? on potted roebis for northern growers

I know that roebis are pretty slow but I was wondering if any northern growers that have potted roebis have kept track of how many fronds you can get to push out from the time you put them out (both of mine have been out since the 2nd weekend in May) until you brought them back in (usually mid october for me. I have a double roebi with about 6 inches of trunk and about two feet tall. It looked pretty ruff when I got it last fall but it has really greened up this spring. Not a lot of noticeable growth though. Of course i can see that there's been some. Any southern growers who have an idea feel free to chime in.

I've had mine out since late April and they are finishing up their 2nd bright green frond with new spears clearly visible, don't know about trunk increase but I would imagine not much

Andy, i bought a double trunked w/ about one trunk about a foot and the other about half that back at the end of april (last week actually). It has been outside ever since in full sun with the pot buried in the ground. At first it browned some obviously from the shock/sunburn but now it has really greened up and the bigger trunk has put out 2 full fronds and is working on its third. The smaller trunk has only opened 1 full frond and the second has opened. I am reall surprised at the way this one has grown. ........Now for as my 8 foot roeby......Well it has made a GREAT comback!! Over the last two weeks it has stopped browning, and turning back to a nice green color and in fact opened up a new frond last week! I will take some updated pics in the next day or so.

One of my favorites for summer tropical look is the Bordelon. It has really nice red blotched leaves, with a deep burgundy underside which looks great blowing in the wind. As a plus, it's the fastest growing, most prolific pupper I've ever seen. It will carry through winter in my 45-50 degree greenhouse with hardly any change to it's leaves overwinter. My three footers are now 12 feet tall that I potted up this spring. By the way-- Did you know you can get a bordelon banana plant with a 7 foot trunk in a Ford Cougar without breaking the leaves, provided the driver is the only person in the car? I just found that out with a Bordelon, a few minutes ago...So they're pretty flexible too!

Perhaps a bit off the topic, but having lost a very large by indoor standards Livistona chinensis, I had for many years, it comes to mind that any palm in a potting mix that's perhaps 90% organic compost and peat , seems to develope those many air pockets over time as all that organic stuff is used up by bacteria etc. and in my case perhaps tons of sow bugs in the rootball perhaps? I don't see the same thing occuring naturally in specimens in the ground where they're hardy most likely, and perhaps it's the different nature of the soil, which doesn't allow for those air pockets to develope over many years of the palms life? Mostly sand or inorganic and more permanent materials perhaps? I'd guess in that case a mix with a much greater proportion of grit etc. which doesn't beak down if a better longer lasting planting medium. As for trying to correct that problem , I never did succeed and it's a bit more difficult I found in the case of a bigger rootball perhaps. I did find after the plant died and I'd removed the old dead rootball, that of course there were many many feet of winding roots at the bottom of the rootball, and wonder if I'd cut those off as for other types of potted plants, if the roots would have survived and put on lots of newer and healthier feeder rootlets?? I have always thought that most palms are very sensitive to much heavy root pruning , but perhaps it does depend on the variety. Just a few thoughts. I did manage to kill my Phoenix after it struggling for quite a few years , with less than ideal indoor light nine months of the year. I'd guess the rather elongated and lanky fronds would be an indication for that light problem? Perhaps I'm mistaken as well, and it's not only container grown plams that suffer the "soil loss" problem and even some in the ground may get the same problem?

He tested some Needle Palms in a cold frame this winter and they came through with flying colors!!! No heat at all, except what the sun could do during a sunny day... sunny day? oh yeah, we didn't have many this winter! LOL :) The Needle Palms and T. Fortuneis I've shown here are all from Broadway Gardens as is the newest members of the family, a Bismarkia and a Spindle Palm. Great place, I do highly recommend it. p.s. he also has some amazing Yucca Rostratas, but a bit out of my price range! ):O

spataro51 I used what's called Baseboard Thermostat. You can find them at Homedepot and Walmart. Very common. The difference between one of these types and a low voltage type, is that the baseboard thermostat is designed for the high current that a baseboard heater requires. It will handle 15 amps without a problem. Here's a picture of how I connect it up to a wall plug. All mounted on a stick. DISCLAIMER: THIS IS FOR DEMO PURPOSES ONLY. IF YOU ATTEMPT THIS ON YOUR OWN, DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK. ALSO, PLEASE HAVE A BIT OF ELECTRICAL BACKGROUND BEFORE ATTEMPTING AS YOU COULD CAUSE A FIRE IF NOT CONNECTED CORRECTLY. PLEASE NOTE. Do NOT use any kind of Extention cord to make this. Use only actual House wire and heavy duty, 3-prongled plug. Plug only into an outlet with nothing else in the line. Also, for such a small structure, I had the blow dryer set to its lowest heat setting. On this dryer, this consumed only 400Watts of power (approx.) In this picture, you can see the blow dryer and the thermostat on a stick. Below (out of view) the thermostat, on the same stick, is another box with a wall plug in it.

Great to hear, My little double one is pushing up several new fronds none of which has fully opened. I'm sure a lot of the growth is being focussed on the roots. This thing looked like crap last October. I cut off all of the old dead fronds and placed in my living room window. It got a few hours of morning sun for 6 months so when I stuck it outside it had little to no leaf burn.

Andy, mine added on about 6 to 9 inches of overall growth since I brought it in the house last fall, as well as a few inches of trunk height, right now it has about a foot and a half of trunk. Now it's outside, but I find they grow fast if given full sun and water daily. Mine defoliated in the garage two winters ago, but came back with a full crown of fronds the following summer, probably about 12 or more. I figure you should be able to get at least 9 fronds by the end of the summer. Just remember full sun like with any phoenix.

Both of mine are getting full sun. From about 10:00 until 7:00 pm. It does make a big diffirence.

I have come to have a new appreciation for Roebis. They grow slower but when taken care of properly they look excellent. I'd have two more really nice ones if I new 4 years ago what I know now.
