Help! The deer have devastated my garden, so I began growing herbs and vegetables in pots on my second floor deck. There are swarms of these horrible little iridescent flying things flying around the pots. I notice that they're making little holes in the surface of the soil and either laying eggs in them, or living in them. When I turn the soil in preparation for planting, they swarm all over it and fly around excitedly. There are great clouds of them in the air around the pots. Is there an organic solution to this problem? Do I just throw out the potting soil and start over again? Treat the soil with something? Spray them all to death? (I tried that last year and they're back in full force again this year). My husband thinks we should soak the soil with soapy water. Is this safe? What do you think they are? Thanks for any advice you can give me.
