I repotted this majesty. It was completely root bound even though I repotted it last summer. It is getting huge.

I got a great deal on this siam ruby so i picked up to this is the one im keeping

I played around with the saturation and this came out good. This is a canna indica that I grew from seed and the leaf pattern is very different from the parent.

I volunteer at the local botanical garden and last year i planted 2 windmills and a waggie they had. I protected all of them and they are doing great.

I took this picture at my house in the pensylvania. Its a zone 5b there and i did some experiments there. I planted trachy seedlings but all died, surprisingly a prickly pear survived the winter in a pot.

Thanks Ive had it for 5 years now and it grew alot. To keep it so green I fertilize it weekly and keep it in a dish of water all summer. Inside it stays by a sunny window and only gets watered once a week and no fertilizer.

Hello Kal, Sometimes I use Punch to set up building masses, but most designing I do by hand. Paper and pencil are my best friends. (Trace paper, too, and a million erasers). Disregarding what you have read in the past, do you think straight lines are formal? I personally don't. Not intrinsically, at the very least. They can be used to create very formal designs, yes, but they don't necessarily equate into a formal design. In your space, for example, the patio won't be the only thing in the space, and thus can be tempered by other elements to create the look or aesthetic that you want. The types of plants you choose, and/or their arrangement and/or placement can alter the look of the patio by visually breaking up the edges or by accentuating them. Even within the patio, the colour combinations, textures, patterns, scale of the pavers, all of these have an effect on the overall feeling. I personally would say that a rectilinear patio would suit the space better, given its size. With a curvy patio, you might have to compromise on patio area to accommodate curves. The leftover space between the patio and fence may be too narrow at spots to plant with anything significant. There's a lot to consider when you're designing a space, which is good when you're still in the planning stage and it's easier to change things around. I don't want to plan the space for you, since you are the one who really knows what you want to achieve. But I will try, and hopefully with the help of others on the forum, to push you to explore other opportunities or ideas that you usually wouldn't have. - Audric

Juliann, I'll post a site from the UK that has pictures of various types of gardens. This link goes to their Cottage Garden which they say is "contrived to look uncontrived". There are many other types of gardens there that might provide inspiration. Which plants you choose depends on which climate zone you are in. I'm in zone 3 so am somewhat limited in what I can grow. I'll post a pic of what I call my wild bird garden. It's an area in my large garden that has the birdfeeder and birdbath. I allow the flowers to go to seed for the birds so they self-seed. This area has changed over many years altho I initially seeded shasta daisies (the butterflies love them) and yarrow and planted a few established perennials. The yarrow seeds I planted were a mix of red, pink, and white, but the white resembles the wild yarrow we have so we pull it out and it's mostly now only tones of pinks and red. There are also Lamb's Ears because they seed all over my garden but I leave them in this wild area (the bees love them). There are a few other plants, a pink mallow that's 'weedy' but it fills the space and is quite pretty and we also have several lilacs here. Near that area there is also a drift of common old irises which we've allowed to spread. They are in the lower part of the rockery and I will eventually weed some of them out as the bloom time is not very long. If I were deliberately planting a wildflower garden I would not buy a wildflower mix as there could be invasive plants in it. I planted a mix about 14 years ago and still have Dame Hesperis (Dame's Rocket) altho pull out many every year and try to dead-head them ASAP before they seed. It's quite a weed in warmer climates. I would choose seeds of plants I like that are hardy but not invasive and mix them together. Another option is to plant in swaths with various plants and grasses hardy to your area. Keep in mind the moisture requirements of the plants as you decide. The area where I have shastas, mallow, and yarrow needs little watering and only a spring weeding so is easy care. Nelson: If that nice manihot suddenly disappears from the BBG in the next week or so I may need some hush money to keep my mouth shut about a certain yard down Vincent way. I think you know the one I'm talkin 'bout. :>) The conservatory & attached greenhouses are now closed temporarily for repairs, at least that's what the signs say.....not sure what exactly they're doing though. Wish they could somehow find the money to tear the old thing down & build something bigger & better. Jen: tropicals & palms are my favorites too, & the lack of very many is about the only criticism I have of the BBG. In the conservatory (when it's open) they do have several tropical palms, bananas, cycads, bromeliads, etc., but I just wish they would plant more cold-hardy palms out in the gardens. There are several that will do very well here. You will most likely enjoy both The Plant Odyssey & Hanna's nursery here in B'ham as well as the Farmer's Market in the early spring when they have dirt cheap prices on lots of tropicals. Purpleinopp: glad you enjoyed the pics & hope you can make it up here to see the gardens sometime. You could easily spend a half day or more there. And the B'ham zoo is right across the street.

The last Butterfly Garden Tour (sponsered by the Illinois Audubon Society) was in 2005... I was told they would be doing them every other year, since doing it every year is "too much work". I offered to help organize, but have not heard a whit from anyone. :P Usual garden walks in the spring have been disappointing.... most are professionally landscaped gardens (professionally maintained as well... meaning probably non-organic...) where the owners haven't a clue about what is in their yard. I vote for the natives like you, bttfly9! Working on organizing my OWN butterfly walk... as I always see awesome gardens while riding around on my bike.... perhaps next year! :) Sandy

That Majesty palm is very impressive! I've never seen a potted majesty that beautiful. I can't keep mine from going into decline. Even outside in summer, mine never grow, so I gave them away and stick with the easier palms.

Everything looks great! Nice new spindle palm, they grow fast so it will be big in no time!
The Majesty palm looks great as always. Its definitely the nicest potted Majesty palm I have ever seen. Wish mine had fronds that green and a trunk that fat!
Those Cacti could probably come back from a zone 3! They are incredibly hardy, mine were accidentally dug out last December so they had no roots all winter long, but sat there during the winter and re-rooted in the spring no problem!

Awesome, great job with the Majesty palm, whenever I've gotten one it always ends up infested with scale. I finally stopped getting them a few years ago. I should try one agian, I always give my potted palms some systemic granuals in August and it seems to keep mites and scale away all winter.

Andy I never had scale on the larger majesty but the smaller majesty in the 4th pic was attacked by scale in the winter and still has some.

Jim its 88 degrees right now on my weather station and the forecast is 84 91 95 95. The weather is great it was cool at the beginning of the week but its getting better.

The cannas in the pictures are canna indica, canna indica purpurea, and canna wyoming. I also have canna pretoria but not in pots. Which picture are you talking about. I dont have a saw palmetto. If your talking about the silver palm thats a blue med fan palm

Oh god. Never mind I see now. Its the palm with the purple heart in the pot. I totally missed the huge trunk the first time I looked at the photos. Is that a trachy?
