Young Oleander Blooming??? Butia Palms recovering.

Some of you may recall Laura sent me some 5" Oleander seedlings. In all this heat, my microclimate & good watering one sent up a bud. Can the olenader bloom so young or will it fall off? Its about 18-20 inches high.

My butia that over wintered was stuck, so I did what jim did (surgery), but first I dug it up and tossed her in a large pot expecting it would die. I cut the bud far down to the browning frond but not below the apex it needs to grow. Well, she started growing back. So now I planted my butia yatay as a replacement in the ground and she's taking off.

Oleanders can definitely bloom at that height! Im looking forward to seeing some bloom pics soon! My oleanders are all starting to bloom now. The one that stayed outside actually is blooming earlier than the one I kept inside!
Glad to hear that your butia is recovering! My 3 year old butia just doesnt grow. I would get rid of it if it didnt fill up the spot its in so well. I did plant another butia in more sun so maybe that one will grow better!

Chills, I am with Fori. Don't get rid of your oleander, or brugmansia, or tomato, or rhubard, or any of the other wonderful plants. What you need to do is TEACH your children and their friends what they can and cannot touch. They need to LEARN how to RESPECT nature. I have been a teacher for 32+ years, and a very successful one at that with copious awards to verify the same. When it comes to child rearing, I am a firm believer that one "house proofs" the child as opposed to "child proofs" the house. One must be diligent and aware, but the child must learn to respect his environment. Our own child would be a prime example of the fact that this works. Yes, it does take effort on the parents' part, but in the long run, the amount of effort expended is probably less that the effort expended by those who want to go overboard with protection. Enjoy your oleander. I know that I do. I also know that I will teach my grandchildren to respect them as well. Enough said. I'm over and out.

neonrider,I didn't know what to think when I saw this old post again.As you probably read it got pretty heated on this post about a little palm.I look back on it and cant help but laugh.As far as where to get a butia yatay,there are a few growers in Florida and one in California that I know of that might could help you.Check on ebay first,sometimes they have them as small plants for sale.Brother Earth Nursery is a seller on ebay that might have one.I know a couple growers in Florida that might have them,but I would have to check with them first.There kinda hard to find because there not as cold hardy as a B.capitata,and there not as common in the trade also.Let me know if you cant find one on ebay and I'll see if I can find one for you.Good luck :)

As tropicalzone7 said, Butias vary quite a bit in color and form. The bluish ones are my favorite. I'm glad to hear that you are interested in Sabals, because they are some of my favorite palms. They are painfully slow-growing in their first 5-8 years, but for your patience, they will reward you with unique foliage and toughness that's difficult to get in other palms. I would actually recommend the Louisiana variety of Sabal minor because it's faster growing and has beautiful color. The ones you saw with brown tips may not have been grown under the right conditions. Sabal uresana has turquoise foliage, and is listed as a cold zone 8 or even zone 7b according to some sources, but is hard to find. If you can get a 'Birmingham' Sabal, it would certainly be a worry-free long-term plant for you. I'd just dig a huge hole for it in a sunny spot and mix in lots of perlite and organics. Sabals don't have big nutrient demands (they do like Calcium though), but they have extensive root systems so any barriers to root growth, like compacted clay, will slow them down. The trunked Sabals they dig and ship out of FL are a decent value, and may be a good option, but they aren't too quick to recover from cold damage. The 'Brazoria' Sabal I think tropicalzone7 was talking about is a pretty one too, but I haven't seen proof of it being much hardier than Sabal palmetto. I'd definitely try it though.

njoasis, Good observation, I notice they have grown huge compared to the small one gallon size they were in the early Spring. They are equivelant to the $300 size you see on the chilly palm tree site. I found them knocked over and neglected in a Lowes and the manager gave me two of them discounted for $3 each. They were bought in Florida when I drove down last year and we drove them back up. Believe or not I felt God told me NOT to buy the bigger expensive palms that I wanted and to buy the small ones. I had no idea these would grow so fast. Butiaman (Randy) told which butias they were - Yatays. I was not sure but the tag was clear; that they were butias and grow the edible fruit. I like to grow plants that friut and palms - so you can imagine these being cold hardy were on the top of my list. I winter them in the cool to warm greenhouse (pictured above)where they do add to their trunk width at the base during the winter in that environment. This may set them up for strong leaf growth when it gets warmer. I fertilize in the Spring and summer only. I notice they like clay pots; it may be the aeration. Hey Randy, We broke a record high here yesterday of 67* and today may reach 66*. I am not surprised you are in the 70s. That is whats great about living in the deep south - quick warm-ups. The tropical air is close by and gets pulled up even in the winters by strong pressure systems. Thanks for to encouragement.

Hi Alex, I have to post some pics soon. I am surprised the oleander has a bud. Its tiny now. Did you leave your oleander in the ground? The garden is bursting with all this heat and my watering. Its 96* currently. The bougenvilla I brought back from florida is putting on a show in all this heat.

Hi greg, yest I did leave my oleander in the ground. I protected it the same way I protected all my palms and it had no damage! It opened up even more flowers today!

I think I may try that one year. Good tip, never thought oleander could survived sheltered in zone 7a. It makes sense though because they are pretty cold hardy up to VB.

Hi Greg. I took a pic of my oleander in bloom. Here it is!

Here it is coming out of the winter. It was a little too big for its protection so it got a bit bent up, but it grew out of it very quickly! I really love the look of oleanders because they look good in dry climates, and wet climates too!

Post some pics of your oleander when it blooms! I think you should really try some oleanders in the ground. Mine isnt a cold hardy cultivator, but some of the most cold hardy might not need any protection (but some of them bloom less).

Brooklyngreg, I've seen oleander winter over unprotected in gardens in Rehoboth Beach for years.

Hi Laura,

It is coming along, progress slowed a bit because we switched from summer heat to a cool 68 the last 2-3 days. I can see the pink emerging! Interesting, it is sending up a single bud for its first flower.

Hi Alex, thanks for the photo:)... your oleander is stunning - I love it too - its so warm weather looking. When mine blooms I'll get my camera ready:) Pink to red are the best colors. Is there a yellow?

Thanks Greg. There is a yellow oleander (possibly several). The one I know of is hardy Double Yellow. Apparently it isnt a fantastic bloomer and itc cold tolerance could be better.
I also love pink and red oleanders. They really look nice! I like white too and I just got one so I now have all of my favorite oleanders in my yard!

Hi Alex,

They must look great. When the yellow blooms post a shot. I tried white and it just got lost in the array of black and white in the city. I found the red-pinks stand out in this location better. I have limited space to work with:)
