Comments (2)Hi Marcantonio, I grew the Gransasso strain of the Italian Giant Red Pear last year. If your Franchi one was anything like mine from last year, I have to agree, it was a very good tomato. The Gransasso strain was a vigorous grower too. Your Calabrese Belmonte sounds beautiful. I never heard of it before. I would of noticed because my family is from that area of Italy. I'm growing 4 Italian varieties this year. 2 originally from Bully. He got them from his Italian immigrant neighbors. They are named Rinaldo and Ernesto. One is a paste. It is nice, not really dry like some paste, so it can be eaten fresh. The other is huge sort of shaped like the pear varieties. It is very tasty too. The other 2 are more well known varieties, Costoluto Fiorentino and Costoluto Genevese. Fiorentino is very pretty. The first ones I picked didn't taste so great, but I can't make a final judgment until I have more since sometimes the first ones just don't taste as good. Genevese I have to admit I made salsa with a bunch of tomatoes used them, but I don't remember tasting one before the salsa making. I think I did try, but I don't remember, lol. I tried a bunch of really good ones at the time, so I think it might of been just ok. Remy...See MoreInteresting Italian heirlooms
Comments (10)PupillaCharites, It always grows well for me with no problems. That could be due to my friend growing it and saving seeds for many years and having it acclimate to our micro-climate. It is grown in the part of Italy where he grew up and he says the climate is similar to what we have in N. CA. It is indeterminate and can grow huge and unruly. I also notice it is the first of my plants to stress and tank when it gets really hot here in September but my friend manages to keep his going. He is a very experienced tomato grower and I'm not. Canestrino has less leaf problems compared to the other types I grow. Very productive and usually produces the largest tomato in my garden but not this year, they are all on the small side. Hope it does well for you....See Moresunsi
