Moles!! Moles!!
Comments (22)Since this January, moles appear to have taken over our yard. There are dozens if not hundreds of holes from top to bottom, except over the septic field. One of my dogs has gone after a few of them and created even bigger holes. My main concern is destruction of the soil and the possibility that one of my dogs may injure themselves by stepping into a hole. Also, with a history of ankle sprains, I'm not that comfortable walking through my yard for fear of another sprain. I've ordered some of the Victor traps online. My questions are 1) which holes to start with? and 2) how do you begin to repair the damage from the holes? Thanks, Jay...See Moremole in yard wreaking havoc
Comments (5)All the remedies that involve plants, chemicals, etc to "run them off" or send them packing do not work. Sorry. They will be back if they ever left at all. I have tried everything. The only thing that works is the old fashioned mole trap you put over their run that stabs them as they pass under it. Try one, it works. Dead moles don't come back. Also they eat more than just grubs....See Morecrabgrass
Comments (2)Are you sure it's actual "crabgass" and not Bermuda Grass? If so, the do make some sprays for grassy weeds, but not much will control Bermuda. The best you can hope for is to yank it out and get as much of the root as you possibly can. Even very, teeny, tiny small pieces of root will grow anew....AND...keep at it for a couple of years. Those roots go to China and 1/2 way round the world. Corn Gluten is a PRE-emergent which provides a barrier that doesn't allow seeds to sprout, but does nothing against rootstock or plants already growing. wanda...See MoreHow do You Know if You Have Moles in the Yard?
Comments (9)Grubs (in the lawn) are the icky and damaging larvae of beetles. A large population can result in serious problems with your lawn. Moles just happen to LOVE grubs! Put on your stomping shoes and keep the tunnels packed down. That way, you can keep an eye out on any new activity. Plus, you don't want your grass's roots to be left high and dry in those tunnels. I have a high tolerance for moles but many people don't. But I don't worship my lawn, either, lol. Attached is an image of a couple typical beetle grubs. If you live in a part of the country plagued by Japanese Beetles, you have 'em. Other pesty grubs would be from any of the other chafer beetles like the May or June beetle. Typically, at this time of year, grubs are overwintering several inches into the soil, but will come up to feed on grass roots in the spring.
