problem on lavender seedlings

hi guys.

I don't know what happen on my lavender seedlings.
my seedlings is about 2 months after germination.
few white dust have covered the leaves especially on the new leaves.

I thought it was a powdery mildew.
I've sprayed with baking soda mixed with horticultural oil and dish soap but nothing happened. I've used milk that have been diluted with some part of water but still nothing happened, the white dust always stay and seems no decrease at all.

what is it? is it powdery mildew or anything else?

impossible without a picture...

but even treated dead mildew does not go away ...

watch for new growth .. if any .... after what you did to the very young seedlings ..

and if that comes out clean.. then you solved the problem.. but the old leaves will never look fresh again ...

also .... not knowing where you are.. or where the plants are.. figure out how this happened ... its usually wet leaves .. at night .. with too much night heat .... [thats when mildews grow ... and why this is usually not a spring time problem] ...

so to avoid it.. dry up you media a bit.. never wet the leaves in the evening ... increase air movement .. and reduce night temps.. if possible .... yeah i know.. easier said than done... lol ...

ps: soap/oil and soda on a babe ... thats a bit overkill ... try not to react so heavily next time .... i am surprised they didnt get chemical burn .... its bordering on trying to kill them.. with too much love ...

thx 4 the reply ken.

sadly I don't have any good quality camera that can take picture very good, I have tried but it seems not view the dust that covered on my seedlings, because the dust will only seen when the leaves get direct sunlight and I have to watch it very near.

I live at south east asia, the temperature is very hot, it can reach about 27 C during the night and can reach 40 C during the noon.

u're right about soap and oil.
at the first time I sprayed that formula in the morning (about 7 am) a little number of leaves were burned within 2-3 hours, but when I apllyed at the evening after sunset it doesn't seem bring bad effect to my seedlings.

that baking soda formula doing good on my crape myrthle, just only 2 times treatment the powdery mildew goes at all, but when I applyed to the my lavender seedlings it doesn't affect at all.
I've never give water directly on the leaves.
the growth seem decreasing now, what I have to do?
is it better to continue baking soda treatment or using diluted milk or anything better than all of those treatments?

Just to reiterate, Caroline, harden them off (should only take a few days now) and put them outside. Plant them out when they reach a reasonable size e.g. 4 - 5 inches. To harden off you could put them in the greenhouse for a day or two, then outside and in the greenhouse at night for 2 days, then out permanently. This is a very cautious programme. They'd probably be fine going out at once but I'm just being careful. Although lavender is from the Med it grows fine in the UK as long as it is in soil which drains well. No need to feed lavender at all. You have enough for a hedge! Good luck.

Sounds like all good advice here, but I'd like to drop a bit of advice when it comes time to plant your lavender into their permanent places. I've successfully grown the same beautiful lavender plants for the last 10 years in the same place by doing the following: Don't plant in the shade. They absolutely love full sun and thrive in the heat. I live in zone 7 and seldom water them in summer. Just remember they come from the Mediterranean region of the world: Southern France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, etc. Hot, sunny, and dry. Plant in very well-drained soil. My husband put in shovel loads of sand into the lavender bed we made. They absolutely HATE wet clay soil, so amend it if that's what you have. Make sure you buy the type of sand to use with plants! I forget what type of sand its called. Prune them back each spring or you'll have thin, straggly lavender. Cutting them back will encourage really bushy, thick plants that have lots of flower spikes. Heavenly to see and smell! And you can get a second flush of flowers if you cut off all old flower spikes when they're done. Simply cut off the top six or eight inches and you'll get a second bloom! I use sharp hedge shears. Watch for spider mites in the heat of summer. Simple spraying every 10 days works. And last, but not least, they WILL reseed for you. You'll find lots of baby lavender growing around the parent plants when Fall comes around! I grow the variety called Hidcote. Good luck!

I don't think I'd recommend that those jiffy pellets be watered from below. Here's my thinking: These pellets are made of 100% peat moss, very finely processed. Oxygen will be at something of a premium in such a mix. Seeds, seedlings, and growing plants require plenty of oxygen (and gas exchange) at the roots in order for rapid cell division to occur. Oxygen in and CO2 out. Watering from above accomplishes this every time you water. However, using those pellets can be a challenge in the first place. I'd be sure to provide good air circulation, absolutely! Next time you may want to think about using small pots and a fast draining potting mix. I've seen lots of recommendations about the chamomile. Powdered cinnamon, too....sprinkled on the top of the soil. I've not had reason to try either of them, but would certainly give it a shot.
