My back Yard Palm Project...lots of pics

Its still in the beginning stages, but I can see more grass leaving my back yard soon. I have been officially bit by the palm bug and well, the funds need to build back up. I wanted a fast hedge and canopy shade for some palms, so 4 varieties of clumping bamboo is doing the trick.

And the palm that inspired it all... Chambrynonia Macrocaropa or flame thrower Palm. I had to have this palm and look forward to its first leaf. I suspect some shrink now that its in full sun, but it sure is nice to look at. The Adonidia I got from a house demolition and the Coconut, I grew from a tiny shoot I found floating in the canal.

Lots of work, but worth it,

This is the before. I kept the Mexican petunia and Asparagus Fern, just hacked it back under control.

Great start! It looks like your have a really big yard to plant with palms. What types of bamboo did you go with? The one plant in the last picture looks like Bambusa malingensis. BTW, you have the best looking grass I have ever seen in Florida.

I think PBase was having a bad day last week. I hope everyone can see them now. Patrick888: Yes, it is my own photo. These were taken after dark with a Nikon D70 and a couple of Nikon speedlights, one shooting trough a translucent white umbrella, the other mounted on the camera with a difussion dome. Margaret: The cultivar name is "Sold Gold". Thanks. mantorvillain: I've had this one for two full years now. I got a cutting three Falls ago and grew a nice sized plant that first spring. I kept one main trunk and rooted a second. Last year they both made nice sized plants and have really come into their own this year.

Thanks. I felt blessed to have such a regal visitor but also know my dear duckies are in danger!Too bad they need to come THIS close to humans to survive. Anna we repotted some Blue goddess and gave some to two friends. One friend in Vero with a huge pond said his died.He guessed it was because he TREATED his pond with anti- growth chemicals! Ya think!!!?The ducks trim the lily pads but cannot get the flowers. I do have a photo of ducklings WALKING on them though! Funny thing is they grow best on the pond with the waterfall. There are some trying to get established in the left hand corner of the bottom pic(out of view) My mom loves the flowers! They are such a great addition!!!! And quite easy to care for! Tanya

Thanks everyone Andy I never had scale on the larger majesty but the smaller majesty in the 4th pic was attacked by scale in the winter and still has some. Jim its 88 degrees right now on my weather station and the forecast is 84 91 95 95. The weather is great it was cool at the beginning of the week but its getting better.

Thanks Jim! The slow growing trachy has proven to be very cold tolerant. Its a small plant, but it survived 5F with no protection other than a flipped over garbage bin (no lights or frost cloth like all my other palms get). Its also in full shade so the sun doesnt warm it up much in the winter. Thanks wetsuiter! Not sure what I plan to do with the sabal minor seeds. I have at least 40 of them, so maybe I will give a few out and then I'll try a few myself and whatever is left I'll plant in my yard and see what happens. Im not sure If I will throw them in a forest or not, but if they prove to be great growers and I get some more seeds next year, then I definitely will give that a try (maybe not in a forest, but in a friend's yard). Thanks Jacklord! I wish I lived in Miami, that would be a great place for tropical plants! I live about 20-30 miles south of Manhattan so its much more suburban than a place like Queens. Thanks Greg! I know, I had a ton of pics, but usually there are even more than this! I have definitely expanded my collection a lot this past year! My pindo grew about 3 fronds (the newly planted one, the one in the ground for 3 years grew only 1/2 a frond this summer!). I think thats pretty good for the first year and Im hoping for even better growth next summer. I cant wait till Im walking underneath a canopy of palm fronds! The ginger isn't edible, well actually I think it is edible to a certain extent, but its not grown to be eaten. The flowers are extremely fragrant (probably one of the most fragrant flowers you can grow) and thats the main reason why people plant them. I never really thought much of them until I went to Hawaii and saw them planted by the 100s! I got my butterfly ginger as small bulbs from Hawaii (they grew VERY fast since they are only a little over a year old) and the spiral ginger I got from a trade (a nice sized bulb that is probably gigantic right now). Thanks kelly! Its getting more and more jungle like every year! Not sure where I will be putting the plants soon! Thanks for looking everyone! Thank You, if you only knew how much crab grass I have. For my hedge, I planted 1 Sunburst Bamboo on each end and next to them a Blue Chungii and then 2 Textilis Gracilis in from that and then 7 Alphonse Karr in the middle. 15 bamboo plants total.

Here are some front yard shots...the Licuala Grandis I have since moved back into a container since I want to have it for many years and they dont really like the soil here.

I have more Christmas Palms than I care to admit but the previous owner planted them. My Canary Island Date Palm is growing faster than I expected.

This is the coconut palm I just planted in the back with all the new stuff. I took this picture 6-9-07 how fast they do grow...it will only be outpaced by the bamboo

What palm is that large one between the coco and the ti plants? The one with three huge fronds? some sort of dypsis? Areca? It looks really nice.

I have a large estate that i inherited in El Salvador that i am going to landscape little by little. Last year we planted a long row of coconuts on either side of the driveway leading to the house. The grower said they were dwarf. They are already fruiting. That large palm looks like one i would like to grow. thanks!

You're killing me with your palm pictures. People probably think I'm crazy going through what I have to do to keep four small (4-8 foot) palms alive in zone 4. I have some relatives in California that ridicule me (in fun) that I want to grow palms in northern Utah. They say all palms are just rat hotels. I wish I had such beautiful rat hotels in my yard!

An absolutely beautiful yard! I like your yellow Malalayan dwarf coconut, which has become my favorite Malayan. What part of southwest Florida do you live in and what is your average minimum temp there each winter?

Thank You, I do work hard to keep it nice. Our average minimum winter temperature in Cape Coral,FL is between 54 and 59 degrees(from what I could find)and an average winter temp of 64, and my wife and I love it as much as our palms do. All I know is the weather is just plain awesome in the winter.

I could have sworn it was a Maypan coconut. I have a malayan dwarf that sprouted near the same time that is about half the size.

My back yard will see many more palms this summer. I'm looking at a few dipsis and some Vietchii variety. And a Caryota urins maybe.

those Adonidia/Christmas Palms are BEAUTIFUL!!! i love the little ones by the patio. theyre short and very cute!! i would like to have a Christmas palm if i could find one. where i live you cant find much tropical stuff like the lucky people in Fla can. lol

Very nice...I'm here in Tampa and just planted two flames and one golden flame. Being I am new to these palms you mentioned if in full sun their growth will shrink a bit? Any updates/info would be greatly appreciated!

Hello.I'm with ya on the grass thing.Boring!I also was bit by the palm/ bamboo bug about 10 years ago.Yes it is alot of work.I live north of the Daytona area.So I envy your warmer weather.What got me started was a visit to the old Dent Smith house.Ever head of him?Lol.Well as a new palm nut you should look up.10 years in and 60+ varieties of palms growing.Some from rare seed from Den'ts old yard.I have learned alot.I like to push the limit like Dent did.Alot of palms I have growing here should not be.I also have 11 varieties of bamboo growing.What I know about flame throwers is they don't like full sun.Will burn.Ever go to Fairchild in Miami?Theirs are in part shade.So go to these types of places.Look & learn.Also,blue chugii looks much better in shaded area.Will be very yellow in direct sun.One question I do have.The palm right of garage-Is it a Dypsis baronii?

Very nice! You can definitely tell that's a south Florida property with how healthy the coconut palms look!

Or just by the fact that a Licuala grandis will grow outdoors (only happens in very southern Florida or Hawaii, in the US. Palms near garage look like beefy Dypsis lutescens.
