Well, I did it again. My big plumeria by the back door was
in need of another major pruning.

Here's what it looked like prior to the cold snap we just had.

After the cold snap, it looked like this.

After pruning, it now looks like this.

Got quite a few cuttings though. Thirty-four to be exact.

WOW! Is this the right time of year for pruning/cuttings...I guess depends on your area...I prune in Ca. in late March...you must be lucky..roxanne

Eric_oh - Nigella in Upstate NY - they bloom for about a month in midsummer (June-July), then form their balloon-shaped seed pods. They reseed freely, and their seedlings form a fuzzy green carpet in the fall, overwinter without trouble, and grow on in the spring. Their foliage and seed pods look scruffy (totally dry) by September, so I pull them out then, and sprinkle the seeds where I want them (or harvest them to share). I have three mixed borders in my yard (suburbia, but a nice little lot bordering a wooded ravine). The widest border (full shade under hemlock trees for half its lenghth) is about 12 feet deep by 75 feet long. The others are both about 9 feet deep by 30 feet long. I wish they could be deeper, but then I'd have no lawn and the kids would have no place to play, LOL - they were unhappy when I took over part of the back yard for an island bed the last two years, so I'll be shrinking that bed this year to give them a little more room. SO, the point of this is that I've had to keep the shrubs in proportion to my smaller mixed border depth. I can only dream of a border that's 30' by 90' - that's almost my entire yard, LOL! In a small yard I have different issues than if I had a large lot. For instance, I can't use a full-sized lilac by the sidewalk (it would block the line of sight down the road from the driveway - a safety issue), so I planted lilac 'Wonderblue,' a "dwarf" that should max out at 6 feet tall. Nice plant, gorgeous flowers. And, my neighbor might not appreciate having a forest planted on the property line, so I have to be respectful of her view, too. Fortunately, she likes looking at my garden, and doesn't mind the border shrubs at all. The backbone of that front border is a mix of five shrubs: a tall lilac nearest the house ('Krasavitsa Moskvy'), which I'm training to be more tree-like and vertical than bushy and spreading; a butterfly bush ('Plum Purple,' dies back most years, stays 4-6 feet tall/wide), rose of sharon 'Blue Bird' (very vertical, self seeds like mad though), philadelphus/mock orange 'Virginal' (again, more vertical than spreading), and then the 'Wonderblue' lilac by the sidewalk. In front of those is a mix of perennials and annuals: peonies, tall bearded and siberian irises, daylilies, white echinacea, a spiny acanthus, pennisetum alopecuroides, culinary sage (makes a nice shrubby, furry texture), chrysanthemum 'Emperor of China,' Stokes asters, plumbago, rose campion, nigella 'Miss Jeckyll Blue,' alyssum, sempervivums, snapdragons, a campanula (from a garden swap - hopefully it will bloom this year; it seems to be a bit invasive and might have to be moved), nicotiana 'Lime Green,' and I'm sure I've forgotten something. I wish I had a good full-length picture of the border, but it's still young - only three years old now, so it's a work in progress. (These pictures are all PD - pre-digital camera. I'll be sure to get better pictures this year.) This is the only overview picture I have of it, from May of 2005, right after heavy rain caused the retaining wall to fall over into the border - AAACCKK! It looks much better now, really. This is the shady end of the longest border. You can't see in this photo, but I've included two Kalmia (mountain laurels) that should eventually give some nice form. At the back of the border, beside the house, is a doublefile viburnum - amazing foliage and delightful flowers. Again, I'm having to manage its spread a bit - I planted it several years ago, then realized it would get wider than I anticipated. The rest of the area on the left of the path is filled with hosta, lady ferns, variegated solomon's seal, pachysandra, two rhododendrons at the back by the fence, toad lilies, lamium 'Hermann's Pride' and 'Chequers,' a dwarf fothergilla shrub, and in the summer with impatiens. I could probably have gotten away with having NO shrubs and only perennials in this area if I really wanted to, but in the winter it's a straight swatch of barren mulch without the shrubs to break it up. The front (sunny) end of the long border. It's got a backbone of rose of sharon (2), rose 'Roseraie de l'Hay,' lilacs 'Andenken an Ludwig Spaeth' and 'Blue Skies,' rose 'Blaze,' a mugo pine, and an unknown rose (I think it's rosa multiflora, planted by a bird - I have to manage it diligently to keep it in bounds, but I love the sprays of white flowers and its tiny hips). That bed includes tall bearded irises, peonies, pennisetum alopecuroides, salvia 'May Night,' sedum 'Autumn Joy,' aster 'Blue Bird,' knautia, stachys byzantina, an unknown pink aster, daylilies, thrift, geranium 'Brookside' (an incorrigible flopper/spreader, but great flowers), yarrow 'Moonlight,' echinacea, hosta 'Minuteman,' clematis 'Duchess of Albany, climbing one of the rose of sharon bushes), white valerian, alyssum, and others, underplanted with clusters of spring bulbs (daffodils, tulips, and iris reticulata). This border has the fewest annuals of any of my garden areas. The reason for the dense planting of shrubs at the back was at first practical rather than aesthetic: the heavy planting (supposedly) keeps the neighborhood kids from riding their bikes through that area in the winter. . . . Hi T, I received some interesting info from Enerson.. He thinks it could be something that he has been searching for a name for his tree as well for several years, I friend had some trees but he passed and he thinks my bloom that was labeled IR is maybe one of his. He calls it Emerson's Beauty. somme have said they think it is Via Verde (dewaine mentioned that one too!) Thanks to everyone.. If i find the name, it could be the same as yours.. looks at the star in yours too. that is whar Emerson said about mine. Does your have a fragrance? Very Interesting.. Thanks T bothe are rooting.. I guess the tag is coming off of the IR LOL... George, I knew that it wasnt an Intense rainbow.. we had been tring to id this beauty.. I waited for three years for it to bloom. Surprise!!! The first thing I would do is to start composting. Next, you need a design. The landscaping forum is a great place to start. Better Homes and Gardens' website also has a lot of free garden designs. Think about how much time you have to spend, how much water you want to use (water costs money!), whether things are kid-friendly, and so on... A great way to save money is by starting your own plants from scratch. Check out the Winter Sowing forum for an easy, cheap way to do this. I have been winter sowing for 5 years now and our yard looks a whole lot better. The Seed Trading Forum often has send-a-prepaid-envelope for free seeds offers (look for SASBE offers). I got a lot of seeds that way. I also traded extras of the few plants I had on the Plant Trading Forum. There are also probably plant swaps in your area--look for the forum on gardening in your state. Gardeners are a friendly bunch and you'll often read, "Newbies welcome." Discount stores often have plants--but this is where you REALLY have to do your research. One of the discount stores near us was running a special on roses. I wrote down all of the names of the roses and did a search on my computer. Only ONE of those rose varieties was suitable for our area. I went back, got that variety, and planted it using the tips I got from the Rose Forum. It's now happy as a clam and taking over our front bed.

