I'm Finally Moving to a house with a Yard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well my Wife and I finally found a nice little house with a yard to rent 20 miles south of where we are right now (another half a zone warmer..lol) - the yard is very small but is south facing - I told my wife I would not accept anything else - finally in May we will be out of are apartment and I will be on my way to creating my northern tropical Paradise...WOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! - it also has a nice cool unfinished basement for storing things dormant and also has central air. I'm super excited and so is the wife.

Very cool 20 miles south and south facing thats got to add a few extra feet in the right direction and just at the perfect time of year!I landed a similar deal although not my house owner agreed to let me chainsaw a massive bush-tree(hew 15ft tallx15ft around)that blocked out all the (south facing)light and about 8 chest high overgrown bushes for my northern palm and succulent garden I planted 2 trachys Nov 1 and they made it through winter!will post pics when everythings in hope you will too!

Congrats nyssaman! I live in a town house that we rent. At least its an end unit and my landlord doesn't mind me planting all the stuff in the ground. I still cant wait to get our own house. What is the name of your town in Ontario? I just want to see where you are on the map.

Nice job. The pictures are so helpful. I could build one now from the pictures. I did one very similar 8 x 8 ft with a single slant on the roof back about 1972. I did the door in the front. cut out for a big window. but otherwise pretty similar ideas. I did it without drawings. I just figured it out as I went along. Trying to make 8 x 8 work out. Unfortunate I did not set it on cinder blocks and it did not last long enough. I also set it up and then put on the walls. I cut the door out of the plywood first then put it up. Just a little different. Oh yes I also used what I think they call textured wood on the sides. they use it for modern houses. it has slots up and down for a finished look. I think it might be called texure 111 siding. I used the narrow width. Here is a link that might be useful:

Yes the brugs are just hanging on. I've quit giving them fertilizer because I knew we'd be moving them and its so darn hot..don't want to put any more stress on them asking that they produce flowers too!! Right now should I just keep 'em alive and maybe start them with a little fertilizer? Then once it cools off (mid Sept) I'll start feeding them heavily. I had one huge flush about May.. it was wonderful but didn't last long -- the heat kicked in. Amy, that is a Mexican Elder Tree. We put it there several years ago when we thought the elm tree by the mail box was going to die.. Well it didn't and the Mexican Elder is just not happy, it needs more sun. We were just there today getting cuttings of everything I want to make babies of.. We'll be going back this evening or early tomorrow to move the trailer and get the very last of what is ours out of the garage. I won't know when until my son calls me to tell me he's ready to do it. :) BTW I found a piece of paper with a phone number and the name Amy... for the life of me I couldn't remember who Amy was!!! But I knew I didn't want to lose that paper either! DUH!!!! My brain is mush.. now where did I put that piece of paper.....mumble mumble

Aww shucks!! Thanks for all the good wishes! Adopted, you have *no* idea. Some of the details I left out were as follows: -The first time I ever walked onto that property (more than 2 years ago), I "felt" as if it were mine. I even called my DH and told him that I thought we should look at this house, because it feels like ours. To my utter shock, he came over and said the same thing. -After talking ourselves out of/back into the house, we go see it again. (This time, I was the realtor.) I get that same feeling again. -We put the offer on it last summer. I tell my DH that I "know this first offer won't go through, but I feel like we're supposed to make it anyway. I know they won't take it, but I feel like we'll come to better terms later." I tell everyone I know the same thing. When the deal didn't work out, I wasn't all that disappointed. -When trying to work out the contract, the sellers tell me that there are 2 other couples that have made offers. I "know" immediately that they won't work out. I tell DH that I normally would be worried, but I'm not, because I just know it's our house. Weird, huh?? And Snookums, I will be posted ad infinitum on the pool forum....the pool area of the new house is a disaster!!! Again, good bones, but needs *so* much work. Wheeee!!!

You're right, golddust, they have done an amazing job. Here are pictures from about 10 days ago. Since then, they have worked like crazy to get the house to where it is now. The floor guy laid and finished hardwood floors for the entire house in 4 days. The only one who dropped the ball was the electrician. All my kids woke up with colds today. Hi Jay,I'm in London Ontario now about 400000 people. The name of the little town I'm moving to is St.Thomas Ontario 40000 people. about 5 miles inland from the north shore of lake Erie. We had to move - we have 2 little kids and our 2 bedroom apartment is busting at the seams. I don't even keep plants at my apartment (2 Clivias) - I keep them at my moms - they are all over the place..lol.

Jeff, no doubt your mum will be able to run freely round her own house without tripping over pots now that your plants will be moving house too! Good luck in your new home.

I understand nyssaman. Along with all of the plants I grow, I also grow 2 boys LOL! Caleb 5 and Jacob 2. Our little girl will be born on May 5th (Cinco de Mayo). Theres no way we could do it in the apartment we started out with.

I actually love Canada. I've been to Toronto for a few days once. I've never felt so safe and clean in a major city before.

Hi Jay, I don't know what town houses run in your neck of the woods but we had to get out of the city because we were looking at 1000 bucks a month + utilities. In the town we are moving to we will pay 800 bucks a month + utilities. There is about 200 bucks difference in living costs between the 2 cities.that means more palms and tropicals in the long run..lol. Actually it means I will be able to afford diapers and wet wipes..LMAO

Here in Chambersburg PA we pay $720 + utilities a month for three bedrooms, 1 and 2 half baths, living room, dining room, kitchen, finished basement with laundry room, storage room, and back patio. Not too shabby. The best part is we live in an end unit with a large wrap around yard. We really got lucky.

Steve that's cool I will have my own house in about 4 yrs
with a huge area for all my tropicals of course !
Many diffrient kinds of palms in the yard ...yep i look forward to that !! Kind of cramped as we are in our mobile home.... congrats !

Jeff - I forgot to respond to the shotgun post. I'm definitely looking forward to going shotgun shopping. I'll also buy a really sharp knife and some rope! LOL! I'm sure I can find something to do with those. Not to mention she'll have two big brothers to help me with the very unlucky guys. Do I sound worried? No I'm not worried!!!!!
