How did it all happen???

I originally put the potted elephant ear outdoors. I moved it indoors before winter. It has been growing ok until recently. About two weeks ago, I noticed the plant was weakening gradually. However, I normally do not pay attention closely to the plants when watering, unless something noticeable. The two leaves were dying so quickly. Yesterday when I watered, I found many tiny black insects on the good leaves especially underneath them. See below:

I know it's hard to see them, but I was spraying SAFE gardening soap onto the leaves. I also found many insects like leeches at the bottom of the pot where the water collected. Usually water does not collect at the bottom, but it has been recently. I was like, "Oh My!!!!!" when I saw those crawling thingy.

How did it all happen? I have never had anything like it before. Is it because the potted plant is coming from outdoors? What can I do to the plant besides spraying SAFE? Thanks

Your "insects like leeches" look more like millipedes. If so, not a problem although I must admit you may be a bit unnerved to have so many of them.

Take the pot outdoors in order to brush off the critters.

You are right!!! Not "may be a bit unnerved to have so many of them," but I was "Oh, Gosh!!! Goose bump all grew on me. Wooo.... Brush them off..... how scary! Why did they come on the pot anyway, especially at the bottom. What do they do over there, just drinking water??

I am Trish and I am a rose potaholic. I don't have a spot to grow them in the ground and I have taken up all the available spots at my parents'. Being English and Welsh respectively they have an innate love for roses so that is good. I started my rose obsession through tragedy. Our son was stillborn in the fall of 2006 (sorry to those who have heard this already) and being already into gardening in general I thought it would be nice to have something growing in his memory. I debated a tattoo but was too broke and could not find the 'perfect' image. I did a bit of research on "the language of flowers" and came across the white rose. I asked on gardenweb for recommendations for a nice white rose as some of you will remember. I ended up deciding on Madame Hardy but by then I was a goner anyway. Now I have used up all available space at my parents' and a few pots outside and still eyeing up more. Face it, we're sunk Aggierose.

Well, dang. I spent Saturday watching my husband dig out the roses I'd grown from cuttings started last fall, and rummaging around in my pot ghetto pulling out more roses and irises to give to friends I was going to visit. I encouraged my husband with the idea of how many roses we were going to be free of, how much smaller the pot ghetto would be, how much more garden area we'd for for, ah, rose cuttings that I want to start this fall. The pots filled the car, leaving just room for the driver. Away I went. Back I came with--surprise!--two or three flats of baby perennials and shrubs and two bags of various pieces of plants, and even a new rose. Well! This is how it happens. Hey Dot, I'll be there about 10am, keep the comfy chair open for me. I'll bring chips and a 12 pack! Oh, and probably no more than 20-25 others! :D Seriously Dotmom, I'm glad you'll have a great day. I was going to suggest what gardenspice did, don't hesitate to take shortcuts. One suggestion though, don't hesitate to say "While you guys do the dishes I'm going to lie down and rest for about 15 minutes (or however long you want)" Take a short nap if you like and be refreshed. Nothing wrong with that at all. I always felt bad when a host/hostess was so dog tired after a long day. Most people don't realize the amount of work that goes into this stuff. My poor mother would work literally days before the holidays in prep work, the stress and worrying about forgetting something would take its toll also. Then the big day she'd be lucky to get 3-4 hours sleep, be up at about 2-3 AM to start making rolls, pies and stuff. The rolls had to be started the day before and a final kneading about 10pm. Ah, but they were so delicious! I know she enjoyed doing it, but like I say, few realize how much time is involved and don't hesitate to take a nap so you can enjoy more of the day with them too and not be totally exhausted.

Well I have been wanting white, but I certainly did not expect to get one that way:) no one seems to grow perrenials in my neighborhood due to the deer and there's no phlox at all other then mine so I am very pleased to have it. glad I did not throw those bits away. ( i have deer sprinklers which is why i have plants and the neighbors don't)

when bringing a plant indoors from the yard in fall ... YOU have to make sure the soil/pot is bug free .. or sooner or later something is going to appear ....

you can either repot in fresh sterile soil in hopes of removing such ...

or apply a systemic drench to the pot a few weeks prior to bringing them into the house... i prefer to do it outdoors to reduce use of such in the house ....

prevention is so much easier than cure ....

if it were me.. i would either get rid of the plant and start over ... or i would apply a systemic drench and live with the smell for a few days ...i know others will object ... but one plant.. one application.. isn't going to kill you ... apply according to directions ...

millipedes eat decaying material .. as far as i know ... they are feasting on whatever is in the bottom of the pot ....

Ken, if you can smell the fumes of a pesticide you are inhaling the toxins. Inhalation is one of the most common modes of chronic AND acute pesticide exposure. Just so you know.....I CARE about you, man! :-)

and i ALWAYS expect the warnings from you ...

but i also fear for the posters sanity .... lol

do you disagree with using the systemic in fall prior to bringing them in the house????
