes. I wore my warm turtleneck yesterday. That was a first. Never needed it in August, or for that matter in September before. But then Arthur (arthritis) has spread, and is more painful now.

Got to plant a forsythia and a balloon flower plant today. Got both a couple of days ago. Forsythia was half price at Walmart... and just begged me to come home with me. :)

Moni, I wondered what you meant by Arthur. Now I get it. A few years ago when I complained about the arthritis in my fingers a friend held up his wrist and showed me his copper bracelet. "It really does help," he said. And he made me one out of copper wire. It does help. He wears his 24/7 but I couldn't get used to sleeping with it and take mine off at night. I also switch wrists as both hands hurt. For what its worth. And you probably already take fish oil, which also helps.

Well all...it's 64 this morning out at the FAA. Didn't seem quite as cool at the house either. Think the cooler weather will slow down any fungus? I'm still spraying my plants but I'm doing some wishful thinking!

Carol - I know just what house you're talking about! That's right around the corner from us! We're on Franklin and pass it when we're going to Denver Corner. They have yet another restaurant there. Bubba's BBQ. It's not bad....it beats driving in to town for a bite! The drive around the Lake should be getting really pretty soon with the turning of all the leaves! Glad you know exactly what kind of sand I'm gardening with!

It was 60 degrees here this morning and I worked in the garden for couple of hours.

First, I picked okra and blackeyed peas, having already picked tomatoes for a long time last night. I had to use the ladder to get all of the Tess's Land Race Currant tomatoes because that cage is 8' tall, and the plant has gone all the way to the top of it and then back down again.

Today I am going to dehydrate small tomatoes and make salsa with the large ones, but I did spend time weeding and mulching the fall veggies until we got the phone call to come see the cougar in the trap. It wasn't a cougar...but that's a story on a different thread.

I do not want an early freeze....no, no, no, no, no! This is the first year in ages we've had enough moisture in July and August to have a good fall garden and I want for it to last a while. I do have some floating row cover frost blankets that give 8 degrees of protection, so I might be able to get some plants through the first cold night or two. Then, if we had a few weeks of Indian Summer, we'd still get production.

I can't believe some of you had temps in the 40s! That's just crazy.

The Farmer's Almanac does forecast a very cold winter, but I haven't seen the Old Farmer's Almanac yet....and the NWS forecasts an El Nino, so that should mean a lot of rain beginning around December.

I was cold enough at 60...not ready for 40-something, so y'all keep that cold stuff up there!

OK Dawn - You've finally done it. I must try Tess Land Race tomato. I don't suppose I could just grow it along a chain link fence and just make it grow sideways instead of up???? Where did you order the seed?

I want to grow a good currant type too. I ordered one from Park's seed this year and planted 3 plants out along the hogwire garden fence. To be fair it was unimproved soil as I'd never put anything there before. But I mulched with compost, and then feedsacks and grass clippings. The problem I had with them is that the tomatoes had to be really really ripe to have any flavor and then the skins were very tough. I also lost a lot of the maters to rot when the rain split the skins. Then two of the plants--the biggest most productive ones, just gave up and died and the smallest one--shaded by the elderberry bush all morning--is the only one left. I ate several and the granddaughters thought they were neat, being so small, but I got zilch to dehydrate. Next year will surely be better, of course.
