help please, trying lavender again!

I love herbs, especially lavender but haven't been able to grow it successfully YET.

I just got two new plants,

Sweet Lavender ht 12-18" full sun fragrant silvery folliage & lavender flower spikes.

(no mention if perennial or annual)

and

Lavendula X Intermedia Perennial. Plant in full sun, grows to 4' tall. Prefers fertile, well drained soil. Valued for it's scented leaves. Great in potpurri, flower arrangements.

That's the info that came with them, all I know since I've never managed to keep one alive so far. I don't have a proper place in full sun in my flower beds so I have to grow them in pots. I really want to be able to grow these, so I'm asking for all the advice I can get. I had understood they didn't like alot of water, or alot of fertilizer. I think I found that out after(maybe)overwatering and fertilizing it but I'm not sure.

Thanks.