I am very open to anything even empty cards. I love Christmas cards and I think we got 2 last year. Lol I love edibles (especially tomatoes, beans, winter squash and melons). I had a bad year last year and lost most of my herbs ( I have chives, Italian Basil and Parsley) and a lot of my flowers for some reason I have mostly yellows left. Hi T..

It seemed like "yesterday" when you pruned this beauty!!

I remembered this beauty from pics that Jen posted and they were just beautiful.. My trees will hopefully bloom next year and somehow i was thinking that it coukd possibly be a VV? Vera Verde? I had another tree that was mislabeled from a vendor in Florida. It was labeled Aztec gold and it was something more beautiful than that.

Your pics and the one that i had from this mislabeled looked the same and Brad as well as Dewaine called it a possible VV. The original tree was from your area and i was wondering if you had heard of your tree possibly being that variety? Mine is labeled T's beauty!!! I think Peg calls her that too! Mahalo!!

I hope your trees are feeling better from that awful cold snap that you all had.. I agree with you that the leaves protected your tips and that may have saved you trees from more damage.

Thinking of you and hoping that you had a wonderful Christmas!! I know how you love to decorate your home and open it to guest and others to share in the beauty!!! Did you particape in the tour this year?

When my plant needs pruning...seems like annually now...I
usually prune in mid-Jan to mid-Feb. The frost we got just
coincided with the normal times. The plant is about as
dormant as it gets.

Don't know what variety the plant is. It does kinda look
like Kimo and Laura has suggested Vera Verde. I seem to
remember a thread talking about that, but I can't find it.
Anybody remember the thread name?

I just did a google image search on Vera Verde and the most
amazing thing happened. The search found my three pictues
on this thread! Nothing that looks like my flowers showed
up though.

No helper this year. I haven't seen or heard from Jen lately.
Hope things are OK for her. I learned from her
though, that's why the cuttings are neat like that.

Decorated the house as usual, but not part of the tour this
year. But still got lots of nice comments from folks
walking by on how nice the house looked. Even heard one
lady tell her companion that our house was on the tour last
year! Glad folks remember and appreciate our efforts.

Wow- I too remember when you trimmed that beauty! Time sure does fly.... What will you do with all your cuttings? Looks nice and ready to grow like crazy again! :)

Cuttings will go to a nursery in Pasadena. I trade the
cuttings for vegetable starts (mostly tomatoes).

I will probably announce their availability to the folks
here soon. But if you're interested, let me know. Anybody
else too.

I will have some restrictions. I'm not going to go to
great lengths to send them out. Some of them are too
big to mail. And kind of costly too.

I'll probably make the recipients send me a box with
postage. Much easier on me that way. I'm not young any
ore and don't really want to run all over the place for
boxes, etc.

Q, if you type in "Via Verde" plumeria, the search will bring up Dewaine's pics, which look very like yours, IINM.

It's a beautifully shaped tree; you've obviously given it a happy home!

I found Dewaine's Photobucket page last night.

I bought my plant around 1985 at a flower show/sale at the
Puente Hills Mall in Industry. That's about 12 miles from
the mall.

Who knows. Wherever Dewaine's plant came from, it could
have come from the same vendor.

My plant has a red stripe on the back of the petals. I'm
wondering if his has the same stripe.

Your original thread popped up and i loved looking at your pics. Soooo beautiful!! Really enjoyed following the trimming of this gorgeous tree.

Thanks for the email.. i'll be back to you about the info.. I also find this really fascinating!! Things here at my house have been very hectic since my DH had a complete knee replacement.. "nurse Ratchett" has been very busy!! ;-) My email has been backed up and i did read your info..

When i had posted last summer of my mislabeled IR, i had also posted a pic to the FPS asking their opinion about a possible ID. That is when i had a few people say that it looked like Via Verde. Knowing that it can't be called the named variety since it isnt a true cutting from a nammed tree and it is really a Noid from a nursery from Florida (Plumeria Gallery) Don't get me started about that!!! LOL.... Anyway, it looked so much like yours and i had some experts ( Dewaine and Brad from BBB) tell me that it looked like VV. So i tagged my mislabeled tree "Hopeful VV" Jen was great about the proper name.. Thanks Jen!!!
