broccoli question from veggie virgin

Well, not exactly. I have grown tomatoes before & have a pepper plant & a zucchini in the ground for the first time. But I know nothing about most other veggies, however with the price of everything at the grocery store...

Anyway, I saw (when I googled) that broccoli is a cool weather plant, so I should plant now for fall, but I also saw that it doesn't like ground temps very hot & here in OK that is what we would have if I planted it now. I'm confused. When should I plant it? Can I plant now from seed? Also, I seem to remember picking it from somewhere years ago & it had a worm exactly the same color as the broccoli & no matter how often I soaked it in salt-water overnight there were still more worms the next day & I was afraid to eat it. Help!
