As Davidinct mentioned the standard ProMix has Mycorise included but you can also order it with Biofungicides for a little extra per bale ($1.45 from my supplier). Both of these additives have research support for reducing pathogen organisms and the biofungicide can even boost production due to the benefit of the root colinizing organisms. These are similar to a whole new line of commercial products like TC-22, Rootshield, etc. Either way this new technology in planting media makes good sense. The opposite, very risky alternative of using any unsterilized material can lead to a complete wipeout of your seedling crop in a few days from soilborn pathogens. I would never,ever attempt to start seeds in soil from the garden. Your time is too valuable to risk the crop loss.

No, seeds starting mix is finer so that roots do not get torn up when you pull seedling apart when separating community flats/pots. It is mostly vermiculite peat moss and a bit of lime/dolomite to adjust pH. Potting mix is coarser and usually contains composted materials such as pine bark and other (originally) woody materials, often with a fluffer such as perlite or styrofoam, and lime/dolomite for pH adjustment. It can be used for starting seeds if you are not planning on pulling the plants out of the mix (I use it for starting everything). Potting soil is often much denser/heavier because it contains actual soil, I have seen it advertized for things that are to be permanently grown outside in containers like shrubs in planters, but someone else might have more info on this than me. Potting mix is usually better for most things than potting soil. For all of them you would have to check the bag to see if they contain starter fertilizer.

ProMix BX has been my choice as a soil-less growing medium for some years now. Good results for seed germination and growing seedlings on in pots until ready for permanent site. (May take a year or so for me to get all my pots planted.) This year I added fine sand to the ProMix to start rock garden plants and alpines. Other normal garden seeds were sown in this mix. Germination results just as good. There is also a growing medium sold by the bale at Home Depot caled BM1. I have used this product when ProMix was not available adding vermiculite and perlite as required because the BM1 has more peat than the ProMix BX bale. The cost of either bales is around $25.00 to $30.00 Canadian. This mix can also be used with potting soil for use in hanging baskets, deck pots, etc. Buying by the compressed bale is practical and cost worthy. Besides selected nurseries I have found ProMix BX at farm Feed & Supply Stores.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Makes sense that they outgrew the pots. Last year they really outgrew them so I started the seeds two weeks later this year. Still too long I guess. It has only been 5 weeks since I planted the seeds. I water them only when they are dried out but that ends up every other day. The peppers next to them go 4 days or so before drying out. Well, after watering and then letting them sit outside for the day the Amish tomato leaves flattened back out and the stems perked up mostly. Everything going in next weekend so hopefully they make it. I hate to plant things out this weekend with the temperatures forecast to drop again this week. Oh, and the soil i am using is Johnny's 512 mix- says it is good for starting, transplanting and container growing.
