need help / advice asap please!!!

Hi All,

Just as I thought my windmill palm made it through this year, looks like its giving up!

This is the first winter not protected in the ground. It pushed up one branch and opened up nicely.

Then it started to push up another one, which looked healthy and a portion of it was brown. It never fully opened yet but still is moving upwards.

Then there is another branch emerging, but looks yellowy, dried and simply "cracks" in your hand like a dry leaf. What gives? I though it made it, but now looks like crap. Its still pushing up and I tried slightly tugging on it and appears firm.

Im not sure if I should have, but I mixed some water with copper fungicide powder and dropped it in the center.

Did I do this correctly or maybe its something else?

Also, some of the branches leaves are wilted downwards as seen in the the first picture.

Any advice??

Chip most of the time especially with trachys it takes a while to show cold damage just keep it dry it will come back.

It has bud damage. The emerging leaves were damaged and possibly deformed by the cold while they were forming. Here is a picture of my kentia palm. We had a freeze in Jan of 07 that fried the fronds off of it. During the freeze the frond on the left was still a spear (unopened)so it had minimal, if any, damage once it opened. Then the frond on the right followed and that one was damaged and significantly smaller because it was damaged while it was being formed. Now the third frond in the middle looks like it is going to be a large, healthy frond without any damage from that freeze.

She might have some kind of worm. My ducks get like that sometimes. Maybe a wormer would help. Do you notice any blood in her droppings? Could be coccidiosos.. Its that time of year. Corid in her drinking water would be the best for that. Maybe give her some orally to jump start it. Or I use a antibiotic when its not a worm issue. Its called Tylan 50. Its a injectable but I use it orally. On my peacocks I use 1/2 cc down the throat 1 time a day for 3 days. You can get both at Tractor Supply or Fleet Farm or any farm type store. Good Luck!

Since you have to do something now and they are covering the entrance, you could just prune back on each side so that there is plenty of room for access up and down the steps. Then, in late winter when the ground is workable, dig them up, getting as big a rootball as possible and re-plant them at least 6 ft away from the steps. If the bush is too big and awkward to work with, cut it down about half way and then dig it up and re-plant. Water it in its new spot--slowly and deeply (flood it actually, unless the ground is rather moist already). Perhaps water it in several times in a row--and do it several times during the next week (unless it rains). Several weeks later in early spring, if you want, you can do some selective pruning--prune out any parts that are black or brown (dead)-- and perhaps shape it a bit if your fall pruning left it a bit lop-sided, but just accept that you can't do a lot shape-wise at that point. Do not panic if it is slow to get started in the spring. It will have to grow some new roots and take time to settle in. By the way, what gardening zone are you in (or what region or state)? It is sometimes easier to give specific instructions if we know. I am in Zone 6 (Kansas) and my advice is based on what I would do here in my zone. So here is the informal report from the GeoTech Eng. and we now have to run cost estimates to see which are even feasible. Developer is saying we can't switch lots either. I don't want to be impatient, but it could be August is we wait for the watertable to recede. We are think Option #4 is we can afford it. Builder is running costs. Based on my visit to the site ant test pits performed this lot has a groundwater problem along with soft alluvial soils on the back 2/3 of the building area. The back line of the house was located along a drainage way for the subdivision and the water is flowing in from the west on top and below the surface through this area. The soft soils on the rear portion of the lot in the building area need to be removed and replaced if the house is to be built on this lot and the drainage will need to be permanently directed around the back of the lot away from the house. To deal with the soil and groundwater conditions, OMI has comprised the following approaches to proceeding with construction: If wanted done Immediately- Undercut the soft soil and place 1-ft of opengraded stone in the wet areas. Then place a filter fabric over the stone and put in compacted fill up to subgrade elevation for the house pad. The footing will be normal construction bearing in the fill. If can wait for a window of opportunity- Undercut the soft soil. Let the lot drain naturally until the lot starts to dry out to the point the water is outside the building area. Place fill up to the subgrade elevation for the house pad. The footing will be normal construction bearing in the fill. Wait until the driest season of the year and allow the water table to subside. Undercut 2-ft and compact the surface soils before placing 3 to 4-ft of soil over the back of the building area. The footing will be normal construction bearing in the fill. This approach may not work if the groundwater has no outlet. Alternate Immediate approach-Place fill on the lot as needed to provide the proper elevation for building area and proper surface drainage. Dig the footings down to firm residual soil and pour flowable fill up to planned bottom of footing depth. Normal foundation bearing on the flowable fill in the back and stiff residual soil on the front. Select a new lot that does not have a drainage area running through the building area

It is really hard to decide; my rule of thumb has always been, which will require the least out of my pocket in the long run? Without doing all kinds of calculations (that I can't do, but I believe that there are websites that can calculate it for you) I can't say for sure. There are advantages to the fixed rate refi, especially lowering the interest rate on your original balance; but could you get a lower rate and less out of pocket from a HELOC, paying it off first with the same discipline that you have been using? Have you talked to a credit union? I did take out a HELOC from my local credit union in order to pay off my mom's condo loan; there were no closing costs, fees, etc and the lowest interest rate in town. That was before the crash -- and it was long ago paid off, so I don't know if such a good deal might still be available. Don't know what repairs you need, but some large companies (hvac, roofing, siding) will offer low cost financing too -- you have to read the contract very carefully to be sure that you are getting what was promised.

I would agree to some extent about keeping it dry but if your weather has warmed up now I think its fine to water,I think cali has got the right idea and as long as this palm is growing still its in good shape,it is when they show damage and are not growing this time of year that I would be concerned,but it sounds like your palm is growing and thats a good thing!The fungicide will not hurt in right dosage,as far as the leaves "wilting"the warmer temps have caused the same thing with my"larger"trachys,I would not worry about it,it's natural for some trachys.

Hi all,
Thanks for your replies! I feel a little more confident now and makes sense and will cross my fingers.
If I see the branches not pushing up anymore, then I will panic. lol I will follow up in a few weeks to report the outcome.
Also, I have a larger windmill in the back yard that I covered with my sons play house and has open windows. This is the 2nd winter in the ground and faired MUCH better than the previous winter.
I removed the house about 3 weeks ago and like turning on a light switch, its working on its 3rd branch emerging! AMAZING the way this thing is performing!!

Ill post pictures on another thread when time allows of this and my Butias and sago.

I would mix up some copper and pour in the bud just in case. Just mix according to bottle.I have lost more palms from this then cold damage by it self.

He has that covered david,good advice though,I have have never seen a plam die from fungicide in the right measure as you said

I was talking about damage from fungus not copper but copper will kill it if you use to often. But as you said if you use it properly it will be ok.

Yea guys if that spear does not pull and is actually growing,I'd say you(your palm)had a close call!very good news if its growing.Its amazing how long a palm can hold on and not look too much different and then "suddenly"they lay a stinker on ya and its to late.I had a fotunei inside that looked "o.k."and then the leaves closed up,so I thought lets give the spear a tug,and out it came such strange feeling,I cut the trunk right below where the petioles extended dead, cut down to the base dead,it had been dead a long time,even though it just looked alittle sick.

I have a waggie that is in a warm, sheltered spot that is simply NOT growing! I thought it made it through my muld winter with NO damage, but now I am wondering why it is not growing. My big Sabal minor has a large flower spike coming up, and it is opening a spear leaf. The Sabal previously stayed dormant until may or June in the last two years. What gives here. The spear on the waggie seems alive.
