I just received my Bhut Jolokia seeds I oredered from PepperJoe , and this is my plan on growing them

I am planning on sprouting them in 9oz clear plastic cups with Miracle Grow seed starting soil, all of this housed in a plastic seed tray with a lid and heating pad underneath. Once they sprout I'll be putting them on a room that gets around 8-10 hours of sunlight a day. When i see the roots reaching the bottom and sides of the cup I'll be moving them to bigger cups (probably 16oz) and ill repeat this last step before moving to the 3 gallon tubs. I will be hardening the plants for about 2 weeks before moving outside.

For fertilizer I'll be using Neptunes Harvest fish and seaweed fert, I'll be doing a foliage spray every other week and spraying with epsom salt in between.

Soil for 3 gallon tubs:

Composted Manure

Potting soil

Sand

I really don't know what ratios to mix the soil at, or if its a good mix.

If you guys see any flaws in my plan or have any recommendations please let me know.

Hi srqpepper, I grew the Bhut Jolokia last year and from the harvest dried out a few of my pods for seeds. I used potting soil and Alaska fish fert and watered at times using Epsom salt. Only thing on your list that I would stay away from is the sand, not too good for the roots. Any reason you have the sand on the list to your soil blend? Just wondering.

Only thing I am changing is using an orchid mix for seed germination, I used potting soil, peat pellets, and orchid mix and the results better germination from the orchid mix and stronger seedlings.

When I repot I will use a 1/2 and 1/2 mix of potting soil and the orchid mix.

Agreed, sand is right out!

That mix will hold a LOT of moisture.

The Orchid Mix incorporates a good amount of bark, as well as perlite (usually), and sometimes
pumice/scoria even. These larger particles help keep the soil open for excellent drainage and
gas exchange.

This thread has come a long way ; The year was 2008. Bruce (esox07) and edymnion are two of the three familiar names to me. I, myself, was not then growing anything with more heat than Habanero. The topic ( Bhut best growing conditions ) has covered just about any issue about growing chili peppers, from seeds source, germination, growing under lights, potting soil,.. ..you name it. Bhut Jolokia is on my grow list in the future. Most people who have grown it , have described it as one of the tastiest super hots. Good reading stuff here. Seysonn

I am currently growing Bhut's in Phoenix, with no problem. The polination rate wasnt amazing on mine, but decent. First wave of flowers I got 5 peppers per plant. Now on the second wave, Im getting around 7 per plant. I agree that the misting could be the problem. Ive never misted once other than fighting pests. My Bhut's were grown hydroponically, but that shouldnt matter. I work at a local hydroponic store, Sea of Green. Im growing 3 very large Bhuts indoors in rockwool blocks and slabs. Its been battle growing them and setting the fruit over the past 4 months, but its been fun. You should come see the setup.

Looks good, I am also growing Bhuts and Black Pearl (both for the first time) and orange habs. Not hydroponic though. My black pearls right now are smaller than yours but they're already showing dark purple foliage (only the new growth is green). I harvested the BP seeds from some plants I found growing at a city park last year...I thought they tasted good (hope they weren't sprayed too much! lol) so I saved some and then ID'ed the peppers using Google and this forum.

Hmm the greenhouse was like ~$430 (was originally $600 on sale for $500 and then a friend knocked another $70 off the price for me) Got the buckets from lowes for about $3 a piece 10buckets. PVC pipe was $12. 25 Grommets were like $14. Bucket lids were $22. pump was like $15 but i got it for free from a friend. Air pump was around $25 but was a gift. Bark mulch was $20. Hydroton was like $10-20 since I already had most of it. Ive spent around $40-$50 on plants/seeds $17 on a Ph up and down kit going to be buying new nutes for $21 I also have a 4bulb HO t5 grow light (200watts) that was $100 That I will be putting out in the greenhouse after my seedlings are done. Not counting the light its probly around $700 ish? @habjolokia ill probly be emailing you sometime in the next week if I buy anymore. ive still got a ton of stuff to do before its all %100 up and running. pretty much just the small qwerks to work out now. TO ANYONE WANTING TO BUILD A SYSTEM LIKE THIS MAKE SURE YOU GET GOOD SEALS/GROMETS AND EXPECT THERE TO BE LEAKS YOU WILL HAVE TO FIX. I had 3 of my gromets/seals go bad and had to silicone them to get them to seal properly.

thanks for the input guys, i actually thought that sand would help with drainage. any comments on the correct ratio of soil/compost/orchid mix?

I wanted to use the compost and soil mixture for core nutrients, since the seaweed/fish emulsion is not too rich in potassium , i wanted to use the compost to augment the potassium for root strength.

Just a heads up. You could start them outside ( i just germinated some outside) since you live in south Florida. They will be much stronger if you plan on growing them outdoors. Set them where they get lots of sun til they pop up and then move them in a shade spot for a few weeks til they get some legs.

Hi srqpepper,

There may be a ratio person out there who can answer your question, as for me not too big into a ratio driven mix, kinda like how I cook a bit of this and a bit of that and some of that looks good :-) only time I make sure I get the ratio right is when I am adding ferts when watering.

In my post above I am going with 50% organic potting soil and 50% orchid mix.

Must be Awesome to be in FL with being able to start outdoors already, I prefer the sun over grow lights any day, but they will do for my Bhuts or else I would never be able to harvest.

One other thing about your setup is the use of the heating pad. I went out and spent a bunch of money on this "Professional Greenhouse" and with the dome in place and the heating mat on your seeds will "cook". None of my seeds germinated using this method.
