favorite tomato flavor

OK you tomato aficionados. I grew a few different tomatoes this year, but my husband's favorite is still Better Boy. I grew tomande, which did very well in our OK weather, but he doesn't care for the texture or the taste.

My question is what other tomatoes come close to the taste of Better Boy? I always like to grow a few varieties (not as many as some of you ;-) to have a better chance against disease, etc.

My favorites this year are Aunt Ruby's German Green, Brandywine, Peacevine Cherry, Uncle Steve's Italian Plum, and Juane Flammee. My husband and kids have different tastes, though, and would answer differently.

There's a thread going on over on the tomato forum right now about favorite tomatoes for taste this year, if you want to peruse that for ideas, too.

My favorites have been whatever kind a good friend of mine gave me. They are so much better than those from the grocery store and cheaper than those at the farmers' market. I tried growing tomatoes twice since living in OK. The first time I had grape tomatoes and we had a good supply, so the following year, I tried a couple of grape tomatoes and added one of the varieties of Better Boy. Well, my yard guy mistakenly whacked down two plants, two others just didn't make it, and the two remaining mostly produced foliage and few tomatoes. I think I'll keep my friend and not try to grow any more.

Just pulled the last of my IHs on Friday after a hard freeze. It was still producing and ripening -- a winner yet again. Even though we'd been through several frosts and several cold nights the fruit was still completely edible. A local tomato guru says to top your plants the first of August. I forgot and didn't do it until September. Oh well. The whole season was bizarre. I didn't have luck with Cherokee purple a few years back and haven't tried again. Got 2-3 ugly fruit, total. I tried Borghese this year ... a oval-ish cherry meant for drying. Over the top productive and very perfect fruit right up to the end. No disease or weirdness from the heat/drought. No splitting. Drying is fun but I eat the things like potato chips.

deb, I had a similar experience this year trying Extreme Bush for the first time. Prolific and pretty - - but tasteless to me. I just finished a turkey sandwich a few minutes ago topped off with my first WES oxheart tomato. What a wonderful taste - - will definitely grow again next year. Carolyn had recommended it to me earlier this year, and now I know why she likes it! It's kind of funny that my favorites are relatively unknown varieties: Goose Creek, Earl's Faux, Ed's Millennium, Indian Stripe - - you can't find seeds at too many places. The only Hybrids that I continue to grow year after year are Dona and Carmello. I'm done growing anything that has a "Bush" name in it (NOT a political commentary)....... Raybo

In Ohio my favorite brand was Herr's in the red bag. (rippled) (possibly because they were fresher where I shopped?) Lays was blah. Ruffles was good but usually too salty. Here in Florida, my favorite brand surprisingly is Lays. (they're fresher here?) Herr's are pretty much impossible to find. (at least the natural potato flavored ones) Ruffles are still okay, but still a bit too salty and not always as fresh, and not worth paying extra for. Great Value can be as good or better if fresh, albeit a bit inconsistent, but so are Lays. Mission corn chips, I think they have/had a white corn one that I really liked that was good with salsa that I couldn't find last times I looked. Frito's scoops are good though. I'm getting tempted to order these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FRKEYNM Definitely not something I'd normally do but times don't seem quite normal right now. YouI know things are not quite normal when a major victory, almost a reason for celebration, is finally being able to order a four pack of Hurst's 15 bean mix and having the order actually go through without getting a "Some of your items are no longer available" message while trying to checkout. :-)

From time to time I've seen little specialty genuine Italian ice places open up but they usually don't stay in business long. The price is too high and too much competition from the cheapo soft serve and other places. Not enough Italian ice connoisseurs out there and not spread around the US. I'm sure there are some places but none near my radar screen. It's hard enough nowdays just to get a good hard ice cream cone or even some at the grocery. A couple of our famous and delicious local and regional dairies have shut down, long prior to the pandemic so the supply even at the grocery store is limited to a few brands and the same at every store. Back in the day a lot of small towns had local ice cream dairies, including mine, and then two ice cream shops that sold it in many confections. Those day long gone, sigh . . . My aunt met my uncle when he was on a road trip from a nearby college, at our local home town place, long lost to the mists of time. I used to ride my bike out to another regional dairy store and get a wonderful cone as a fun way to spend time and allowance during the summer. That too is gone . . . We do have a drive through Dairy Queen that does a brisk business . . .

Brandywine, sungold cherries, and bisagano(not sure on the spelling on that one) those burst with flavor and will probably be my main tomato plants from now on.

I grow about 60 kinds of tomatoes every year and have for many years. Keep in mind that the taste of tomatoes vary enormously from year to year, so one that is this year's favorite might not even make next year's list.

My favorite tomatoes for good flavor are Black Krim (ALWAYS the best-tasting tomato in my garden) (slicer), Brandywine (slicer), Sungold (cherry), SunSugar (cherry, not as good as Sungold, but pretty good), Aunt Ruby's German Green (slicer), Sweet Million (cherry), Super Snow White (cherry), Dr. Wyche's Yellow (slicer), Ildi (cherry), Cherokee Purple (slicer), Nebraska Wedding (slicer) and Sweet Chelsea (cluster).

In the second tier of good-tasting tomatoes are these: Better Boy (slicer), Mortgage Lifter (slicer), Big Boy (slicer), Risentraube (chery), Russian Persimmon (slicer), Sweetie (cherry), Brandy Boy (slicer), Jubilee (slicer), Green Grape (cherry), Yellow Pear (not as good as previously mentioned yellow grape type known as Ildi).

For tomato sauce, my favorties are San Marzano and Opalka paste tomatoes. I think they are only so-so in taste when fresh, but they make a great-tasting sauce when cooked.

If I could grow only five plants each year, I'd have one each of the following: Black Krim, Brandywine, San Marzano, Sungold and Super Snow White.
