Today I got a much better look at the leaves. Looking at pictures on the internet I am fairly certain it is Cherry Leaf Spot. Some leaves have it very bad however almost all the leaves have it. There is only one branch that does not have it on the top where new foliage is growing. If I trim this tree everywhere I see the cherry leaf spots there would not be much left of the tree. Should I pull the leaves off that have it the worst. This tree was a replacement I picked up at wal-mart. I had planted two at the end of April that I had purchesed from Loews and they were eaten by deer. One was so badly eaten I replaced it with the wal-mart tree. It was a very nice looking tree so I bought it. Now my sewcond tree is starting to get the disease. I pulled of all the leaves I seen it on. Is there any way to keep these trees in check and will they grow fruit. I am not so much worried about getting my money back for the trees. I would just hate to loose the year and have to start over next. I do not care if I have to use chemicals a couple of years since they will not bare fruit for 4-5 years. How can i get rid of the disease by any means? Thank you for any help

P. serotina: Two adult trees in our yard, several thousand seedlings everywhere. Roughly 99% die in the first year, but that still leaves me with dozens of larger plants that need to be pulled. Fruits disappear before I even see them. Others in our area get heavy infestations of webworms; I wouldn't mind that, so of course mine have none! I'm intending to replace these with trees that are friendly to both wildlife and me!

Felix--if you can't find a Cherry of the Rio Grande this year check out Hopkins Nursery vending site at the annual Leu Gardens plant sale in March if you live close enough to Orlando. Hopkins doesn't sell retail anymore so you have to get it at a plant show or a nursery that sells their plants. They are the only one that I know of that sells them. Christine

I started out just cutting trees that were close to the house, then I expanded it to cutting loblolly field pines that were leaning towards the house and dangerous. Then I expanded it a little more to open up an area where I can put more attractive trees. And while doing THAT I discovered a lot of unhealthy trees that were just hurting the ones that could be better. And I just found today that a lot of my oak trees that I thought were healthy were being completely eaten up on the inside by ants! They cut one down that was right next to my garage, it was more than 36" in diameter but probably 20" of the center was completely eaten away :-O So now I'm having to take down the oak trees that are close to the house, too. As for moving them, I found this that worried me: Black cherry, like many large trees, develops an extensive taproot and therefore cannot be easily transplanted. So I expect that, if I can get them dug up at all, it'll probably kill them :-(
