Any palms that will grow in North Alabama?

We are putting in a pool and doing all the landscaping ourselves (actually contracted the pool out myself...so I'm running low on creativity...too many decisions for pool!)...I just finished one large bed area around our pavers and used 2-3 specimen arbor vitae/firs and filled in with azaleas, daylilies, juniper, crepe myrtle, knockout roses..standard landscaping up in this area.

We are trying to bring one plant specimen from everywhere we've vacationed as a family and we used to go to a house in Santa Rosa, FL that had these short and tall palms around their pool....I know there is a company about 30 minutes south of me that only sells palms...but they may try to sell me anything...I'd like to be informed..I'm looking for something short (less than 8') and have a 5x5 area to put it in....here is my pool, let me see if I have a picture of where I want to put it...thanks for any help!

I'd like to put it at the corner where my daughter in the orange shorts is at...where you come out the screen door and the pavers make a corner....

Your probably in zone 7b so you can grow trachycarpus (windmill palm) sabal minor needle palm and Yuccas. with some protection anything is possible

if you want a palm from florida that dont get to big that could survive in your area i would choose a sabal etonia or just a regular sabal minor! it shouldnt get no bigger than your 8ft. x 5ft. space & if it does come close to that your talking about maybe 25+ years! plus they have no spines or anything to poke your children. you have a beautiful backyard & what ever you choose to put will only add more beauty, happy growing!

It is still June, so not so bad, it is going to be much worse later. From the list of repeat blooming roses that I don't spray these are the winners so far. Good culture, plenty of sun and defoliated roses :( I am trying to get rid of roses that require spraying, but it is so difficult to part with some of them (Lady Hillingdon, Yolande de Aragon, Deuil de Dr Reynaud, Abraham Darby, etc). I live in Georgia and am also moving to Alabama (Birmingham) next month where I am originally from. The climate in Atlanta is almost identical to most of Alabama unless you are moving to South AL were the biggest difference is hotter and more humidity in the summer down south. I have just started growing roses so I'm not an expert by any means. So, for what it's worth this has been my experience. I do get dark mildew spots and this is what you have to do to control. Water early in the morning by the soaker method making sure to keep leaves dry. When you do see spots, cut the infected area immediately making sure that your shears have been sterilized after each cut. Do not leave any fallen leaves or cut stems on the ground. As soon as you see or cut any, discard as far away from the bushes as possible. This helps, but it is hard to control, at least for me. Other more experienced growers may have better methods. I also spray with fungicides and use systemic granules with minimum success. The biggest threat to my roses has been japanese beetles. These horrible insects show up in the beginning of June and last until the end of June, however, last year I had them for 2 months. They eat every rose in site until the rose looks like a piece of lace when and if it gets to open. I sprayed, smashed and anything else anyone suggested to no avail. You just about have to let them run the course. I have been away from Alabama for about 3 years now and was not growing roses then, so I'm not sure if the beetle problem is as bad there, but I know they are there as well. My Aunt lives in Birmingham and has them as well every June, on other plants. I have different varieties of roses and they have all done well. I must say that aside from the problems I mentioned above, they are beautiful. Good luck!

My large trachy (windmill palm), needle palm, and musa basjoos (hardy bananas) will be wintered in the ground here in MN. Needle gets a rosebush cover, mulched, and with a small string of Xmas lights. Basjoos will get rosebush covers, and tons of mulch, and cut off with about a foot or two of stem remaining, as they do grow over 10-15 feet during the summer, and with 5-6 inch wide stems. These are tried and true methods of wintering these plants in ground in zone 4/5. The large trachy will get a large version of a foam rosebush cover, a foam box with lightweight wood frame. Xmas lights, and/or a CFL bulb or two inside the box during the coldest times, to keep the temp in the box above 20F when it gets below zero outside. Fronds will be tied up somewhat to allow it to fit in a 2x2x8 foot 2-piece box. Again, a tried and true method for wintering larger palms in cold zones. For those Minnesotans who think I am nuts, do a little reading in the "palms and cycads" forum here... The mature trachy and needle palm are good down to the 10s, even single digits above zero*F without significant damage. I just started some date palms in little buckets! Went searching through and found this. I am so impressed. I love date palms they are beautiful and the entire lifecycle especially the amazing fruit they create just fascinates me. So I am going to start my own and include it in my plans.. They're in pots i'm guessing i'll have to put them in the ground pretty early. I live in Alabama, I have a piece of land that is empty I inhereted and to turn it into a fruit garden is the goal that will provide a substantial amount of fruit rather than going to the grocery to get it. I am Starting with planting my date palms. Also starting peaches and apples. Hopefully they survive, it can get as cold as you recorded here and very rarely but possibly lower. But its just an experiment after all. I was actually looking for techniques that exist where I could attempt to possibly make the palm grow so that it doesn't actually trunk up much and could be harvested by an average or tall person with the need for only a stool or nothing at all. Needle palms are nice but slow growers and shrubby. So you would buy larger ones if possible and place them in a nice visible out of the way spot because they have needles.

A tracky fortuni would be perfect to but plant closer to the house south facing if possible to block winter winds.

This would be GREAT for you to try a Pindo Palm (can get large over time)taking the same precautions as for the tracky palm. EZ winter care for your zone would be to just cover the pindo and tracky with plastic and keep dry and vented on sunny days. It will look tropical for sure.

Go for it! You have the perfect space for it.

Thank you all for the great ideas!! I have a list I can take to the nursery this weekend!! I don't mind covering and caring for it, I know the kids would love being reminded of our family times in Florida!! :)

...and if a palm doesn't seem to work,you can't beat a banana plant for a nice tropical effect!

I am sure what ever you decide on will look nice!

Definately try a pindo palm, even if they have one, shop around south of your area.

The banana is a great idea too! The Japanese variety comes back every year and grows to ~10 feet in one season and re-emerges every Spring. Jimhardy know the name of them.

dear lmhall , trachycarpus fortunei is growing quite well here in birmingham , in fact it is blooming again this year.one of these trachys is a ? bulgarian seedling from oikos nursery, and the other one is from home depot.both are growing quite well.in our clay soil be careful not to plant too deep,but conversely,don't plant too shallow.(one palm fell over in a strong wind,?maybe small tornado,it's propped up now)also,put your palms in place in the ground soon,so as to be more acclimated to our winter temps.hope this helps.

I think pindo palms, windmill palms, needle palms, sabal minors, musa basjoos, and other tropical plants in pots would really liven up the spot and give it a tropical feel. Pindos will need protection and windmill palms might need some for the first year or 2. Needles and sabal minors could also use some protection, but if they werent greenhouse grown, they should do fine. If you want something a little more exotic then Jubeas are a great idea, but a challenge to grow, but more of a challenge to find at a decent size.

I could see some crape myrtles growing all the way at the end of the screenroom to the left of the slides. They bloom very nicely when older and do fine in my zone 7.
