I always enjoyed pushing the growing limits for many tropical and semi tropical plants and trees.

The newest addition is the coconut tree which will be grown in a container as is many of my plants and trees.

This coconut is said to be friendly at about 7 feet maximum growing in containers. The nut is small in comparison to many store bought. The name is unknown.

My container planting method, is 1 part sand 6 parts coconut husk chips using a 4 gallon black container, that provides good drainage.

I guess the bottom line is your never going to know the limits if you never try.

It doesnt hurt to try and imagine growing a coconut palm in a zone 4! Its important to keep it moist but in good draining soil so its not in standing water. Also keep it warm and in sun. Your nights are probably pretty cool even in the summer so that will slow the growth down but as long as the days are mild it should be okay. Once night temps are in the low to mid 40s its time to bring it in (especially once you get close to the 30s) and if it warms up again you can bring it out. When indoors keep it away from a heater but in a warm area by a bright window if possible. Dont keep it too moist indoors to keep it from roting. When they go outside again for the year slowly introduce it to the sun so it doesnt burn.

I agree with alex,,except I would never let it see low 40's,,,why chance it,,,low 50's yes,,,

I'm eating Gingergold apple. I like it better than Gala and it's 2-3 wks earlier. Needs picking just as it turns yellow. Nice sweet tart balance and pretty sweet. Also big fruit. Down here with lack of chilling it finished blooming about July 4th. Dozens of flower clusters in July and now eating the first bloom apples. Pretty amazing.

There are microclimates in a yard, places where there's that bit of shelter that can grow a more tender plant. If you're in or near a city, you might be a few degrees warmer. You need to think about the plants aversion to wetness in winter. Often it's winter wet that's the killer. You just have to try things out, see what works. For example, against a house or other wall, especially if on the south side is often warm enough to support a zone-more-tender plant. A bushel of leaves around the crown will also help. Sometimes if you take extra trouble-- eg wrapping the plant, or building a wire structure around it to fill with leaves for insulation. However, you can make it thru one winter and lose it the next. My own preference is to stick to hardy plants. Trying to force a plant to live in conditions that aren't favorable is just a lot of work and frustration. There are a lot of beautiful hummingbird plants hardy in zone 6. Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Pushing the Palm limits in Jacksonville with my Foxtail Palm!!

I know that this is very old, but that's not a Foxtail palm, nor a Queen palm. That's actually a Florida Royal palm. Both are very beautiful trees, however, the Foxtail palm has fronds that resembles the tail of a fox. Just out of curiosity, did the palm survive? i live in Houston, Tx, which is zone 9a like Jacksonville, and my Foxtail died during the arctic blast back in 2014. However, my Royal is still alive and recovering. Here's a pic of my Foxtail before it froze. I replaced it with a Queen, but I miss my Foxtail very deeply. I can't bare planting another one and having it die on me in a few years, whenever an unusual arctic blast occurs.

Hi, I haven't been posting lately, but I live in Central Texas. I have been growing hostas for about ten years. Dancing in the Rain was one of the first ones I tried to grow. It didn't make it, but I have had good luck with American Sweetheart. It is one of the first ones up, it holds its center, and it grows well. I wish it had a little bit thicker leaves so the snails and slugs didn't chew it, but I really like it. Night before Christmas grows well, too but it darkens in the center some in the heat. This is AS surrounded by NBC.
