AeroGrow To Sprout The Hot Pepper???

I cant believe that I didnt ask this in my first posting.

Has anyone tried to sprout the Bhut Jolokia seeds in an AeroGrow unit? I have 2 full size units that I have grown tomatos, petunias, marigolds, portulacas, and now jalapenos in them.

BUT will the Bhut Jolokia seed sprout in this wet of an enviroment? Or is it to wet? It has the VERY bright light,...sterile seed sprouting material, perfect fertilizer levels. The jalapenos sprouted easily, but since I have no experience with this super hot pepper. I am assuming it needs a drier enviroment to at least sprout.

Once they are up and growing,I can get them outside into the hot sun and heat of south Fla. But has anyone tried this way to sprout this pepper,or any other super hot pepper seed?

You might E-Mail Pepper Rancher,he uses an aerogrow unit to grow some of his Peppers.
I think his SASBE offered seeds are from plants grown in his aerogarden.

Ok, I did a reasonably thorough Google site search of the Hot Pepper Forum as suggested, and really only found what has been stated by TAMU and spiced_ham. Heat (capsaicinoids) cannot be produced anywhere in the current generation pepper, and particularly not in the seeds, by the cross pollinator. Virtually all other references to the contrary were categorized as 'old wives tales'. I found none that supported the 'tale' when told, though that doesn't necessarily mean they don't exist since I didn't search past 18 pages of results. You may have been 'well watering' them a little too much. Overwatering is a common cause of seedling death. Transferring to larger pots may make it worse...more soil...more moisture. Are they inside? Is the sunlight coming through the window? Direct light through glass can be too hot for young plants. I agree we need a little more info to figure it out.

I am sure others will give their opinions, Once they sprout they no longer need to be in a covered dome.....+1 I suggest repotting them and burying them deeper...... +1 bury them up to just shy of the seed leaves. ................+1 I would remove the netting.................................................+1 or completely remove them from the peat .... -1 May cause un-needed stress Then keep the light very close to them. .................................+1 and I have to keep it inches away from the tops of the plant. ..+1 The only thing I'd add is 16hrs.on/8hrs. off on the lights and a small fan lightly blowing on seedlings so they "wave" not "bend over". With lights this close monitor seedlings closely for wilting, raise lights slightly if media is wet or water if media dry.

Sorry, been busy with Christmas. I just kept searching the internet for blogs of many different people, putting in keywords, like aerogarden, (couldn't find as much as I thought I would) african violets in aerogardens, etc. Alot of them started growing them and posted pictures, but didn't follow through and tell you how it was going a few months later or whatever. Most just said the leaves failed. One lady's husband built her a homemade one, big flat of growing spaces with holes, water underneath, pumps, aeration, LED grow lights panel, etc. She didn't report alot of success either. I can't remember the blogger now, and she dwindled off and stopped writing too. I seem to remember she mainly went with other plants. I think my biggest worry, I guess, is there isn't much space. I want to grow more than a few leaves. Lol. But we can start out small and see how it goes. Please let me know how it goes for you. In theory, it should be so much quicker, no waiting forever for those little mouse ears. Ha! I think, if you cut the grow sponge like you said, then even score it some for roots to be able to break out the sides easier might help. I was thinking you'd have to plant it about the time the plantlets start showing so they get light, but they grow under water if started in a glass, but they do get light. Quite a dilemma to think about, as you said the light is the main factor in their growing so quickly. The Aerogrow tries to keep that light away from the water to keep algae down, so it sure won't reach the plantlets Hmmmm...

Are we talking about the aerogarden (is that the same as aerogrow)?

It sprouts peppers like there is no tomorrow. They also sell a tray specifically for seed starting (and then transplanting to somewhere else) that fits into the units. Its has 70 slots for seedlings. Its called "Garden Starter Tray" I am thinking about purchasing one for next year...

Hi Pepper Rancher. I emailed you. Yes the AeroGrow is the same as the AeroGarden. I didnt look here first for your reply. So I CAN germinate them in the unit, in the foam sponge, that the seed kits have. I ordered a '1 season Master Kit', to grow my own seeds...it is a smaller package than the standard 'Master Kit',much less expensive to. I think they send you enough growplugs and fertilizer for an entire year in the BIG Master Kit,or 2 full 'crops' of your choice.
So I assume I am getting just 7 growplugs,not 14...which would be for 1 'crop' of my choice. I am going to try some of my pepper seeds that I am anxiously waiting to get, to see if I can get them to germinate,...and some flower seeds to KEEP in the garden inside. I think the pepper needs the outside sun and heat to make the peppers HOT!

I always hear about how peppers need to be dry and in hot weather to make them spicy-hot, but Im not sure how true this is. I immagine it has more to do with the macro and micro nutrients provided to the plant. The reason I mention this is my lemon drops were grown indoors at comfortable "air-conditioned" tempratures, in hydroponic nutrient (which is almost all water) and my lemon drops are plenty hot. The amount of light will affect the size of the pods though. My first harvest had huge peppers (the plants were smaller and still fit under the light hood pretty well. They are also supplimented by sunlight through the window. Each harvest after that as the plants got bigger and sticking out from under the hood (no longer getting direct light, the pods were smaller. I think they would go back up in size with full sunlight.
Anyway, back on topic here, you can germinate the seeds, and transplant them if you dont want to grow them in your aerogarden completely. Be careful not to damage the fragile plants though, and if you are super careful, you may even be able to reuse the sponge.
