Central Florida is not Tampa, etc.
Comments (4)Even *inside* the bay area, things vary dramatically. My house, near the bay in St. Pete is typically 10 degrees warmer on cold mornings than South Tampa near the bay. And South Tampa will be warmer than more inland areas like Brandon. As a result there is a dramatic difference in what things you'll see growing. Plenty of mangos, jacaranda, royal poinciana, etc. in St Pete but you'll find none of those once you get across the bridge and inland just a bit....See MorePushing the Limits of Apples in Central Florida
Comments (91)"Amazing garden Juan, looks really awesome." I am glad you like it Linval. Sadly I have a feeling the citrus trees will eventually succumb to the yellow dragon disease. You can see one of the tangelos is kind of struggling. In one of incredible ironies I have found it easier to grow apples in Central Florida rather than citrus. All you need to do is make sure the apple tree is grafted onto M-111 root stock and that it can tolerate the high heat in your USDA zone. As it turns out most apples don't really require a whole lot of chill hours and many can adapt to our climate. I have found the varieties that were developed in Australia and New Zealand to be good choices for us here because they can tolerate the heat. Apart from fireblight which is always a concern for any tree on the rose family you also have to worry about fungus and diseases because of our humidity. So picking a russetted apple that is resistant to fungal diseases and scab is a good choice. The Arkansas Black and King David apple trees derived from it supposedly generate their own natural waxy coating that protects the apples from fungal diseases. Cheers....See MorePushing the palm limits in Jacksonville FL
Comments (16)I live in northwest St. Johns county too. I am at WGV and the coldest my house has seen is 32 last wednesday morning; it was so unexpected. We have had four frost has well. My Spindle Palm has no damage. My Coconut Palms fronds have some yellow spots on them. My Castor Bean is okay too, some leaves turned brown and crisy with the 32 degrees last week, we had very heavy frost. Today we had some nice rain with wind and thunder. I was worried about my Christmas decorations. First time I have ever had to worry about storms destroying my Christmas decor outside. Yesterday was also my first time putting out Christmas decor while sweating, lol. Upper 70's is wierd since normally in KY it has already cooled down. Comments (6)mjjones453, I am in Lakeland. You are about 45 minutes to an hour south of me. I just left them in the pots and let them go down on their own. This winter, if one of them does not go down, like my Guacamole, I am considering storing them in a mini fridge. This will be my next trial. Hope this information helps. There is a lot of information for growing Hostas in pots on this forum. I read and read until I finally bit the bullet last year. Trust me, they will enable you on this site....See Morebkay2000
