Roebellini with rotting hole in trunk- HELP!!

My roebi has a rotting hole in the trunk. I noticed it was soft, so I cut the boots off and found a black hole in the trunk. I already sprayed it with hydrogen peroxide, but is there anything else I can do to save it?

well i heard you can put fertilizer in holes on some trees.

I know Brandon-for those of us who have been engaged in this subject, A. Shigo is hardly news. And too, like you, I don't 100% agree with everything he said. What he represents to me at this point is the starting point for beginning to learn about tree care that is based on tree biology, not what Elmer across the street said! +oM ps......The tree wound in question tells a complete tale as to why decay was able to advance. Note the shape of the pruning wound-pointed on the bottom. That's where the weight of the limb caused the bark and some cambium to be torn off because the person who made the cut didn't know or care to do it properly. At this point, the tree's natural defenses were compromised and decay was inevitable. I know you know all this Brandon. Maybe, just maybe, someone who is still clinging to long outmoded ideas will take note. Maybe not!

My end vote is the same as the other guys. If it is near your house or a car you like start getting estimates for removal. If it is on the back 40 I would LOVE to experiment in that tree with some sealers like you are thinking. IMO all the structural wood inside that big tree is just like a big cottonwood 4x4 and if I want a 4x4 to last outside on my deck I darned well better treat it. Now you do have to clean it and dry it previous to treating it. Also lord knows what is best to use. I'd stoo coating whatever well short of the live outer layers of the tree. Even though my neighbor's silver maple obviously is none the worse for encapsulating that metal fence post no need to temp fate by letting the live layers of the tree contact a chemical. If large parts of the canopy did not sprout this year that is all for experimentation though. I just can't see the vascular portion of the tree recovering even if you somehow stop the rot.

Thanks Jayinflorida! That is exactly why I was asking for a pic from the original poster. I have seen many Sabal Palmetto with fairly extensive trunk damage and they were looking as fine and healthy as ever. I think that has alot to do how they differ from deciduous trees in terms of how they grow in terms of their trunk structure, IE (xylem, phloem, and cambium, etc.) The main difference between most palms (monocots) and deciduous trees / conifers (dicots) is that the trunks of the deciduous trees/ conifers (dicots) has most of its active growth / fluid/sugar/nutrient/water/sap transport (xylem, phloem, cambium...etc) just below the bark. Palms have that system / structure built throughout the entire trunk. This is why we can see growth "RINGS" on deciduous / coniferous trees, and not on palms. Another major difference between the two is that an injury on a deciduous/ conifer (dicot) is almost always "healed", where as an injury on most palm (monocot) trunks is almost always permanent. Anyway, Rotting usually infers an active infectious area, IE something that is happening currently / is on going. That is why I wanted to see photos. Damage, while not "healed" by the palm, is permanent, but usually is from something in its past that is no longer occurring. Anyway... just thought I would add my .02 Btw.. that last pic is fantastic! I LOVE those giant old Sabals, especially when they develop that very casual "lean". They just look so majestic and graceful!

Hi, Danielle. Neat pot! Why Petrie? The first thing I thought of was a Petri dish. Some people get confused about the difference between repotting and potting up or just changing pots. Unless you live in the southern hemisphere, now isn't a good time to repot, the reason being that repotting includes root pruning and a change of soil, and doing it now will significantly stress the plant and leave it much weaker than it is now. With winter just around the corner, that wouldn't be advisable. If your pot doesn't have a drain hole, you should temporarily remove the plant and drill one, or change pots. If you need direction on how to drill the hole, I can help with that - not a big deal. After the hole is drilled, you simply let it drain at the sink & then set it on/in a collection saucer. If repotting IS in the plan you have for the plant, the best time to do that is very late spring - like around Father's Day. If you live in the deep south, a week or two earlier wouldn't be unreasonable. I would remove the dead plant. Reason: eventually all the trunks are going to fuse together via a process called inosculation. The dead trunk will force the living trunks to grow around it, which will interfere with the fusing process AND make for some unsightly lumps and bumps. You need a drain hole in the pot for 2 reasons. 1) to allow some of the excess water that is limiting your plant's root function to drain from the pot. A healthy plant isn't possible w/o a healthy root system. 2) So when you water, you're flushing the salts from tap water and fertilizer solutions from the pot. This is important because high salt levels create conditions that limit growth, health, and appearance, all occurring as a result of the plant's reduced ability to absorb water. If you think about how curing salt literally PULLS water from the cells of meat during the curing process, you are envisioning what an excess of salt(s) does to the cells of plants. If you like the rocks on top, there is no reason you can't keep them. They do slow evaporative water loss a little, but there are ways to make the excess water leave the pot w/o you having to nix the rocks. We can talk more about that if you like. Really need help. Have had the palm for 4 yrs and it has almost 2 feet of trunk.

I'm not sure what can be done, but if you don't get some help from here go to the palmtalk forum, sign up and post your question there. International Palm Society experts and nursery men belong to that forum and you will get some help. Good luck with it. IMO,avoid any ferts in the hole for the time being.

Thanks Donray I'll give it a try. I did only pay $20 for it, but I've had it 4 years, and its more sentimental than anything else. Its also a really beautiful palm when its healthy.

Hi Donray, I think I may have stopped the rotting by removing the rotten boots and spraying peroxide in the hole, but I still don't know if its gonna make it, and I have no idea what caused it.

If you could post there on my behalf that would be great. I'd really appreciate it.

Hi Topher. Yeah, it was anyway. Its pretty firm now because I cut most of the mushy black rotted stuff away and sprayed it, but I don't know if its gonna start to rot again. Also, its growing a lot slower than it used to in previous summers, although it is still growing.

Thanks Donray. No there weren't any insects or worms, just black mushy boots and fibers. The crown just started to grow slowly this past week (not sure why it took so long for it to start growing). We had temps in the mid 90s earlier in June, but it did nothing up until this point.
