Used Round up..now what?

I had a previous post about an awful grass..pretty sure it is quack, but still waiting on extension office diagnosis..

Their recommendation was round-up..said it's the treatment of choice for these grasses..no matter if it is quack or bermuda

I'm experimenting..1 area I"ve sprayed, covered and watching for creepers from under the barrier, the other area I just used round up..

This area, nothing but weeds, has obviously been effected..some smaller weeds dead..others just yellowed..the grass has yellowed a bit..

Now what..do I pull the dead stuff, leave it..The bottle says I may have to repeat spraying in 7 days and on the grasses I will..but what do I do with the already dead stuff..just leave it? Also, one of the smallest weeds went to seed within 24 hours of spraying..millions of seeds! Are these viable??..The bottle and web site don't give the answer to these questions..Hope someone here can and any other things done if yo've used this product...

I've never used chemicals..so I'm being very careful, using very little, keeping all living things away from spraying area...

well Mary ... whats your plan for the area ???

if i were building a bed.. i would just cover it with 3 to 5 inches of mulch and start planning my garden .... whatever popped through would get resprayed ...

if i were planning on planting grass in the fall .. i would just leave it all to wither and disappear over the summer ...

most seeds need sunlight to sprout.. so the mulch covers [like a pun] that issue ... lol ....

so what the plan ..... for the area ...

PS: brush killing is even worse... like poison ivy .. i had to spray 3 or 4 times per year for 2.5 years to finally beat it ... so just keep at it.. you will win ...

If what you have is quack grass not even Roundup will permanently kill it. The only way to keep it out of any garden is with deep barriers. I use 10 inch Aluminum flashing while Janet Macunovich prefers plastic carpet runner placed vertically between the turf grass and the garden bed.

Hi Gladys - congrats! ;) All the FAQ's here cover most of the basics and I have linked the one on "Now they're up!" below. Be sure to check out all the other FAQ's too for info you'll need later. I find it best to remove the cover at least part of the time so excess moisture doesn't build up inside. It also allows them more light. Once they have true leaves, remove it and leave it off. Boca Joe I respectfully disagree...as soon as there are a few leaves, it is safe to bring them outside even close to freezing temps, but they won't grow as quickly as indoors with warmth. I will agree that steady cold rain for more than a full day might be risky. I've had mine outside for 2 weeks already, and they've already experienced 33-35F several times without any problems, sunburn is the bigger threat, they should be gradually introduced to sunshine. I have about 30 clumps of various species, they are all doing well.

Does it taste good? If it does, I wouldn't mess with it regardless of whether it sets up or not. A flavorful syrup is always better than an overcooked or rubbery jelly. Keep in mind also that a jelly can take as long as six weeks on the shelf to set, so what you're seeing now, not even 24 hours in, is no indication of what you'll be looking at down the road. Carol

Baptisia is generally benign, well-behaved, doesn't spread or hog the garden. In my experience it simply comes up each year, grows quite large, needs a peony ring or other support to keep it from flopping, isn't bothered by pests and provides elegant early-season blooms. Monarda/bee balm is in the mint family. While I made a conscious decision not to grow it, my neighbor has an impressive patch of it in her garden that is full, thick and covered with bees every year. Her husband keeps bees so it stands to reason her plants are heavily visited throughout the growing season. Mints tend to spread, some more aggressively than others. I'd hesitate to expect either to bloom the first year altho' it's certainly possible the bee balm could produce flowers. IMO, the baptisia blooms are well worth the wait. The baptisia might produce fewer blooms its first year than in subsequent growing seasons.

Hi kim and Ken..I did follow up your advice kim on the other post about the grass..and have put in flashing..

Ken..I am not sure what I want to do yet...I guess I"m waiting to see what will regrow and how much more round up I will have to use..

all the weeds will regrow .... you have to do something about bare soil ....
