The Chilly Palm Tree D.C. Area Visit / Green Spring Garden...

Hello everyone. I have not posted in a while, but I just wanted to drop in and let those of you who are in, or may be in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area know that the Chilly Palm Tree will be in the area on Saturday, May 15th, 2010. Yes, that is this coming Saturday.

They will have a table at the Friends Of Green Spring plant sale at Green Spring Gardens in Annadale, VA, along with about 40 other vendors, including the Master Gardeners of Northern Virginia (Virginia Master Gardeners) with whom I am affiliated. Information on the sale is included at the link below.

The sale begins at 9:00AM Saturday,and goes until 4pm that afternoon. Rain or shine. However, the forecast is for mostly clear conditions with highs in the upper 70s.

I spoke with Sean at The Chilly Palm Tree last week, and not only will they have cold hardy palms, but will also be bringing cold hardy Bananas.

I hope many of you that are in the D.C. area can make it out! Stop by the Master Gardeners table to say hello! Hope to see you there!

I just had 19C today in Toronto and the weatherman says that a snowstorm might come later this weekend around the 401 corridor. If we are lucky it will hit just to our north but we will see freezing temperatures. Toronto can get ice to bring down trees, snow storms but not hurricane blizzards like the US-Canada east coast, and of course damaging thunderstorms with a twister in the area possible all summer. Damaging hail can also fall in my region but is not common like Texas. The west coast of Canada has a much gentler climate and they have been gardening for some time now in that area. My grass is about to start growing. April might be a battle between winter and spring but May can be a sudden switch to summer weather. Canada is large but mostly cold in winter as reputed. Russia has a milder area around Sochi were they grow palm trees. Palm trees can only grow on the west coast of Canada. Both Canada and Russia are so large that they have their milder corner. You should visit Canada. Toronto for its skyline and Vancouver for its exotic beauty.

Anna Since my "pond is above ground just by standing at the edge you're less than 3 feet from the WL. Aroma is one aspect of water gardening most people miss because the flowers are too far away. I had my Madagascar lace plants flower and the aroma was much like dead flesh . Had it not been in an aquarium I would have missed that lol!!! As to the "vanda hedge" an evil "friend" sent me some pix in the Singapore Bo gardens and they were growing them much like you'd grow grapes in rows supported by wires. Since I had bits and pieces of a dozen varieties I decided to try it between two queen palms I have a portable GH along with black IR light with thermostat .for cold weather. This is the beginning of the 3rd year and I have got fantastic growth but not many flowers. An unbelieveable tangle of aerial roots though lol From a distance it looks like the queens have a terrible plant disease. Not very photogenic I'm afraid ;lol I've added some epicatts and dry dends in the folds of the spent fronds also going to add some nepenthes mainly because I can't figure a good way to grow it. Whatever is being neglected, delicate,struggling will go there lol I visit 6 fish and plant related websites everyday spending at least 4 hours on the web . Have to get up very early as the wife will not allow this much time during daylight lol gary

One more thing mikey about your trip. If you are traveling by car or renting a car you need to be aware of the expressway construction. One of the main expressway, Dan Ryan is under a major refiguration that will last a couple of years. And when I say major I do mean it. There are alternate routes that are lovely like traveling down Lake Shore Drive. Even some of the feeder expressway leading downtown will be congested...they already are but this may put us all over the edge. So when you are here turn on to the local TV stations for the updates. If you are staying downtown then your good to go with public transpertation or CTA or Train....Just know were your heading first! Get maps, listen to the radio, AM 780 for updates. Enjoy your trip it will be worth it.

Very true 2 winters ago was there worst in 50 years but there are still some there. Just like us they go the distance to protect there palms. On average our winters are much colder than there's. It always stays very cloudy which keeps the temps up for them. There wetness combined with temps around 0 for a few days dosent bother them. Its our combination of wetness and prolonged cold that kills everything. Most palms that are subtropical can handly temps into the teens with only frond damage..if you can keep them dry that is really the key. If you looks at jim hardys protection method and scale it down for a zone 7 you can grow alot of palms in the ground. Your going to have to do a little work to grow anything other than the normal fortunii and needle there's just no way around it..even the pygmy dates from lowes can take temps in the 20s with protection..just keep them dry and insulate well..the water bottle buffer method is one I might try next year as well

I do not recommend the Chilly Palm Tree. People who have bought from him told me their palms were affected with scale and it spread to their other palm trees!!! Be warned!!

My Butia palm from Chilly Palm Tree had developed scale a few months later too. The eggs must have been there dormant. We removed it by hand twice because it re-occured. But after that it was OK. I was very concerned that if the scale would have spread in my greenhouse to other plants/palms I would have to do major spraying, which would be unhealthy since I grow lots edibles.

Since cold weather palm businesses are hard to come by, I would warn people too, but I would not want to hurt his business too much. I called him about the scale when it formed on my Jelly palm and he did recommend some soaps to help get rid o the scale. If the palm was any larger, removing scale could have been a real ordeal.
