sprouted seeds and multiple plants, do i seperate, with pic

Hey
following some suggestions, when putting my seeds into jiffy pellets i placed 2-3 seeds in each pellet. Now that my plants are sprouted and growing, do i leave the two to three sprouts to grow as is, should i separate them, will one overtake the others?

any suggestions and comments welcome.

Chances are they all will grow out but one will likely dominate. They might fuse stems as they look very close together. I normally plant 3-4 seeds per starter as you do but I use bigger starters and plant them about an inch apart. Then I pick the strongest looking one and snip the others.

If you want to experiment, let a couple grow multiple stems and in the others cull them to one individual plant.

Yours are about the right size now to make the decision which to cull.

thanks for the reply. These are the larger jiffy pellets, and i bought the clear solo punch cups (plastic cups you see in the picture) to move them into next.

I have one t5 fixture that im using that has 2 t5 bulbs, however after all the plants im growing im pretty sure im going to have to purchase another one. hydrofarm has a new fixture out im looking at

As I posted on your other post about this "The only "black sticky crud" I can think of was once a layer of green algae that has died. If that's it it should just lift off in pieces. " T5 put out more light and more heat so they are used somewhat higher above the plants than are T12 and T8. The supposed ideal is 6-8" but that assume ideal conditions - which don't exist in real life so you have to experiment in your growing environment. Personally I find 4" to be good for most things but 3" is better IF you have adequate air circulation around the plants with fans. Too close isn't going to hurt the plants except they dry out more quickly. Too far makes them leggy which you can't really fix so too close is better than too high. No seedlings are "skinny in the beginning". That is caused by lack of light and too hot growing ambience. So your lights are too high or your air temps are too hot or both. 3> Your choice. Some clip, most separate. Easy to do and can be done at any time from the cotyledon stage to first set of true leaves. Only difference is ease of handling. I've read here (FAQs) and other places to fertilize seedlings soon after they sprout. Not sure where you found that in the FAQs. The one on fertilizing talks about fertilizing "after transplanting" only, not after they sprout. Big difference! The standard recommendation is well-diluted feedings every 7-10 days AFTER the plants develop their second set of true leaves. I do want to be organic. I don't like the idea of fertilizers. My tomatoes and eggplants are heirloom. Peppers are new mexico varieties. I don't know if this makes a difference. All plants need the nutrients supplied by fertilizers in some form. Heirloom or hybrid or variety makes no difference. They can't grow without them. So if you want to be organic just use one of the many organic fertilizers available. There are 100's of them. Dave

The beast answer found but I feel I have seen multiple Pics vs multiple links as I have used from Photobucket. Now the question is were those Pics merged into one and posted. They did not appear to be as I can merge in Word and my email. I'll find one of the post in question and ask the person that sent the post. For now I understand!! Once your photo (or photos) is uploaded, you will be given a link to share your pictures with others. Copy that link and paste it in the body of your message. You can have multiple links if you have multiple pictures. If you want to attach a picture here (60K or smaller), first compose your message and then select "preview message". On the next screen you will see a preview of your message and a box that says Image file to upload (optional): Choose the "browse" button to find the picture on your computer (or thumb drive). I nicked my seeds and presoaked them in water over night, and I had one sprought in 3 days.. Another 1 came up yesterday and 2 little pokes are starting today. Out of 4 seeds all have started... I have them in a fish tank, its about 75-80 in there all times.. I cant get them outside till june at the earlest here in canada 5b.. How long do they take to flower does anyone know?? dont know if i should plant them in the ground or in a pot... I plan to bring them in for the winter so i dont loose them. I dont mind digging them back up and cutting them down. If they havent flowered as of yet, i would like them to come in without cutting and maybe flower... This would be much eaiser if it was grown in a pot.. an help would be great as i've never grown these before.. jen

Safyre--sometimes it is better to start a new thread rather than adding onto an old one. As for your question, it really would help to know what plants you're talking about. (As to the OP where how many seeds really depend on the plant). Are you talking transplanting into pots indoors, or into a garden. Since Houzz got rid of zone info, where are you at? I'm in Denver, so starting seeds now would mean I can't transplant out until April/May at the general earliest (my veg garden is just in plans right now for seed starting soon). But I have lots of pots indoors for the winter. All are different--I have some newly sprouted chives that I seeded directly into their pots. But I won't start my basil for another month or so, because it shouldn't go out until end of May due to our night temps here.

After many, many trials and errors I no longer use Jiffy Peat Pots. They are a marketing gimmick and a waste of my hard earned dollars. After soaking in water over night I start all my seeds in a homemade mixture of coconut coir, perlite and mycorrhizal inoculant (for root development). The most important time in any living things life is when it is just born. So the more focus on the seedlings health in early development the better chance of success later on. Yours look a bit 'leggie' and I would suggest replacing if you can. If not then you can separate them and plant them deep, about a half inch till the top of the seedling. That way they will develop a very nice root structure. I would highly recommend a florescent light three inches from the tops of them.
Just curious, what type of tomato's are these?

yeah, some of my sprouts are leggy, i left them to long in the humidity dome. I have had good look with the jiffy pellets so far, I have some rockwool i'm going to use later in the summer with softwood cuttings.

my next journey however is making a 5-1-1 mix for transplanting.

Oh ok that makes sense, I've done that before. Can't say Jiffy's don't work I've just had much better results with my own mix.

Love rockwool in my NFT hydroponic setup, I grow lots of lettuce with it.

Not sure where you live but here in New Jersey Diatomaceous Earth is hard to find for the 5-1-1 mix. The only place that I can find that has it is NAPA Auto Parts.

Is your NFT commercially bought or home/self built?
Yeah, i haven't even started looking for 511 mix ingredients.

I have found the jiffys to be sorta costly, however they are as bad a root plugs / rapid rooters

I have a few jiffy pellets that didn't germinate. Do you save these and mix them into your gardening soil or just throw them out?

I've built many of my own NFT systems very easy to do. I've never bought one.
The key to success with NFT is to add a mycorrhizal inoculant to the water otherwise you will have to deal with root rot.

You could always reuse the Jiffy Peat Pellets that the seed didn't germinate in or just throw them in the garden or compost pile.

What type of tomato's are those?
