It's ridiculously COLD right now. I don't see what possible advantage you would have by planting the palm in the ground right now. It's not like it's going to be pushing growth in this cold. I would wait until we have some serious signs of an end to this freaky winter/spring of ours. The palm will transplant well even if it turns hot suddenly (as long as its watered). Be patient and WAIT!

Your best bet would be to plant it in a pot and then transplant it.. I am sorry to say but if you plant it in the ground now it won't have a chance as a snowball in

I may be unpopular when I say this...but....
Here in Florida (even where I live, where it freezes) most people plant new trees (including palms) in NOVEMBER. They hurricane cut the palms and get them into the ground, where they go through the winter pretty much just fine.

The kinds of palms they do this with are Pindos, Canary Island dates, Pygmy dates, Med fans, Mexican fans, Queens, and some others that are common and cold hardy whose names I am not up on.

I didn't plant mine in NOvember, I waited til February, and planted 2 pygmy dates, a Canary Island date, a new Med fan, 2 Trachys, and 2 silver dates. I was too busy in November, and thought Feb would be okay, then we had that one freaky night that it dropped to 23 in mid-Feb, but it didn't damage any of my new palms one bit.

Until last night, its been anywhere from 45-68 at night. Last night it decided to be 40 (could have been worse, it was suppoed to be 32)

Since you missed NOvember, I'd agree and say wait a week or 2 more til it warms up.

Thanks for all your replies. I may have worded my post incorrectly. I do have the patience to wait, but how long can it stay in its root ball the way it is?
I guess I will have to plant it in a pot then in the ground when its warmer but I didn't want to do that.
I touched the root ball last night and its darn cold. Feels very moist (not frozen) but I guess I just dont want the thing to die on me!

Hi all,
Here is my Yatay that I planted. Appears to be doing well, but very confusing as to what its doing.
The center branches that are emerging turned a light green/yellow as did some of the branches.
Then temps began to warm up and the entire tree was an even green again.
Now we are having temps in the 60-70s during the day and the branches that are coming out of the center are light yellow/white. Not sure if they are emerging or still there. I need to make a mark somewhere.
The existing branches are drooping more as well.
Is this cause for concern? Some of the branches turned a light green again....
Not sure if I should try to help it someway? (fertilize)? Or just let it be?
Any suggestions will be awesomely appreciated!

This pic was taken about 4 days after planting it. You can see the branches are a lighter color. They had since turned green but turned back again this way but more yellow/white.
I will try to take a pic today when I get home to compare.

Your plant looks normal to me although it kinda looks wet
How much are you watering ?
If your seeing a color change it's probaly just a little
"transplant shock " just give it some time and don't keep it wet . For the most part it looks healthy.

Here is an updated pic of my Yatay.... Does it look ok? Branches are turning brown which I believe is from the sun which also leads me to believe it was grown maybe in a green house?
