About me: I am a wildlife biologist/ecologist. I have a BS in biology from Utah State University and an MS in Wildlife Biology from Arkansas Tech University. I have worked for the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, and the Forest Service as a Wildlife Biologist. I am passionate about gardening and read peer reviewed science about crop production on a regular basis. I use this information to improve my own garden. My favorite crop is tomatoes, of which I grow many varieties. My ultimate goal for tomatoes is to find the best heirloom varieties as a base stock and then begin to develop and refine my own heirloom tomato variety over the rest of my lifetime. I am also highly interested in other heirloom plants, for example recently I have become more interested in peppers. I draw from my scientific background to improve my gardening. When it comes to controversial gardening subjects, I obtain my information to the extent practicable from peer reviewed published liturature. Rather than try to institute the latest tips, trick or fads for gardening, I try to understand why these tips and tricks work to determine if they would be valid in my garden. I mostly use organic techniques because it is simply good soil managment. However, I am not strictly an organic gardener because I realize that in some instances there is not always an organic solution to every problem. Being a conservation profesional, I am aware of the environmental effects of my actions and take measures to avoid causing impacts. I am motivated to garden to maintain my own seed bank, provide food for my family, reduce my grocery bills, increase my emergency food storage, eat the freshest and best tasting veggies and because I just love living things that grow.
